White House buckling

An appeals court reinstated lawsuits from Wheaton College and Belmont Abbey College against the HHS contraception mandate, overruling district courts that had ruled the lawsuits as “premature.” The recognition of the DC Circuit of the immediate threat to religious liberty would have been a big, albeit temporary victory for The Becket Fund, which represents the plaintiffs in these cases. However, as TBF explained in its press release and may have been overlooked otherwise, the court forced the Obama administration into conceding that the HHS mandate will be substantially reworked in the near future, emphases mine:

Boehner’s Gambit

On Tuesday, Speaker John Boehner unveiled “Plan B,” his latest fiscal-cliff proposal, but few lawmakers expect the plan to be signed into law. Instead, the move is seen as part of Boehner’s larger strategy as he negotiates a final agreement with President Barack Obama. In short, Boehner wants the president to raise his threshold for tax-rate increases. At the moment, Obama has offered to make the threshold $400,000 — tax rates would be kept the same if you make less than $400,000, but increased if your income is above that mark. Boehner thinks that number is far too low.

Lost amid the shock and horror of Friday´s news was a remarkable op-ed in the Wall Street Journal by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who should no longer be called a "rising star" of the GOP. He commands attention by virtue of being smart, good at his job, and not a white guy. So it´s significant that he chose to use his platform to break ranks with many social conservatives in his party by calling for over-the-counter sales of birth control pills. Of course, Jindal did so by couching his argument

During a press conference in the White House on Wednesday to announce a commission which will recommend measures to be taken to avoid future massacres like what happened in Newtown, President Barack Obama was cornered by ABC News’ Chief White House Correspondent Jake Tapper regarding his newfound sense of urgency in addressing gun violence. “Where’ve you been,” Tapper asked. “I’ve been President of the United States,” Obama replied. “It seems to a lot of observers that you made the political calculation in 2008, in your first term, and in 2012 not to talk about gun violence,” Tapper said.

A Libyan reluctance to crack down on suspected Islamist groups behind the deadly attack on the U.S. Benghazi mission highlights the failure of police and courts to stamp their authority and may open the way for militants to strengthen their grip. (Snip) In a country where armed militias wield the real power on the ground, some say it is too difficult for the weak state armed forces to move against these groups and there is no real desire to dig too deep for fear of setting off reprisals. Robert H. Bork, whose failed Supreme Court nomination in 1987 infuriated conservatives and politicized the confirmation process for the ensuing decades, died Wednesday at the age of 85. The former Yale law professor and judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit had a history of heart problems and had been in poor health for some time. But Bork was a towering figure for an early generation of conservatives. In the 1960s and ´70s, he argued that a liberal-dominated Supreme Court was abusing its power and remaking American life by ending prayers in public schools,

Under the cover of the Newtown school shooting, an “independent” five member investigative panel quietly released an unclassified, 39-page report Tuesday night, detailing their findings of the attack that led to the murder of four Americans in Benghazi on September 11, 2012. The report cites five main reasons for the loss of life, all primarily related to inadequate security for U.S. personnel. President Obama’s January swearing-in will be a much more low-key affair than his 2009 ceremony. This time, there will only be three days of festivities instead of the four days of parties held for his first inauguration. And officials expect that the 2013 crowd will be smaller than its 2009 counterpart, Army National Guard Maj. Gen. Errol Schwartz said at a briefing last week. There will also be fewer inaugural balls, according to The Associated Press, although the list of formal celebrations has yet to be released. Gone, too, is the star-studded concert on the National Mall,

Forget the Doha climate jamboree that ended earlier this month. The theological discussions in Qatar of the arcana of climate treaties are irrelevant. By far the most important debate about climate change is taking place among scientists, on the issue of climate sensitivity: How much warming will a doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide actually produce? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has to pronounce its answer to this question in its Fifth Assessment Report next year. The general public is not privy to the IPCC debate. But I have been speaking to somebody who understands the issues: Nic Lewis.
