Leadership: A less-than-adequate independent review cites "grossly" inadequate leadership, "systemic failures" and "management deficiencies" that mean our secretary of state isn´t ready for that 3 a.m. call either. We know Hillary Clinton had a virus that caused her to faint and suffer a concussion from her fall and needs her rest. We also know she wasn´t up to it when U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice took her place and went on five Sunday talk shows to blame a video for the terrorist attack on our consulate in Benghazi. But then, Susan Rice isn´t running for president in 2016,
A new poll released today by Gallup shows that Americans favor increased security and proactive mental health treatment over gun control. The national poll of a little over 1,000 adults was conducted in the wake of the tragic murders at a Connecticuit school last Friday. As the introduction to the poll says: Americans are most likely to say that an increased police presence at schools, increased government spending on mental health screening and treatment, and decreased depiction of gun violence in entertainment venues would be effective
A Nashville father is taking the safety of his children´s elementary school into his own hands by standing watch outside the building in his camouflage Marines uniform. "I feel like this is something I had to do," Staff Sgt. Jordan Pritchard told local WSMV television while standing outside Gower Elementary school on Tuesday. Pritchard, who has two children at the school, is not armed. But he said he believed the sight of a soldier standing sentinel would make a gunman think twice about attacking the school.
Russia is enduring its harshest winter in over 70 years, with temperatures plunging as low as -50 degrees Celsius. Dozens of people have already died, and almost 150 have been hospitalized. The country has not witnessed such a long cold spell since 1938, meteorologists said, with temperatures 10 to 15 degrees lower than the seasonal norm all over Russia. Across the country, 45 people have died due to the cold, and 266 have been taken to hospitals. In total, 542 people were injured due to the freezing temperatures,
The ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform filed an amicus brief Wednesday in the contempt lawsuit brought by House Republicans against Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. in the botched Fast and Furious gunrunning investigation, saying the lawsuit should be dismissed. Rep. Elijah E. Cummings of Maryland claims the court should exercise its discretion and dismiss the lawsuit because the committee failed in its constitutional obligation to avoid unnecessary conflict, to take reasonable measures to accommodate the legitimate interests of the executive branch and to seek information from other available sources.
The Sandy Hook gunman worshiped the devil and had an online page dedicated to Satan, a former classmate revealed, as his childhood barber recalls Adam Lanza never spoke and would stare at the floor every time he had his hair cut. Lanza´s worshiping page had the word ´Devil´ written in red, Gothic-style letters against a black background, Trevor L. Todd told The National Enquirer, something which he said was ´weird´ and ´gave him the chills´. The FBI are trying to piece together his smashed up hard drive to see if his online footprint will reveal
Washington — The Obama administration said Wednesday it will sell 200 million shares — or 40 percent of its remaining stake in General Motors Co. — back to the automaker and announced plans to completely exit the Detroit automaker by March 2014. The Detroit automaker said it will purchase 200 million shares of GM stock held by Treasury for $5.5 billion — or $27.50 per share — nearly $2 above the stock´s closing price on Tuesday. GM shares jumped sharply on the news and were up 7.5 percent to $27.36, or $1.90, early afternoon in very heavy trading.
An American soldier will face a court martial where he could be given the death penalty if found guilty of murdering 16 Afghan civilians in a nighttime rampage earlier this year, the Army announced today. The charges stem from a horrific event in March when Staff Sgt. Robert Bales is alleged to have snuck out of his remote outpost in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar to go on a shooting spree in two nearby villages. The pre-dawn attack left 16 villagers dead and six injured. Nine of those killed were children. In a preliminary hearing,
WENTZVILLE • A barber shop patron who fired three times at another customer discussing the Connecticut school shooting has been charged with three felonies. Lester Davis, 57, of the 400 block of Highland Meadows Place is facing charges of first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a weapon. (Snip) According to court records, Davis is a felon, convicted of second-degree homicide and unlawful possession of a weapon in Middlesex County, N.J., in 1975. Records further state he has been involved in numerous verbal altercations with neighbors, resulting in an order of protection being issued against him.
Even as Americans have become more and more opposed to new gun control measures in recent years, the actual number of households owning guns has declined. (Snip) But then something happened in 2011. Gun ownership spiked to its highest level since 1994 — 47 percent. The people who suddenly had more guns? Not the white males, the Southerners, and the Republicans most associated with guns. Instead they were mostly Democrats….… women …… and people in every region but the South.
RUSH: Hey, guess what, folks? Obama is TIME Magazine´s Person of the Year. What a shock. What an absolute shock. And wait ´til you hear why TIME Magazine chose him. It is a vindication of me, your host, El Squisho, El Rushbo here at the EIB Network and the Limbaugh Institute. TIME Magazine actually goes out and they say Obama is president because people that don´t know anything voted for him in greater numbers than anybody else. And that is a testament to his strength, to be able to convince
On Wednesday’s broadcast of “Andrea Mitchell Reports” on MSNBC, Georgia Democratic Rep. John Lewis invoked the civil rights movement to rally support for increased gun control legislation. “Well, now is the time to act,” Lewis said. “It’s not a time for a commission, or more studies. It is time for action. It reminded me of another period, 1968, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. Robert Kennedy was assassinated. We can go back to 1963, when Medgar Evers was assassinated. We don’t need more weapons of mass destruction. Nothing saddened me more than last Friday.
SPOKANE, Wash. — Will the Marlboro Man light up a joint soon? The states of Washington and Colorado legalized possession of small amounts of marijuana in the November elections, but it is unclear if any cigarette makers plan to supply either market. Marijuana remains illegal under federal law. President Barack Obama indicated last week that going after individual users won´t be a priority, but there´s no firm indication yet what action the Justice Department might take against states or businesses that participate in the nascent pot market, which has the potential to be large.
Canada´s announcement earlier this month that it was considering aircraft other than the F-35 for renewing its fleet seems to have prompted a string of reassuring moves by the U.S. Within days the Pentagon said it would sign a contract with Lockheed Martin for a fifth batch of 32 jets worth $3.8 billion. (Snip) On the heels of the new contract came word Monday that pilots would begin training to fly the F-35 at Eglin, AFB starting January 2013. And that news came just before Leon Panetta himself announced Tuesday night that the freshly trained pilots
House Speaker John Boehner declared Wednesday that his chamber will approve a so-called "Plan B" to avert a crush of tax hikes just 13 days away, despite President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid vowing to oppose it. The move came as talks between Boehner and Obama suddenly hit a standstill. Boehner´s decision on Tuesday to put forward the "Plan B" -- which would raise taxes only on those making over $1 million, and preserve current rates for everyone else -- angered the White House. On Wednesday morning, the White House issued a formal veto threat, as the
Seven-year-old Daniel Barden had one hope for when he grew up: To be a firefighter like his uncles. But while the youngster´s future was tragically cut short when he became one of Adam Lanza´s 26 victims in the Sandy Hook massacre on Friday, his dreams have not been forgotten. In a heart-wrenching display of kindness and remembrance on Wednesday morning, firefighters from as far as New York City attended the young boy´s funeral in Newtown to pay their respects.
During this 150th anniversary year of the composer´s birth—or any year, for that matter—there are plenty of performances of Claude Debussy´s music. Certainly, someone at this moment is attempting to play the celebrated Clair de Lune. And although Debussy (1862-1918) lived less than two decades into the 20th century, his influence has been paramount to the musical art of that century—more so, even, than that of Igor Stravinsky or Arnold Schoenberg. In 1971 Stravinsky, just months before his own death, stated that "Debussy is in all senses the century´s first musician." Virgil Thomson, critic and composer, wrote, "Internationally viewed,
It´s almost as if many in the mainstream press wish we could switch temporarily to a monarchy. That way we could coronate Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and assure her role as our next leader and be done with it. Just weeks after the 2012 election, many in the chattering class already have her down as president-in-waiting. Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich says it would be "virtually impossible" for her to lose the Democratic nomination in 2016 should she run, and Republicans would be "incapable" of competing against her in the general election. Headline resplit by staff.
WGMD Radio out of Delaware: Former ABC News political reporter Sam Donaldson was pulled over on Savannah Road by Lewes Police on December 1 for a traffic violation. An officer says that he’d been drinking. Donaldson failed field sobriety tests, and was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Sam Donaldson is a regular guest on ABC News´ "This Week" and made himself famous as a left-wing reporter disguised as an objective reporter who regularly taunted President Reagan throughout the 1980s.
Having participated as a Time Magazine editor in my share of Person of the Year selections (I edited the David Ho cover and wrote at least one Steve Jobs "also ran" item), I knew how hard it was going to be for the magazine not to make Barack Obama -- winner of the Presidential election that dominated the news for most of the year -- Time´s 2012 POY. (Snip) But I didn´t expect Tim Cook -- a bland fellow largely unknown outside the circle of Apple (AAPL) watchers -- to make it into the magazine as one of four runners up.
This is President Obama as we have never seen him before - caught unawares as he walks out of the Oval Office by none other than Spider-Man - or at least a very mini version of Spider-Man. The intimate photograph taken by White House photographer Pete Souza shows the President joking around with one of this staffer´s children, who - dressed up as the super hero - pretends to shoot a spider web at Obama - who in turn reacts by pretending he is caught up in the imaginary trap. It is just one of the many behind-the-scenes pictures
As Andy says, Robert H Bork was part of the National Review circle, a longtime fixture on NR cruises and at other events. I will leave it to Andy, Ed Whelan, and others to discuss his merits as a jurist, but one reason he would have made a great Supreme Court justice is that he had terrific comic timing. If you were on a panel with him, he was lethally economical: He gave the shortest answers and got the biggest laughs. Off-stage, he was even more convivial. Away from formal portraits, he had a rogue-ish expression,
Personal income grew faster in Texas than the national average during the third quarter, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis reported Wednesday. The state´s total personal income grew 0.8 percent from the second to the third quarter compared to 0.5 percent nationally. Personal income is the sum of all income sources including wages, property and transfer payments such as Social Security, food stamps and unemployment benefits. Texas´ income growth rate was seventh in the nation during the third quarter, according to the bureau. North Dakota´s was highest at 1.4 percent, while neighboring South Dakota´s dropped by 1.6 percent,
A 32-year-old Iranian who is a U.S. citizen and a Christian convert has been imprisoned without notice of any formal charges while visiting his family in Iran, according to his wife and attorneys in the U.S., who are now hoping that a media campaign will help set him free. The Rev. Saeed Abedini, who lives in the U.S. with his wife and two young children, was making one of his frequent visits to see his parents and the rest of his family in Iran,
TAPPER: It seems to a lot of observers that you made the political calculation in 2008, in your first term and in 2012 not to talk about gun violence. You had your position on renewing the ban on semiautomatic rifles that then Senator Biden put into place, but you didn’t do much about it. This is not the first issue — the first incident of horrific gun violence of your four years. Where have you been? PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, here’s where I’ve been, Jake. I’ve been president of the United States, dealing with the worst economic crisis
