Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel called for a nationwide assault-weapons ban Monday in response to the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Emanuel made his remarks at a Chicago Police Department graduation ceremony Monday morning. “It’s time that we as a city have an assault weapons ban. It’s time that we as a state have an assault weapons ban. It’s time that we as a country have an assault weapons ban,” Emanuel said. “And I would hope the leadership in Congress now will have a vote of conscience. It is time to have that vote.”
Did you catch the big story out of Afghanistan the other day—the one about how a U.S. platoon was decimated in a nighttime raid? The soldiers couldn’t fight effectively because their unit cohesion had disintegrated after one of them mentioned he is gay. How about the recent study showing it is now impossible to train new jarheads at Parris Island? Marine recruits are so afraid a gay bunkmate might be eyeballing them in the shower that they can’t follow even basic commands.(Snip)You didn’t hear about those developments? Don’t be alarmed. Nobody did—because they never happened. Yet they certainly should have
Morgan Stanley & Co. has been fined $5 million for improper influence by its investment bankers over research analysts prior to the initial public stock offering of Facebook, Secretary of the Commonwealth William F. Galvin said today. Morgan Stanley was the lead underwriter on Facebook’s IPO. After the first day of the IPO roadshow to instructional investors, a top Facebook official alerted a Morgan Stanley senior investment banker that he was longer confident in the revenue guidance he had provided to syndicate research analysts in April, Galvin said, adding the senior investment banker advised
It is time for my annual pick for the year’s top member of Congress. Last year, I chose Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) for his leadership on the issue of immigration reform. In 2011, Gutierrez drew up the Dream Act and put pressure on President Obama to use his executive powers to make it law. That step sparked a political fire and set Democrats on their way to winning the Hispanic vote in 2012 and retaining control of the Senate and the White House. My choice for this year’s game changer on Capitol Hill is also at Headline resplit by staff.
HBO, the cable outlet known for its consistent liberal bias, announced today a new documentary on the life of President Bill Clinton. Guess who is offering his "full cooperation" with the project? The 42nd president himself. Any chance for an honest assessment of Clinton´s political life may have flown straight out the window. The HBO press release says the documentary will be "made with Clinton’s full cooperation ... [and] will explore his perspectives on history, politics, culture and the world." Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese, who currently works with HBO on
Those who believe that Barack Obama is an idealist first and a politician second are sorely mistaken. The Justice Department of the Obama administration decided one year ago, as his reelection effort was getting underway, to ignore proposals that would have allowed the background–check system for gun procurement to be more comprehensive. Some of these proposals made in a Justice Department study were: allowing the FBI access to other federal agencies’ information, as that would have enabled the FBI to make sure those who are banned from buying guns such as felons, drug users, mentally “defective” persons, domestic violence criminals,
Imbalance in Venezuela´s public accounts is tremendous. The gap between the public income and spending stands at 15% of gross domestic product (GDP). Therefore, it is above the level reported by some symbolic countries facing the European crisis, such as Greece (10%) and Ireland (13.4%). High oil prices and tax collection have failed to meet skyrocketing public spending, including the growing number of pensioners and civil servants, the allocation of US dollars at a low foreign exchange rate, and subsidized food, gasoline, and public utilities.
Let´s hope and pray this is a false alarm: A Turkish reporter working for the NBC TV news network is said to have been missing in Syria since Wednesday, Turkish media reported on Monday. Turkey’s NTV news channel reported that Turkish correspondent for NBC, Aziz Akyavas, went missing in Syria and has not been reached for four days. Along with Akyavas, NBC is unable to reach its Middle East bureau chief Richard Engel, who was also reporting from inside Syria. Full story here.
For an old curmudgeon like me, this is incomprehensible. Somebody somewhere made a big mistake and once they find it, all will be well and back to normal. Well, they’ve found the mistake; America elected a man dedicated to the proposition that Americans have too much, use too much of the world’s resources, and needs to humble itself before the world and beg its forgiveness. Powerline points us to this study that shows for the first time in history, America has dropped out of a list of 10 most prosperous countries in the world:
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who politicized the Sandy Hook tragedy within hours last Friday, just wrapped up a press conference announcing new plans to fight gun violence and to counter the National Rifle Association with his own Super PAC. Bloomberg was asked by a reporter to respond to Rep. Louie Gohmert´s comments over the weekend that he wished the principal of the school, who died trying to take down shooter Adam Lanza, had a gun. Bloomberg responded by saying, "There are dumb statements and then there are stupid statements.....
I avoided watching television this weekend. I didn’t think I’d be able to stand the stock phrases, the helpless tears, or the journalists losing track of themselves in order to grab useless interviews with traumatized 8 year olds. (I needn’t add “shame on them.” I suspect that, deep down, they’re already ashamed.) Most of all, I couldn’t tolerate the politicians, celebrities and commentators using the slaughter of innocents to promote their pet causes. It’s not about guns: Connecticut has very tough gun laws. It’s not about the culture: Hitler enjoyed watching Disney’s Snow White.
In the evil Obama world that came in with 2009, progressives began in earnest rewriting the narrative of the Life of the Common Citizen. Before President Barack Hussein Obama could deliver the serfdom long sought by his United Nations big bosses, the narrative had to be completely and utterly rewritten. Problem is that the average citizens of the villages, towns and cities are being forced into a starring role that obliterates the individual. Back in 2008 when Obama spat out his infamous line about bitter clingers and bible thumpers by TelePrompter, he was already thinking of permanent role casting:
The 20 young victims of Friday’s school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut are no different than those “who fall victim to armed actions” in the Gaza Strip, Iraq or Afghanistan, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman said at the weekend. An Iranian student paramilitary group, meanwhile, criticized U.S. gun laws, while President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad used the tragedy to criticize what he called the “profiteering ambitions of a certain group … which have various destructive effects on the society and particularly innocent children and youths.” An article on the foreign ministry website said ministry spokesman
CORPUS CHRISTI — Carroll High School and Kostoryz Elementary School was placed on lockdown Monday morning as a precaution while Corpus Christi police search for a male who was seen screaming and pulling a suitcase at the corner of Tiger and Carroll lanes. Corpus Christi ISD Police Chief Kirby Warnke said the schools were put into lockdown after city police contacted them about an active search for a suspect. Corpus Christi Police Senior Officer Kirk Stowers said police received a call about 10:41 a.m. about the man. Stowers didn´t have details about what the man may have been screaming.
In the wake of the of the horrific Sandy Hook School massacre, questions are arising about the effectiveness of the 1990 Gun Free School Zones Act (GFSZA). According to the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) the intent of gun-free school zones is to establish “policies prohibiting the possession of guns in schools and within a set distance of school buildings helps to secureOutgoing schools from gun-related violence and crime.” Congressman and former Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul (R – TX), proposed to repeal the 1990 legislation in July of 2011, but his bill received no co-sponsors.
Buried deep in the latest Washington Post report about fiscal cliff talks (or the lack thereof) is this item which helps explain, albeit misleadingly, the “impasse.” Two senior White House officials said that David Plouffe, Obama’s top political adviser, crafted a plan to keep the president from getting sucked into a long, public negotiation like the one that unfolded over the debt ceiling. They said that Obama’s lowest moments in his first term came in a six-month stretch of 2011 when he acted as negotiator-in-chief on the
PORTLAND -- Nick Meli is emotionally drained. The 22-year-old was at Clackamas Town Center with a friend and her baby when a masked man opened fire. "I heard three shots and turned and looked at Casey and said, ´are you serious?,´" he said. The friend and baby hit the floor. Meli, who has a concealed carry permit, positioned himself behind a pillar. "He was working on his rifle," said Meli. "He kept pulling the charging handle and hitting the side." Liberal activist and filmmaker Michael Moore says the mass murder of children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. is representative of “who we are” as Americans. “I hate to say it, but killing is our way. We began America w/ genocide, then built it w/ slaves. The shootings will continue-it´s who we are,” Moore tweeted on Sunday. Between Friday and Sunday, Moore sent out several tweets regarding the school shooting. On Friday, 20-year old-Adam Lanza shot and killed 26 people, 20 of them young children, before killing himself. Lanza also killed his mother Nancy at her home.
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who wrote the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act and authored the original assault weapons ban in the House, said Sunday that the shooting massacre in Newtown, Conn., “could be the tipping point” in advancing gun control in Congress. “Well I think we could be at a tipping point for two reasons: a tipping point where we might actually get something done. First, this was not a single incident. It followed a series of others. In the last few months, we’ve had mass shootings in Oregon and Wisconsin and Colorado,” Schumer
The gun that landed former Marine Jon Hammar in a notorious Mexican prison was legal under that country´s federal laws, according to a well-known hunting guide who leads ventures south of the border. Robert Beall, of Tall Tine Outfitters of Mexico and formerly host of the Pursuit Channel television show "World of Hunting," said the vintage Sears Roebuck shotgun that Hammar declared to Mexican customs officials in Matamoros, Mexico, Aug. 13 while on his way to Costa Rica should not have landed the 27-year-old Hammar in prison.
I think I have the Progressive/Socialist/Communist movement figured out, and the answer is God. Surprised? Read on. Humans have an instinctive desire to believe in something bigger than themselves—something all-knowing, all-seeing, all-powerful, that can make everything right when nothing seems to go right. Ask any anthropologist or archaeologist, and he or she will tell you that pretty much every culture in the history or humankind has had a set of beliefs regarding a god or gods.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) says she will introduce a gun-control bill on the first day of the next Congress: "It will ban the sale, the transfer, the importation and the possession -- not retroactively, but prospectively --" of "assault weapons" as well as high-capacity magazines. And Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said he will hold a hearing in two weeks on "this constitutional question," a reference to the Second Amendment. "That´s the starting point," he said. Feinstein, appearing on NBC´s "Meet the Press," was asked if President Obama, by not pressing for reinstatement of the "assault weapons" ban,
President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner met at the White House on Monday to discuss the imminent fiscal cliff. The meeting takes place amid reports of movement in negotiations designed to avoid the cliff, a series of tax hikes and budget cuts that kick in next year if there is no debt reduction agreement between the parties. The White House and Boehner´s office confirmed the speaker´s visit. "The President and the Speaker are meeting at the White House to continue their discussions about the fiscal cliff and balanced deficit reduction," said a statement from the White House.
Short of a plate of brisket, The Salt Lick Cookbook: A Story of Land, Family, and Love (University of Texas Press, $39.95) would surely be the No. 1 item on any barbecue lover´s wish list. As much biography as it is cookbook, it covers not just recipes but the history of one of the best known barbecue restaurants in Texas. It´s also a visual stunner, with 350 pages and breathtaking images by photographer Kenny Braun. The book occupies a special niche at CultureMap because it was co-written by Jessica Dupuy, who serves as food editor for CultureMap Austin.
The Occupy Cleveland movement ground to an anticlimactic halt last month as four of the five men accused of plotting to blow up an area bridge received prison sentences ranging from 6-11 years. “After an undercover operation, the FBI arrested the men April 30 in what the agency termed an act of domestic terrorism. The men later admitted their roles in a plan to remotely detonate improvised devices containing C-4 explosives…The men pleaded guilty in September to charges of conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction Source corrected by staff
