John Kass, columnist for The Chicago Tribune, appeared on CNN on Friday where he discussed the tragic increase of violence and murder that has struck his city in recent years. He said that lawmakers and members of the press have been guilty of “papering over” how bad the situation in Chicago was getting, and of “ghettoizing” the minority children who become the victims of gun violence in the inner city. Kass concluded by challenging President Barack Obama to come to Chicago for the funeral of one of the “hundreds and hundreds” of African-American and Latino children killed every year

A 6-year-old girl -- shot and left for dead by the Taliban in Afghanistan earlier this year -- received free reconstructive surgery at a hospital in the U.S. Friday. (Snip) The nonprofit children´s organization, based on Staten Island, helped bring Marizeh to the U.S. after the attack that cost the girl her right eye. Taliban fighters ambushed Marizeh´s family as they drove home in a remote, unidentified region of Afghanistan last spring, said Montanti. Her father tried to hide the girl under his feet inside the family car but she was shot in the face, after watching both her father and brother murdered.

Senate leaders will try to cobble together a legislative package over the weekend to avert nearly $600 billion in automatic tax increases and spending cuts slated to go into effect at midnight on Monday. Following a meeting with House and Senate leaders on Friday afternoon, President Barack Obama said that he is hopeful that Congress can resolve the so-called fiscal cliff over the next 72 hours. [snip] It also would set a framework for deficit reduction in 2013 while suspending $1.2-trillion in domestic spending cuts over the next 10 years.

Talk radio fans should prepare themselves to say goodbye to News Talk 96.9 FM because word from insiders is that WTKK is switching to a music format next week. Our spies inside parent company Greater Media tell us that WTKK will begin broadcasting music — most likely a rhythmic format — a day or so into the New Year. The switch would kill the city’s only FM talk station, leaving WRKO-AM the only major talker left in the market. WTKK, on the air since 1999, featured on-air yakkers including Don Imus, Michael Graham, Jay Severin, Herald columnist Margery Eagan and

Here´s Why Someone

Guns: The left keeps asking why anyone needs an "assault" rifle. Here´s one reason — in 2010, a Texas teen used a rifle similar to the one used in Newtown to defend his younger sister and himself from home invaders. The left quite often exposes its raging elitism through its odious habit of asking why anyone would need the things that it doesn´t like, from guns to big homes to monster trucks. The implication is that if the elitists don´t want whatever it is, then no one should be allowed to have it — except, of course,

The fiscal-cliff melodrama has become one of those bad cable reality shows, a sort of "Real Housewives of New Jersey" without the sincerity though not without the plastic surgery. In the latest episode on Friday, the actors met at the White House in a last-ditch attempt to avert the cliff they had created, and that they all claim would be a catastrophe to jump off, but that they hope they can blame on each other if they do. On second thought, this script would be laughed right off cable.

Leadership: The hero of Desert Storm gave America a taste of victory after the wasted sacrifice of Vietnam and demonstrated that only the sometimes-unwise decisions of politicians can keep us from victory over our enemies. Schwarzkopf, called "Stormin´ Norman" because of his reportedly explosive temper, led America to two sorely needed military victories: a small one in Grenada in 1983 and a big one as de facto commander of allied forces in the Gulf War in 1991. Grenada was the first step in a recovery from the legacy of Vietnam, where defeat was snatched from the

Newtown Killer Was Not

Contrary to media reports, the Newtown killer was not wearing body armor when he gunned down more than two dozen innocent people, including his own mother. Adam Lanza went into the Sandy Hook Elementary School wearing a utility vest, not a bullet proof vest, state police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said Thursday. “It was a fishing type vest, a jacket with a lot of pockets; it was not a bullet-proof vest,” Vance said. It was the kind of vest you can go to Wal-Mart or Cabela’s to buy any day of the week, for fishing.

I am aware that your job is to represent me, and seeing that you were unaware of my existence up to this point, I would like to inform you of one of the places I would expect you to stand politically. I have some real concerns that came upon me while viewing the Government Accountability Office’s Long Term Fiscal Outlook, January 2011. Why not let taxes rise

Barring a last-minute breakthrough, taxes will go up for every American taxpayer on Jan. 1 — and that’s a development conservatives should welcome. Don’t get me wrong, it would be better not to raise taxes on anyone, pursue pro-growth tax reform and cut the size of government instead. But that’s not what the American people voted to do last month. Americans cast their ballots for big government. Now it’s time to pay for it. Until now, the growth of government under President Obama has not hit the pocketbooks of most Americans. During Obama’s first term, federal spending

Imagine you are working for a company that is going bankrupt, but everyone you work with and your bosses are getting pay raises. Seem absurd? Not if you work for the failing federal government, because President Obama has decreed that Vice President Biden, members of Congress, and most federal workers are getting raises for 2013. As the U.S. government is losing its luster on the bond market and as the fiscal cliff looms, President Obama issued an executive order to give everyone raises. Obama has generously bestowed a $6,379 per year raise on Grampa Joe;

Hours after Chicago police listed the shooting death of a West Side man as the city’s 500th homicide of the year, the department backtracked and said the city has yet to reach the grim milestone. Superintendent Garry McCarthy had told the Tribune Thursday afternoon that the homicide count stood at 499. Hours later, Nathaniel T. Jackson, 40, was gunned down outside a store in the Austin neighborhood and the department confirmed Friday morning that his death was the 500th homicide. Mayor Rahm Emanuel released a statement noting that "Chicago has reached an unfortunate and tragic milestone."

A week ago on NBC´s "Meet The Press," David Gregory brandished on screen a high-capacity magazine. To most media experts, a "high-capacity magazine" means an ad-stuffed double-issue of Vanity Fair with the triple-page perfume-scented pullouts. But apparently in America´s gun-nut gun culture of gun-crazed gun kooks, it´s something else entirely, and it was this latter kind that Mr. Gregory produced in order to taunt Wayne LaPierre of the NRA. As the poster child for America´s gun-crazed gun-kook gun culture, Mr. LaPierre would probably have been more scared by the host waving around a headily perfumed Vanity Fair.

The news media are enthralled with the drama of the wrestling match at the brink of the “fiscal cliff.” However, the taxpayers should keep their eyes on the equally gripping story of the budget shortfalls facing virtually every state. Our governors and state legislators are grappling with insolvent pension systems, ballooning Medicaid expenditures, skyrocketing prison costs and falling tax revenues. Still, there is good news. Rather than being paralyzed by partisan gridlock, state leaders have found bipartisan agreement on an important issue: criminal justice reform. This is a recent development. For years, battles over prison reforms have bitterly divided

The twist in the long military career of Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf is that a 35-year Army soldier is remembered more for what he did in the air than on land. Commanding his first war, the four-star infantryman decided on a strategy to eject Iraqi forces and liberate Kuwait that showcased air power — the precision weapons and strike jets that had been developed (but had gone mostly unused) in the preceding 20 years. When Operation Desert Storm kicked off on the night of Jan. 17, 1991, he watched in a command post in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, —

Hold onto your iPhones! Major crime in New York City inched up this year, and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg on Friday fingered the culprit: too many iPhones and iPads were being swiped. A rise in thefts of shiny Apple products accounted for the slight increase in the city’s annual crime index, a statistic that covers a number of felonies, including murder, grand larceny and robbery, Mr. Bloomberg said on Friday morning during his weekly radio show. As of Monday, the Police Department recorded 3,484 more major crimes in 2012 than for the same period last year. The increase in Apple product

When is the power of positive thinking not sufficient to solve to a pressing problem? They are an icon of the American West and a symbol of the country´s frontier history, but now hundreds of mustang horses face slaughter due to overpopulation. Under existing laws the government pays ranchers to take in thousands of these ´wild´ horses a year in order to keep population numbers down. Mustangs are not an indigenous species to America and are known to have an adverse affect on natural ecosystems. The current system of managing these threats has been in place since 1971 but now rising feed costs has resulted in a growing number of American ranchers refusing

Almost everything about the modern university is a paradox. It has become a sort of industry gone rogue that embraces practices that a Wal-Mart or Halliburton would never get away with. It is exempt from scrutiny in the fashion that the Left ceased talking about renditions or Guantanamo Bay once Barack Obama was elected, or a Code Pink goes after a NRA official in the way it would never disrupt a hearing on Fast and Furious. In other words, the university is one of the great foundations of the Left, and so is immune from the sort of criticism

A New York City woman tried to scam donors by posing as the aunt of a child killed in the Connecticut elementary school massacre, federal authorities said Thursday. Nouel Alba, 37, was arrested Thursday and accused of using her Facebook account, telephone calls and text messages to seek donations for what she called a "funeral fund." She told one donor that she had to enter the scene of the mass shooting in Newtown to identify her nephew, according to the criminal complaint. Alba is charged with lying to FBI agents who were investigating charity scams related to the shooting
