The tide has been turning rather quickly against the gun grabbing gang as the year draws to a close, and they’ve clearly noticed. With nearly three quarters of all Americans opposed to a ban on handguns, and a slim majority even opposing bans on so called “assault rifles,” Second Amendment opponents find themselves in need of more “creative” ways to go after your guns. The latest one being picked up from the reliable liberal arsenal and dusted off is the idea of forcing legal gun owners to purchase liability insurance for their weapons.

Jonathan V. Last penned a paean to the Batman earlier this year in The Weekly Standard, making the case for understanding the Caped Crusader as the hero of the modern liberal order against illiberal threats, including and especially those that emerge from within modernity itself (“A One-Man Department of Justice,” August 13, 2012). Last is right to argue that modernity needs restraining. He is mistaken in thinking that this is a job for Batman. Batman seems rather to incarnate the willful modern project to end suffering by using reason to gain mastery over all things. Batman wages war against disorder

After interviewing food historians, scholars, cooks, doctors, activists and consumers for his new film "Soul Food Junkies," filmmaker Byron Hurt concluded that an addiction to soul food is killing African-Americans at an alarming rate. The movie, which will premiere on January 14 on U.S. public broadcasting television, examines how black cultural identity is linked to high-calorie, high-fat food such as fried chicken and barbecued ribs and how eating habits may be changing.

Hello Everybody. For the past couple months, I’ve been working with people in both parties — with the help of business leaders and ordinary Americans — to come together around a plan to grow the economy and shrink our deficits. It’s a balanced plan that protects the middle class, cuts spending in a responsible way and asks the wealthiest to pay a little more. I’ll keep working with anybody who’s serious about getting a comprehensive plan like this done. [Snip] But we’re now at the point where the law says that every American’s tax rates are going up.

"God made man but Sam Colt made them equal." It is said that the 2nd Amendment follows hard upon the 1st so as to serve as its bodyguard -- providing the added incentive of coercive force by a wary citizenry to guarantee that those initial cherished liberties, expounded by our Founders, did not go the way of the 10th Amendment. The 2nd Amendment, interpreted as the right to bear arms by a free people, has not escaped that yawning chasm that has opened up between the political Right and Left

In the new eco-drama "Promised Land," co-writers and co-stars Matt Damon and John Krasinski take on the hot-button issue of hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," through which chemicals are pumped into the ground to extract natural gas. Damon plays an ace corporate salesman trying to buy up drilling rights in a Pennsylvania farm town, and Krasinski plays an anti-fracking activist. For many critcs, however, the film itself doesn´t dig deep enough to fulfill its potential. The Times´ Kenneth Turan writes that "Promised Land" has "a strong cast and an intriguing premise that has the added bonus of real-world relevance,"

One of the most ridiculous public figures of our age, Sean Penn, should have great utility for conservatives. He exemplifies the incoherence of the Hollywood Left, and doesn´t know when to keep his mouth shut. Even better, he thinks that he can write - that his stream of consciousness, when transcribed, makes sense, and is even persuasive.(snip)The Alynskyite Left has long used the careless words of conservatives they wish to demonize as an effective tool in creating a negative brand identity for their opponents

NEW YORK — The phones at Red´s Trading Post wouldn´t stop ringing. Would-be customers from as far away as New York wanted to know if the Twin Falls, Idaho gun shop had firearms in stock. Others clamored to find out if their orders had been shipped. Overwhelmed, gun store manager Ryan Horsley had to do what no employee would ever think of doing just days before Christmas: He disconnected the phone lines for three whole days. "We had to shut everything off," says Horsley, whose family has owned Red´s Trading Post, the state´s oldest gun shop, since 1936.

The word among some Senate Republicans is that a fiscal cliff deal is likely to be struck by Sunday, or Monday at the latest. (And Monday, being December 31st, is in fact the latest a deal could be struck to avoid January 1 tax increases.) Those Senate Republicans hope the final deal will make permanent current tax levels — Bush tax cut levels — for everyone who makes below $500,000.

His official portrait still refers to Bashar al-Assad as “The Hope” of the Syrian nation, but signs are increasing that the man who presides over Syria’s embattled government has little of it left for himself. Accounts of conditions inside the Syrian regime in recent days have shed new light on the psychological toll of the nearly two-year-old civil war on Assad, depicting the Syrian leader as isolated and fearful as his regime appears to be on the verge of crumbling around him.

“Superstorm” Sandy killed more than 100 people, destroyed thousands of homes and businesses, and left millions without food, water, electricity, sanitation or shelter for days or even weeks. Our thoughts and prayers remain focused on its victims, many of whom are still grieving as they struggle with the storm’s wintry aftermath and try to rebuild their lives. Unfortunately, too many politicians continue to use the storm to advance agendas, deflect blame for incompetence and mistakes, and obfuscate and magnify future risks from building and development projects that they have designed, promoted, permitted and profited from.

More than 3 million Cablevision customers may kick off the new year with a TV diet. Viacom’s 17 cable networks, including MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, could go dark on Cablevision on Jan. 1 because of a dispute over programming fees. Viacom is seeking a fee increase from the Bethpage-based cable operator when their current five-year deal expires on Dec. 31. Reps for both sides declined to comment on the looming showdown, which The Post first reported on its website yesterday.

PARIS — Embattled French President Francois Hollande suffered a fresh setback Saturday when France´s highest court threw out a plan to tax the ultrawealthy at a 75 percent rate, saying it was unfair. In a stinging rebuke to one of Socialist Hollande´s flagship campaign promises, the constitutional council ruled Saturday that the way the highly contentious tax was designed was unconstitutional. It was intended to hit incomes over €1 million ($1.32 million).

As I look back at the 2012 presidential campaign, it now all seems so obvious. Not one of those clowns performing at the hundreds of Republican primary debates this year and last was a match for the eventual nominee, Mitt Romney. And Romney clearly wasn't the candidate to defeat President Barack Obama.Yes and yes - but still. We don't always see what's happening before our very eyes. To me, the last 12 months (give or take a few) raise two central questions: If we don't learn from the flawed candidates of the past, how will we avoid taking them seriously in the future? A Washington attorney says that Environmental Protection Agency Chief Administrator Lisa Jackson’s resignation and investigations into the EPA’s use of secret email accounts are not coincidental. “Life’s full of coincidences, but this is too many,” Competitive Enterprise Institute Senior Fellow Chris Horner told FoxNews.com. “She had no choice.” The Justice Department also plans to release emails Jan. 14 in which EPA Chief Jackson’s alias account discusses coal regulation. According to Horner, this clearly is a factor behind Jackson’s decision to leave the agency.

At the White House on Friday, President Obama apparently told the “summoned” that he wants Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell to reach a deal on the income threshold for tax hikes along, I assume, with a few other partial “cliff” fixes. If they don’t reach a deal, Obama will have Reid call for a Senate vote on Obama’s plan to increase taxes on everyone earning $250,000 or more, plus an extension of expiring unemployment benefits. The idea is to apply pressure on McConnell to reach a deal in order to avoid a vote on Obama’s plan.

Among the many cliffs America faces on Jan. 1 is the "dairy cliff." That´s the scenario where Congress fails to pass a farm bill to extend agricultural subsidies, which in turn would cause milk prices to soar. But USDA data shows 2011 milk sales reached their lowest levels since 1984, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel´s Rick Barrett. In September, Barrett wrote that total U.S. beverage milk sales last year were 53 billion pounds - about 6 billion gallons, he reports. Plus, more than half of all adults no longer drink milk at all, data site Informa recently reported.

BUNGO-ONO, Japan—For Yusuke Hashimoto, mayor of this small hamlet in southwestern Japan, desperate times call for desperate measures. The town is one of the country´s top producers of shiitake mushrooms, but they are also popular with local deer. And that´s the rub. "Deer are encroaching on farmers´ ability to make a living," said Mr. Hashimoto, who has become part of a growing movement to reinstate four-legged carnivores to control the herd. Japan´s last native canine—the extinct Canis lupus hodophilax—was killed off in 1905 as national policy. Bringing out a stack of books about wolf folklore, Mr. Hashimoto explained reintroducing wolves

How´s this for cultural amnesia: Politico´s Jonathan Allen wrote this morning of fiscal cliff negotiations: "If they go over the cliff, they´ll do it together. But it won´t be some happy Thelma-and-Louise-style climax." Happy? Has anyone actually watched Thelma & Louise lately? The 1991 movie is about two women who go on the lam after one saves the other from an attempted rape by shooting the attacker. Convinced the police won´t believe them, they set out to drive to Mexico. But they don´t make it, and the film ends with the two driving off the edge of a cliff

Most Americans have never heard of the Risk Management Agency, but the obscure U.S. Agriculture Department office spreads good cheer and millions of dollars in grants each year to industry trade groups and universities in the name of promoting economic stability in the farming industry by reducing risk. Along the way, such well-oiled players as the $1 billion-a-year Christmas tree industry or the grape farmers who supply California’s booming winemakers have cashed in on the largesse. Even the lobby for prune growers got in on the action, scoring funds to teach its members how to better negotiate marketing contracts, records show.

The Bronx woman the feds accused of running a ghoulish online scam to profit off the Newtown school massacre also set up at least four charities to solicit donations after Hurricane Sandy. Nouel Alba, 37, was also accused online of impersonating a relative of a second Newtown victim. There was no sign of her on Friday as federal agents raided her home, removing two boxes of possible paper evidence and three smaller packages. The search came a day after she was busted for posing as the aunt of Noah Pozner, a 6-year-old

President Barack Obama issued an executive order to end the pay freeze on federal employees, in effect giving some federal workers a raise. One federal worker now to receive a pay increase is Vice President Joe Biden. According to disclosure forms, Biden made a cool $225,521 last year. After the pay increase, he´ll now make $231,900 per year. Members of Congress, from the House and Senate, also will receive a little bump, as their annual salary will go from $174,000 to 174,900. Leadership in Congress, including the speaker of the House, will likewise get an increase. Here´s the list of new wages,

Remember your high school civics, when your teacher explained the process for passing federal legislation in Washington? First the Speaker of the House goes to ask permission to pass proposed legislation from the Emperor in the White House. If the Speaker does not get the Emperor’s approval before trying to pass a bill, then he is just wasting everyone’s time. Further, if the Senate does not agree with what the House has passed, the Senate Majority Leader can just say the magic incantation, “Dead on Arrival,” and the Speaker of the House skips town. Wait — that’s not what the Constitution says.

One of my New Year’s resolutions is to work harder to persuade ideological friends and foes alike that the way to reduce partisanship and maximize happiness in America is to embrace federalism — the view that we should push as many decisions as possible to the lowest local level feasible. (Snip)For instance, consider the case of Ernest Hemingway’s six-toed cats. According to legend, the writer was given a polydactyl (six-toed) feline named Snowball. Under a deadline, I could not determine whether Snowball was in fact male or female, but assuming he was a he, Snowball managed to overcome the limitations
