Todd Cefaratti, the president of TheTeaParty.net, has a message for Republicans and Democrats alike: “This is just the beginning. If you think the tea party’s dead, you ain’t seen nothing yet.” At a press conference inside the Capitol Hill Club in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday afternoon, Cefarratti’s organization and several House Republicans joined with Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul to decry House GOP leadership considering capitulating to Democratic efforts to raise taxes during the fiscal cliff negotiations. A more subtle message that carried throughout the presser, though,
This is your regular reminder that the best taxers aren’t always the best taxees: A new report just out from the Internal Revenue Service reveals that 36 of President Obama’s executive office staff owe the country $833,970 in back taxes. This per the IRS. Federal employees as a group owe a whopping $3.4 billion in unpaid taxes, including 1,181 employees of the Treasury Department delinquent on a total of $9.3 million in taxes. (But do you recall the most famous delinquent of all? Tim Geithner had to pay $42,000 in back taxes before his confirmation as Treasury Secretary.)
A federal judge appointed by former President Bill Clinton has ordered five Connecticut nursing homes to rehire striking employees despite a criminal investigation into allegations that some of those workers endangered the lives of seniors. Judge Robert Chatigny on Wednesday ordered Healthbridge Systems to lay off hundreds of replacement workers in order to make room for the 600 striking members of the SEIU Local 1199, one of the Atlantic region’s most powerful unions. Those workers walked out of their jobs over a contract dispute in July. Some employees allegedly tampered with the identification materials
A high profile announcement by Mexico’s newly inaugurated president has put energy reform on the front burner. In an interview with the Financial Times, Mr. Enrique Peña Nieto outlined the historic reforms he intends to push for Mexico’s energy sector: Mr Pena Nieto said the reform proposal could be sent to congress in the first half of 2013, and approved before the end of the year. “It is about giving space so that the private sector participates with the idea of strengthening the capacity of the Mexican state,” he said.
Monday saw the election of Mauritania to the position of vice president of the UN Human Rights Council. That’s the same Mauritania, mind you, with almost a million of its own people in chattel slavery. We’re sure that the council’s president-elect, Poland, is looking forward to working with its honorable new partner. The worst part of this sorry debacle is that the General Assembly had the gall to confer this responsibility on Mauritania on Human Rights Day, while everyone else was trying to celebrate the 64th birthday of the Universal Declaration
The 12-12-12 concert for Hurricane Sandy relief features performances by Sir Paul McCartney, Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, and Kanye West. The concert will benefit the Robin Hood Foundation, which has received at least $50 million from George Soros. Soros is the organizer of the shadowy Democracy Alliance. The group has a history of funding controversial programs. The Robin Hood Foundation made a $40,000 grant for a needle exchange program for drug addicts in 1993. More recently, the foundation was caught investing charity dollars into its donors’ and members’ hedge funds.
CHICAGO, Illinois – A new bill to permit 250,000 illegal immigrants to receive driver’s licenses could be in big trouble in Illinois. The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR), the group that is behind the bill, is fending off blows from Illinois law enforcement over the bill’s lack of security safeguards. Opponents say the bill was stripped of key safety and security provisions once it gained political support and outrage has set in. In Springfield, state police chiefs are opposing the bill, SB957, demanding that safeguards be put back in. Greg Sullivan,
Promoting travel to America can be expensive — especially if Uncle Sam is footing most of the bill. Documents exclusively obtained by The Daily Caller show extensive waste and mismanagement at the public-private partnership Brand USA, a government-backed travel-promotion agency established in May 2011 under Travel Promotion Act of 2009 to encourage foreign travelers to visit the United States. Some of the new organization’s recent expenses include $4,139 for 250 holiday cards, $3,592 for a holiday e-card and $2,449 for a ringtone version of the Rosanne Cash song “Land of Dreams,”
ObamaCare was supposed to stop this sort of thing, wasn’t it? That’s how Pelosi, Obama et al sold the law, but its plain effect has been to hike taxes and rates. Health insurer Blue Shield of California wants to raise rates as much as 20% for some individual policyholders, prompting calls for the nonprofit to use some of its record-high reserve of $3.9 billion to hold down premiums. In filings with state regulators, Blue Shield is seeking an average rate increase of 12% for more than 300,000 customers, effective in March, with a maximum increase of 20%.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said there are serious “mismatches” in U.S. immigration policy in terms of “our economic needs, our law enforcement needs and our values.” “I think that, having dealt with border enforcement and immigration enforcement for the last 20 years, I can say it is time to look at the entire system,” she said on PBS last night, expressing optimism that immigration reform may come after the fiscal cliff is negotiated. “As Congress begins to take this subject up — and we hope they will — we would be there to provide them real assistance and
Democratic Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey seemed absolutely shocked and appalled Tuesday afternoon, when MSNBC anchor Tamron Hall kicked off their interview on comprehensive immigration reform by asking him about breaking news from the Associated Press regarding the arrest and deportation order against an intern in the senator´s office who is a registered sex offender. According to the report, the arrest was deliberately timed to fall AFTER the November 6 presidential election. "Do you know anything about this report, senator," Hall asked a visibly annoyed Menendez.
Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R- UT) told Breitbart News on Wednesday that he has been “thwarted” by the State Department from seeing any Americans who survived the deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi. Many people forget that there were Americans who survived the Benghazi attack, some of whom were badly injured and are still recovering. “My understanding is that we still have some people in the hospital. I’d like to visit with them and wish them nothing but the best but the State Department has seen it unfit for me to know who
Local Lansing Michigan hot dog vendor Clint Tarver was catering for Americans For Prosperity during the right-to-work demonstrations at the State Capitol on Tuesday, when two men rushed into the tent. In a video interview with Breitbart News, Clint claims one of the men wore a "Devil Mask." When reporter Lee Stranahan describes a Guy Fawkes mask, Tarver indicates that it sounds like that is what the assailant wore. Tarver was shown a photo of a Guy Fawkes mask after the interview and confirmed that it what the attacker who
So confident are NASA that the apocalypse will not happen on December 21st that they have released a video 10 days ahead of schedule entitled ´Why the World Didn´t End Yesterday´. Outlining point by point each of the so called ´myths´ that surround the end of the Mayan calendar, astronomical and planetary experts debunk any notions that the sun will irradiate the atmosphere or that a rogue planet will smash into our Earth. But while no soul will be around to point and laugh at anyone from the U.S. space agency should they be wrong,
"Is there not an appreciation for the Jewish holidays? The Christmas holiday? Kwanzaa? All the other things that families come together around? Bonding rituals important to the strength of our society? Do we not care about that? Well, the American people do. And they want to shop for it." - Wednesday, December 12, 2012, House Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on the house floor Headline split by staff
WASHINGTON — The income stagnation that has hit the middle class in the last decade is complicating the Democrats’ position in the fiscal talks, making it more difficult for them to advocate across-the-board tax increases if a deal falls through. Many Democrats have derided the expiring tax cuts as irresponsible since President George W. Bush signed them a decade ago. Yet the party is united in pushing to make the vast majority of them permanent, even though President Obama could ensure their expiration at year’s end with a simple veto.
"President Obama´s ´Plan´ Adds $8.6 Trillion to the Debt," the minority side of the Senate Budget Committee contends. Here´s a chart put together by the Republicans on the committee to explain how Obama´s plan adds to the debt: The $400 billion in deficit reduction would be achieved by a $1.6 trillion tax hike, which Obama has proposed as part of the "fiscal cliff" deal. With Obama´s latest plan, debt in 2022 is expected to be $25.4 trillion; otherwise, in ten years, it is expected to be $25.8 trillion. "With the adoption of the Budget Control Act
“I think in fact it is the opposite, Neil, that a lot people are happy to give this impression,” Steyn replied. “It is extremely valuable for people to understand that your guys mean it and you may want to play along because, otherwise, things are going to get very unpleasant for you. That is the message these guys are sending in Michigan. It’s basically the domestic version of what you see in the Arab Spring. All of these protests against Morsi in Cairo were completely peaceful, then Muslim Brotherhood show up to protest and seven people die.
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX): "There is no way, Mr. Speaker, that we should raise the eligibility age for Medicare, that we should not think carefully about how we approach the reform of Medicaid. And that we don´t the American people that Social Security is solvent. So, I would say move quickly to pass the middle class tax cuts that would be for all Americans, 100% up to 250,000 dollars. And let´s think about, moving into 2013, how we make this economy better by looking carefully at how we reform entitlements that are not hand-outs, but they are earned."
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said that he wasn´t responsible for helping President Obama to win a second term in an interview with ABC News´ Barbara Walters set to air Wednesday. Christie has been criticized by some Republicans for embracing President Obama in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, speaking appreciatively about the federal assistance offered to his state. But Christie adamantly denied that the bipartisan photo-ops with the president were of any assistance on Election Day. "First of all, I didn´t help [Obama] win," Christie said.
"I´m in the top two percent," said Peter Schiff, CEO of Euro Pacific Capital, this week on CNBC. "Right now, I´m paying 45 percent of my total income in income taxes ... You tell me, what´s fair about that when medieval serfs pay 25 percent, I´m paying half? I don´t care what the majority voted to do, they don´t have a right to steal my money just because they vote for it." But according to most Americans, they do. And that´s the problem. As America racks up more debt than God has ever seen on this earth,
Santa Claus came to Capitol Hill on Wednesday to deliver a message to Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio): pass President Obama´s middle-class tax cut bill or you´ll be on the naughty list. The roly-poly white-bearded man dressed in his seasonal red attire slid right past the “Official Business Only” sign in the alcove to Boehner’s Capitol Hill digs. With an entourage of paparazzi (five photographers) and a handler from the liberal group “Catholics United,” “Santa” asked a good-natured Speaker staffer for “two minutes” of Boehner’s time. The wide-eyed aide, hidden behind a desk
As the president gets closer to achieving his most cherished political ambition — raising taxes on the top earners in our country — I´ve started to wonder what satisfaction he, and those he´s convinced this is a good idea, will actually experience. Forget all the silly speeches. By any seriously objective standard, the president´s tax increases will do little or nothing to reduce his deficits or his approaching legacy of extraordinary national debt. Without increasing taxes more broadly and without structurally reforming our entitlement programs, which now appears likely, the president´s plan changes virtually nothing about the direction or funding of
As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton prepares to testify on Capitol Hill next week about last September’s attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, a Republican lawmaker is urging her to cut aid to Tunisia over its refusal to allow the FBI to talk to the only known detained suspect in the attack. Speaking on the U.S. House floor Wednesday, Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) accused Tunisian authorities of hampering the FBI’s investigation into the attack in Libya’s second city, during which U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed.
Twenty blocks from the Capitol sits a 60-by-40-foot model of Washington, D.C., that military officials and others are using to prepare for Inauguration Day festivities. The D.C. model — complete with a two-foot-tall Washington Monument and toy-like recreations of the Capitol and White House — was being used for a military exercise to simulate the parade route on the real Pennsylvania Avenue NW. In addition to the model monuments, there were pink placards that showed where the different divisions will be located along the parade route, including designations for everything from bathrooms to areas for floats.
