A new Gallup poll shows that the National Rifle Association, the target of a wave of intensely negative news coverage after the Newtown, Connecticut school shootings, still has a favorable rating of 54 percent. While down from the organization’s 60 percent favorable rating in 2005, that is still about a point higher than President Obama’s personal favorable rating. A Huffington Post average of the president’s favorable ratings places it at 52.3 percent. That average includes favorable ratings of 49 percent in a December 16 CBS News poll, 53 percent in a December 9 Wall Street

A madwoman last night pushed a stranger onto subway tracks in Queens, where he was killed by a train, police and witnesses said. It was the second such nightmare in less than a month. The unsuspecting victim was waiting at the elevated 40th Street station of the 7 line in Sunnyside at 8 p.m. “This lady, she just pushed the guy on the tracks. Then she ran away. I was screaming and closing my eyes,” said witness Tenzing Tegeng, 21, one of five people on the platform.

WASHINGTON— Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will return to work next week after a nasty bout with stomach flu and a concussion sidelined her for three weeks.“The Secretary continues to recuperate at home. She had long planned to take this holiday week off, so she had no work schedule,” her spokesman, Deputy Assistant Secretary Philippe Reines said in a statement. “She looks forward to getting back to the office next week and resuming her schedule.” Clinton spent the holidays with her family after working from home for the past week. Clinton’s doctors, in a statement released last weekend,

Multiple housing-code violations were discovered more than two years ago in a Hackensack house owned by politically connected lawyers, but the city never issued any summonses or demanded that the deficiencies be corrected. Instead, the violations only came to light this month when a fire damaged a neighboring house also owned by the lawyers. Hackensack zoning board attorney Richard Malagiere, lawyer Carmine Alampi and Anthony Errico — the owners — were not cited for any violations at 236 Johnson Ave. since they purchased the property in 2008, even though previous owners had been issued such citations several times. On Dec. 10,

“What we must have is a national debate about guns.” So goes the media cliche of the moment. Everybody on the left is saying it, but nobody there means a word of it. All these wayward worthies really want is an opportunity to put piety on parade (and take your guns). Everybody agrees that there’s too much violence in the culture. There’s even wide agreement on three major instruments of the violence — guns, the mentally ill, and the entertainment media. Gun owners, usually defined by liberals as “gun nuts,”

LOS ANGELES— FBI files on Marilyn Monroe that could not be located earlier this year have been found and re-issued, revealing the names of some of the movie star´s acquaintances who drew concern from government officials and her own entourage. The files had previously been heavily redacted, but more details are now public in a version of the file recently obtained by The Associated Press through the Freedom of Information Act. The updated files reveal that some in Monroe's inner circle were concerned about her association with Frederick Vanderbilt Field, who was disinherited from his wealthy family over his leftist views. A Chinese prisoner´s note, found in a box of Kmart Halloween decorations by an unsuspecting Oregonian, described the horrors of China´s prison-factories. Despite that sort of thing not supposed to be happening, it is happening because China remains a communist tyranny. Why is this happening? In part, because the U.S. under Obama has been silent. Maybe that´s because the U.S. relies on China to finance its vast U.S. government spending through its purchase of $1.16 trillion in U.S. Treasury

There is something particularly ugly in a democratic society when government officials lie — or in the case in point, tell half-truths. Last week in the wake of a damning report on how some State Department officials handled the security situation at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi prior to and after Sept. 11, it was announced that four officials had resigned. Well, at least that’s what most of us thought they had announced. This is the way State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland put it: that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton “has accepted Eric Boswell’s decision to resign

IF nothing else, the debate over the “fiscal cliff” has dramatically illustrated the true cost of President Barack Obama´s fiscal policies. If the president and Congress don´t reach an agreement, roughly $671 billion in tax increases and spending cuts would take effect — yet the nation would still continue to run a deficit nearly twice the size of the pre-recession 2007 deficit.(Snip)Falling over the fiscal cliff also could result in nearly 30 million additional filers being hit by the alternative minimum tax, including some earning as little as $33,750, according to the IRS.

Retired General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, who commanded the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein´s forces out of Kuwait in 1991, has died. The 78-year-old succumbed to complications from pneumonia on Thursday in Tampa, Florida, where he lived in retirement. His large personality and public prominence during the nation´s first live-broadcast war made him the the most recognizable, and acclaimed, military commander since Dwight Eisenhower and Douglas MacArthur. A much-decorated combat soldier in Vietnam, Schwarzkopf was known popularly as ´Stormin´ Norman´ for his notoriously explosive temper.

The State Department’s Accountability Review Board last week issued a devastating report on the events leading up to the Sept. 11 assassination of four Americans at our Benghazi consulate. Unfortunately, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has still not faced questioning by Congress or the media more than three months after the tragedy. A series of excuses has conveniently allowed her to escape cross examination until after the ARB report was released. Clinton sails right along, now preparing the first steps for what is widely expected to be her 2016 presidential campaign. Last week, however, Sen. Bob Corker asserted

Among the secret records is one from 1956 in which the FBI documents an anonymous call to the New York Daily News claiming playwright Arthur Miller was a communist and Monroe had ´drifted into the Communist orbit´. The files had previously been heavily redacted, but more details are now public in a version of the file recently obtained

Promises: Social Security ran a $47.8 billion deficit in fiscal 2012, drawing in even less than it paid out last year, with just 1.67 workers supporting each retiree. But instead of confronting the truth, the left still denies reality. According to official Social Security Administration data this week, the program´s incoming cash from the working population and their employers came to $725 billion in fiscal 2012 while it paid out $773 billion in cash and overhead. That´s as the number of retirees and disabled using the system grow 10,000 a day to more than 57 million people currently,

President Obama will meet with Congressional leaders Friday afternoon at the White House just days before the so-called fiscal cliff deadline, when taxes are slated to increase. Obama will host Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), according to a White House official. (Snip) The sitdown at the White House also comes as GOP leaders announced on Thursday that the House will come back into session on Sunday, just hours before the deadline.

President Obama summoned congressional leaders to a Friday summit at the White House in a last-ditch effort to protect taxpayers, unemployed workers and the fragile U.S. recovery from severe austerity measures set to hit in just four days. Also Thursday, House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) announced that he would call the House back into session this weekend. And in perhaps the most significant development, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for the first time was engaged directly in talks with the White House. He signaled an interest in cutting a deal.

John F. Kerry because

A dog whistle makes a sound or sends a command that only a canine can hear. A rhetorical dog whistle is a coded message for select listeners, usually the politically correct. Euphemism is the breath that blows rhetorical dog whistles. A few examples suffice to make the point. "Affirmative action" usually means racial or gender quotas. "Revenue" usually means taxes. Calling "addiction" sickness is a dog whistle that allows drunks and addicts to think they are ill, not irresponsible. Glaucoma treatment has become a dog whistle for legalizing pot.

Washington’s Democratic and Republican power brokers have sent the message to the nation that going over the fiscal cliff is a worst-case scenario. But they’re not acting that way, not at all. Instead, many of them have calculated that it’s better to go over the cliff — at least temporarily — than swallow a raw deal. For many Republicans, a cliff dive means blaming President Barack Obama for a big tax hike in the short term and then voting to cut taxes for most Americans next month.

I carried a gun in New York City for more than a decade -- back when there were thousands of murders a year and the Bronx led the nation in killings. On at least four occasions, that gun saved my life, and in a couple of instances, the lives of people who were with me at the time. For 13 years I had a New York City full carry permit. For a number of years I concealed and carried a gun in my son´s grammar school as well.

WASHINGTON – Truth is, retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf didn´t care much for his popular "Stormin´ Norman" nickname. The seemingly no-nonsense Desert Storm commander´s reputed temper with aides and subordinates supposedly earned him that rough-and-ready moniker. But others around the general, who died Thursday in Tampa, Fla., at age 78 from complications from pneumonia, knew him as a friendly, talkative and even jovial figure who preferred the somewhat milder sobriquet given by his troops: "The Bear."

Washington--A last-gasp effort Thursday to avoid automatic tax increases and spending cuts got off on the same convulsive, partisan tone that marked congressional attempts to resolve the impasse before lawmakers left Washington to go home for Christmas. (Snip)Reid charged Thursday that the House was “being operated with a dictatorship of the speaker. John Boehner seems to care more about keeping his speakership than about keeping the nation on sound financial footing,” the Nevada Democrat said on the Senate floor.

In 1980 Secretary of State Cyrus Vance had resigned due to his opposition to the proposed "Eagle Claw" military mission to rescue the U.S. hostages being held in Iran. Operation Eagle Claw (The first ever use of the U.S. Delta Force) proved to be a complete failure and claimed the lives of six servicemen. U.S. prestige in the world was at an all time low due to the hostage crisis and the USSR flexing its muscles in Afghanistan.

The 1982 invasion of the Falkland Islands by Argentina caught PM Margaret Thatcher by surprise, newly released government papers have shown. The then-prime minister only saw it was likely after getting “raw intelligence” two days before the Argentines landed. Papers released under the 30-year rule show Mrs Thatcher were acutely worried about retaking the Islands. One historian said the documents were among the “most powerful material” declassified in the last three decades. In October 1982, a few months after the war ended, Mrs Thatcher gave evidence behind closed doors to the Falkland Islands Review

Prices for buying helium to fill balloons and rental tanks at her Balloons Fantastique in Fort Worth have dramatically increased in the past year, because of a worldwide shortage of the lighter-than-air gas.(Snip) Texas is home to the country´s only Federal Helium Reserve, a site outside Amarillo where more than one-third of the world´s helium supply is produced, and the federal government has worked for years to deplete that supply.
