Politicians in Washington have spent the better part of the past two months advancing a myth that is undermining one of the most important public policy debates in recent memory. It’s a myth that is coming at the expense of solutions based on common sense that could return us to balance and fiscal stability. Twenty-six years ago, President Reagan implemented significant tax reforms that lowered the individual income tax rate, limited deductions and brought equality to tax rates across all levels.

It’s always clichéd to say “when historians look back at the year xxxx,” but when they do, 2012 might be seen as the year Stephen Harper’s Conservatives finally began acting more like a typical Canadian government. The Conservative regime appears increasingly mature and more entrenched than ever, while the NDP and Liberals compete for second place. It has never been easy to explain the Harper government, but after years of lurching brinkmanship and some very erratic actions, it’s striking to realize in 2012 how much it is beginning to resemble past governments. Its key issues and policies

Theoretically, this is the last weekend we must endure incessant talk of the now infamous fiscal cliff. And if you need more of it, there will be portions aplenty on Sunday morning´s shows. No, not on "Sexy Abs," "Your Perfect Sleep Number" or "Professional Hair Removal." But pretty much everywhere else. Fox News Sunday features the dynamic duo of Sens. Lindsey Graham and Dianne Feinstein to talk cliff with dollops of gun control and Benghazi scandal to taste.

LONDON — The bond between Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and President Ronald Reagan, both in office in the 1980s, has become a kind of gold standard, showing what the “special relationship” between Britain and the United States can be when their leaders share a political creed. But even though the two shared a belief in the virtues of the free market and the need to face down the Soviet Union over Afghanistan and other cold war issues, the Thatcher-Reagan embrace had its thorny passages — perhaps never more so than during the 1982 Falklands war in the South Atlantic.

If it seemed like retiring EPA Chief Lisa Jackson carried out her job with a religious zeal, you’d be right. Barack Obama’s pick as his first EPA administrator told a 2010 National Council of Churches conference in New Orleans that government and religious leaders must unite in their “moral obligation” to heal the planet and “build on the religious and moral reasons for being good stewards of our environment.” “The question now is, ‘What we can do?’” the green-church devotee concluded, adding that her efforts were blessed by the White House’s Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnership. Her legion of Washington media disciples —

Hi, I’m Senator Roy Blunt from Missouri. As we bring 2012 to a close, leaders in Washington have an opportunity to kick off the New Year by working together to solve some of the big challenges facing our country today. At a time when our federal debt’s topped a record $16 trillion, it’s been more than three years since the Democrat leaders in the Senate have passed a federal budget, and the Senate Majority Leader has refused to bring any appropriations bills to the floor this entire year.

WASHINGTON- As New Year´s Day approached 150 years ago, all eyes were on President Abraham Lincoln in expectation of what he warned 100 days earlier would be coming - his final proclamation declaring all slaves in states rebelling against the Union to be "forever free." A tradition began Dec. 31, 1862, as many black churches held Watch Night services, awaiting word that Lincoln´s Emancipation Proclamation would take effect amid a bloody Civil War. Later, congregations listened as the president´s historic words were read aloud. (Snip) This year, the Watch Night tradition will follow the historic document to its home

I like elephants. I’ve viewed them in the wild in Africa and ridden them inThailand. I’ve also seen them in a circus and a zoo. Forced to choose, I prefer the first two experiences. But most Americans don’t get those opportunities. So it’s circus/zoo or nothing. Twelve years ago the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals filed suit against Feld Entertainment, which produces Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circus, charging animal cruelty. I have no independent information on the truth of the allegations, but ASPCA just put out a curious press release on the suit:

The tide has been turning rather quickly against the gun grabbing gang as the year draws to a close, and they’ve clearly noticed. With nearly three quarters of all Americans opposed to a ban on handguns, and a slim majority even opposing bans on so called “assault rifles,” Second Amendment opponents find themselves in need of more “creative” ways to go after your guns. The latest one being picked up from the reliable liberal arsenal and dusted off is the idea of forcing legal gun owners to purchase liability insurance for their weapons.

Jonathan V. Last penned a paean to the Batman earlier this year in The Weekly Standard, making the case for understanding the Caped Crusader as the hero of the modern liberal order against illiberal threats, including and especially those that emerge from within modernity itself (“A One-Man Department of Justice,” August 13, 2012). Last is right to argue that modernity needs restraining. He is mistaken in thinking that this is a job for Batman. Batman seems rather to incarnate the willful modern project to end suffering by using reason to gain mastery over all things. Batman wages war against disorder

After interviewing food historians, scholars, cooks, doctors, activists and consumers for his new film "Soul Food Junkies," filmmaker Byron Hurt concluded that an addiction to soul food is killing African-Americans at an alarming rate. The movie, which will premiere on January 14 on U.S. public broadcasting television, examines how black cultural identity is linked to high-calorie, high-fat food such as fried chicken and barbecued ribs and how eating habits may be changing.

Hello Everybody. For the past couple months, I’ve been working with people in both parties — with the help of business leaders and ordinary Americans — to come together around a plan to grow the economy and shrink our deficits. It’s a balanced plan that protects the middle class, cuts spending in a responsible way and asks the wealthiest to pay a little more. I’ll keep working with anybody who’s serious about getting a comprehensive plan like this done. [Snip] But we’re now at the point where the law says that every American’s tax rates are going up.

"God made man but Sam Colt made them equal." It is said that the 2nd Amendment follows hard upon the 1st so as to serve as its bodyguard -- providing the added incentive of coercive force by a wary citizenry to guarantee that those initial cherished liberties, expounded by our Founders, did not go the way of the 10th Amendment. The 2nd Amendment, interpreted as the right to bear arms by a free people, has not escaped that yawning chasm that has opened up between the political Right and Left

In the new eco-drama "Promised Land," co-writers and co-stars Matt Damon and John Krasinski take on the hot-button issue of hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," through which chemicals are pumped into the ground to extract natural gas. Damon plays an ace corporate salesman trying to buy up drilling rights in a Pennsylvania farm town, and Krasinski plays an anti-fracking activist. For many critcs, however, the film itself doesn´t dig deep enough to fulfill its potential. The Times´ Kenneth Turan writes that "Promised Land" has "a strong cast and an intriguing premise that has the added bonus of real-world relevance,"

One of the most ridiculous public figures of our age, Sean Penn, should have great utility for conservatives. He exemplifies the incoherence of the Hollywood Left, and doesn´t know when to keep his mouth shut. Even better, he thinks that he can write - that his stream of consciousness, when transcribed, makes sense, and is even persuasive.(snip)The Alynskyite Left has long used the careless words of conservatives they wish to demonize as an effective tool in creating a negative brand identity for their opponents

NEW YORK — The phones at Red´s Trading Post wouldn´t stop ringing. Would-be customers from as far away as New York wanted to know if the Twin Falls, Idaho gun shop had firearms in stock. Others clamored to find out if their orders had been shipped. Overwhelmed, gun store manager Ryan Horsley had to do what no employee would ever think of doing just days before Christmas: He disconnected the phone lines for three whole days. "We had to shut everything off," says Horsley, whose family has owned Red´s Trading Post, the state´s oldest gun shop, since 1936.

The word among some Senate Republicans is that a fiscal cliff deal is likely to be struck by Sunday, or Monday at the latest. (And Monday, being December 31st, is in fact the latest a deal could be struck to avoid January 1 tax increases.) Those Senate Republicans hope the final deal will make permanent current tax levels — Bush tax cut levels — for everyone who makes below $500,000.

His official portrait still refers to Bashar al-Assad as “The Hope” of the Syrian nation, but signs are increasing that the man who presides over Syria’s embattled government has little of it left for himself. Accounts of conditions inside the Syrian regime in recent days have shed new light on the psychological toll of the nearly two-year-old civil war on Assad, depicting the Syrian leader as isolated and fearful as his regime appears to be on the verge of crumbling around him.

“Superstorm” Sandy killed more than 100 people, destroyed thousands of homes and businesses, and left millions without food, water, electricity, sanitation or shelter for days or even weeks. Our thoughts and prayers remain focused on its victims, many of whom are still grieving as they struggle with the storm’s wintry aftermath and try to rebuild their lives. Unfortunately, too many politicians continue to use the storm to advance agendas, deflect blame for incompetence and mistakes, and obfuscate and magnify future risks from building and development projects that they have designed, promoted, permitted and profited from.

More than 3 million Cablevision customers may kick off the new year with a TV diet. Viacom’s 17 cable networks, including MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, could go dark on Cablevision on Jan. 1 because of a dispute over programming fees. Viacom is seeking a fee increase from the Bethpage-based cable operator when their current five-year deal expires on Dec. 31. Reps for both sides declined to comment on the looming showdown, which The Post first reported on its website yesterday.

PARIS — Embattled French President Francois Hollande suffered a fresh setback Saturday when France´s highest court threw out a plan to tax the ultrawealthy at a 75 percent rate, saying it was unfair. In a stinging rebuke to one of Socialist Hollande´s flagship campaign promises, the constitutional council ruled Saturday that the way the highly contentious tax was designed was unconstitutional. It was intended to hit incomes over €1 million ($1.32 million).

As I look back at the 2012 presidential campaign, it now all seems so obvious. Not one of those clowns performing at the hundreds of Republican primary debates this year and last was a match for the eventual nominee, Mitt Romney. And Romney clearly wasn't the candidate to defeat President Barack Obama.Yes and yes - but still. We don't always see what's happening before our very eyes. To me, the last 12 months (give or take a few) raise two central questions: If we don't learn from the flawed candidates of the past, how will we avoid taking them seriously in the future? A Washington attorney says that Environmental Protection Agency Chief Administrator Lisa Jackson’s resignation and investigations into the EPA’s use of secret email accounts are not coincidental. “Life’s full of coincidences, but this is too many,” Competitive Enterprise Institute Senior Fellow Chris Horner told FoxNews.com. “She had no choice.” The Justice Department also plans to release emails Jan. 14 in which EPA Chief Jackson’s alias account discusses coal regulation. According to Horner, this clearly is a factor behind Jackson’s decision to leave the agency.

At the White House on Friday, President Obama apparently told the “summoned” that he wants Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell to reach a deal on the income threshold for tax hikes along, I assume, with a few other partial “cliff” fixes. If they don’t reach a deal, Obama will have Reid call for a Senate vote on Obama’s plan to increase taxes on everyone earning $250,000 or more, plus an extension of expiring unemployment benefits. The idea is to apply pressure on McConnell to reach a deal in order to avoid a vote on Obama’s plan.
