Former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel is apparently the prospective Obama nominee to replace Leon Panetta as the Secretary of Defense. Earlier this week my daughter Eliana reported how he has been lobbying for a senior position in the administration. With Chuck Hagel at Defense and John Kerry at State, we would have a one-two punch aimed squarely at our own head.

The aunt of the gunman suspected in the Connecticut school shooting says her nephew was raised by kind, nurturing parents who would not have hesitated to seek mental help for him if he needed it. Marsha Lanza, of northwest suburban Crystal Lake, said she was close with Adam Lanza´s mother, Nancy, and sent her a message on Facebook on Friday morning asking how she was doing. Nancy Lanza never responded. Marsha Lanza described Nancy Lanza as a good mother and kind-hearted. (Snip) Marsha Lanza said her husband saw Adam as recently as June

To the beat of Joni Mitchell’s song, Big Yellow Taxi running in the background, we’re calling on Michael Reagan and NewsMax.com to come to the rescue of an American tragedy in the making. Somewhere among the environs of the University of Chicago Medical Center, they’re about to “pave paradise and put up a parking lot”. In political lingo, the university medical center is going to demolish the house where President Ronald Reagan grew up in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighbourhood. In an era where overzealous revisionists are throwing American history out the window, it’s curtains for the

Dem. Rep. Jerrold Nadler is at least being honest about how he, and no doubt many Leftists, would like to feast off an unthinkable tragedy and exploit it in order to pursue a nonsensical agenda that would ensure only bad guys have guns. Last night on "The Ed Show," Nadler openly called for President Obama to "exploit" the murder of 20 children, “I think we will be there if the president exploits it, and otherwise we’ll go on to the next.” In his statement to the country yesterday, while he wasn´t specific about what action

Appearing on Fox News’ Your World this afternoon to discuss the tragic massacre in Newtown, Conn., former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said that we shouldn’t be surprised that schools have become a place of carnage after Americans have rejected teaching about life and responsibility by “removing God from our schools.” Host Neil Cavuto, trying to make sense of the horrific events that have transpired, asked the religious commentator what he believes many will now wonder: “How could God let this happen?” “It’s an interesting thing,” Huckabee said. “We ask why there’s violence in our schools but we’ve systematically removed God

DENVER- Sara Stevenson spends her working hours surrounded by Republicans, namely the married men who work alongside her in a Denver oil and gas firm company. But after hours and on weekends, she usually spends her time with other single women, and there´s not a Republican in sight among the bunch. "There was just no way I could have supported any Republican this year," said Stevenson, 31. "They skew so much to the religious right. ... They focused so much on taxes. It is not often that I find myself in agreement with the editorial page of the New York Times, but I did on Wednesday. The Times criticized the $1.92 billion settlement agreed to by HSBC as “a dark day for the rule of law.” No bank executives, according to the LA Times, were charged. While $1.92 billion sounds like a lot, it is about 0.06% of the banks $2.6 trillion in assets. All banks stretch the limits and meaning of regulation. HSBC, the world’s third largest bank, and one that has been frequently warned, has simply been the most egregious.

As I sit here and digest what happened to all of those children, sick doesn´t even cover the feelings I have for the parents of these innocent children. However, there is another emotion brewing in my mind as well: fear. At home I own several firearms, and frankly, anyone forcing entry to my home would have a very short life expectancy. However, each day I have to send my children off to a place where the only protection they have is the ideology of wishful thinking. All it takes to take

On Friday, we learned that more than two dozen people were killed when a gunman opened fire in an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. Most of those who died were just young children with their whole lives ahead of them. And every parent in America has a heart heavy with hurt. Among the fallen were also teachers—men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children fulfill their dreams.

I’ve been out of pocket pretty much since the first sketchy reports this morning about a possible school shooting. A meeting, a luncheon and then 6 hours in the car.The car ride was enlightening because I followed the details of the Connecticut school shooting exclusively by listening to the radio. As in all these cases, the facts changed as the day went on. First, it was a mass shooting with a semi-automatic assault rifle, which the news reports noted would put back on the political table the

Bloomberg and gay-rights advocates vowed to do everything in their power to protect them against political retribution. State Senator Stephen M. Saland, one of four Republicans to vote to legalize same-sex marriage, conceded to his Democratic opponent on Thursday.

When called upon, he was intelligent, but nervous and fidgety, spitting his words out, as if having to speak up were painful. Pale, tall and scrawny, Adam Lanza walked through high school in Newtown, Conn., with his hands glued to his sides, the pens in the pocket of his short-sleeve, button-down shirts among the few things that his classmates recalled about him.

Okay, so our jaunty Augustus didn´t use the word "cave," but he might as well have skipped the niceties and used the C-word. Why not rub it in? One doubts that the empurpled leader of the erstwhile American Republic would say on national TV "I´m pretty confident that Republicans would not hold middle class taxes hostage to trying to protect tax cuts for high-income individuals" unless he had a good read on his adversaries

The president, hinting at possible legislation, pledged "meaningful action" to prevent more killings in the future. Egypt´s controversial draft constitution will be put to a national referendum on 15 and 22 December. Very few of its 236 articles were agreed to smoothly by members of the Islamist-led Constituent Assembly. The draft, which was approved after a 14-hour voting session on 30 November, was strongly condemned by opponents, many of whom left the assembly prior to the final vote, criticising the drafting process. On 1 December, President Mohamed Morsi officially received the draft constitution and called for a national referendum on 15 December amid rival mass protests between supporters and

Smarting over Senate Republicans’ criticism of envoy Susan E. Rice that ended her chances of becoming secretary of state, the White House took an apparent swipe Friday at Sen. John McCain’s pick of Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential running mate in 2008. “The leading critics of Ambassador Rice, with their wildly unfounded assertions, have a spotty record at best when it comes to making judgments about who is qualified for high office in this country,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. In the quarter-century that Armentha Cruise has run her Silver Spring staffing firm, the nation has made strides toward racial equality. Voters have twice elected a black president, African Americans shine among Hollywood’s brightest stars, and the number of blacks who graduate from college has tripled. But this stubborn fact remains: The African American jobless rate is about twice that of whites, a disparity that has barely budged since the government began tracking the data in 1972. In last week’s jobs report, the black unemployment rate was 13.2 percent, while the white rate stood at 6.8 percent.

THE HORROR IS BEYOND WORDS: a peaceful school in a peaceful town turned upside down by a man with guns, children and teachers killed, families torn asunder, lives altered unimaginably and forever. And then, almost as horrible, the familiarity of the event. We have been here before, we know the drill. The details of the shooting will be particular — the precise number of casualties, the killer’s exact route, how he finally was stopped or stopped himself — we know the drill. Over the coming days we will hear of grief counselors and evacuation plans.
