Exodus: California, once a magnet for the enterprising and ambitious, is losing residents. There´s not so much a giant sucking sound coming from the Golden State as there is the hiss of a balloon losing its air. The Census Bureau says that California had a net loss of 100,000 people last year. Many headed for Texas (58,992), while Arizona (49,635), Nevada (40,114), Washington (38,421) and Oregon (34,214) all took in fleeing Californians. So what´s the state´s trouble? Here´s a partial list. The Tax Foundation ranks California behind only New York and New Jersey as the worst state

The new US Army handbook for our soldiers operating in Afghanistan literally blames America first, for the 63 US troops who have been murdered by Afghan soldiers and police they were attempting to train. A draft of the handbook, which has not be published yet, was leaked to the Wall Street Journal.According to the manual: “Better situational awareness/understanding of Afghan culture will help better prepare [troops] to more effectively partner and to avoid cultural conflict that can lead toward green-on-blue violence.” Fine, that doesn’t sound out of line at first read.

Not so many moons ago, President Obama urged us all to "make sure that we are talking with each other in a way that heals, not a way that wounds." He Who Heals advocated "a more civil and honest public discourse" in the wake of the January 2011 Tucson massacre. As usual, though, the White House has granted Big Labor bullies a permanent waiver from the lofty edicts it issues to everyone else. This week, menacing union goons unleashed threats, profanity and punches in Michigan, which is now poised to become a "right-to-work" state. Obama met the initial outbreak of violence with the same response

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday promised to keep interest rates near zero until unemployment dips below 6.5 percent or inflation climbs above 2.5 percent, linking monetary policy to specific targets for the first time. The central bank also announced it was expanding its efforts at "quantitative easing," and is now committed to buying $45 billion in Treasury bonds per month, beginning in 2013, to complement the monthly purchases of $40 billion in mortgage debt that are already underway. Setting explicit, numerical targets for Fed action is a new effort by

What planet is Robert F. Kennedy Jr. living on? He was interviewed on the Internet last week by some squirrelly guy with what now seems to be the obligatory English accent. And so Kennedy, a convicted felon (heroin possession, 1983, South Dakota) pointed the finger at a new vast right-wing conspiracy: “(It’s) the right wing control of the American media starting with Fox News. Ninety-five percent of talk radio in our country is right wing ... so a whole section of our country that’s what they’re hearing.” You don’t say, Junior.

As you might have heard, the good folks at Gawker are asking themselves: “Do We Really Have to Condemn the Union Protestor (sic) Who Punched Fox News Comedian Steven Crowder?” To many, this attitude is surprising. Liberals are portrayed as nonviolent and peace-loving. And some of them are. But some on he left prefer an “ends-justify-the-means” mentality. And that seems to be on full display right now.

Here is a strong indicator that the Obama Administration’s crusade to appease Islam has gone too far; a new U.S. military handbook for troops deployed to the Middle East orders soldiers not to make derogatory comments about the Taliban or criticize pedophilia, among other outrageous things. It gets better; the new manual, which is around 75 pages, suggests that Western ignorance of Afghan culture— not Taliban infiltration—is responsible for the increase in deadly attacks by Afghan soldiers against the coalition forces. The soon-to-be-released Army handbook is still being drafted, but a mainstream newspaper got a sneak preview

U.S. Sen. Scott Brown said farewell to his colleagues this morning — but gave a strong hint he has every intention of returning to the Senate. “Victory and defeat is temporary,” Brown told his fellow senators in his farewell address from the Senate floor. “Depending on what happens and where we go, all of us, we may obviously meet again.” Brown lost the 2012 election to Democrat Elizabeth Warren, but many political observers say he the popular Republican likely to remain active in the Massachusetts political scene. Some have speculated that Brown may run again

WASHINGTON —The Federal Reserve will spend $45 billion a month to sustain an aggressive drive to keep long-term interest rates low. And it set a goal of keeping a key short-term rate near zero until unemployment drops below 6.5 percent. The policies are intended to help an economy that the Fed says is growing only modestly with 7.7 percent unemployment in November. The Fed said in a statement issued Wednesday that it will direct the money into long-term Treasurys to replace an expiring bond-purchase program. The new purchases will expand its investment portfolio, which has reached nearly $3 trillion.

Marrakech, Morocco - More than 100 countries on Wednesday recognized a new Syrian opposition coalition, further isolating the regime and opening the way for greater humanitarian assistance to the forces battling Bashar Assad. The opposition has been under intense international pressure to create a more organized and representative body to receive foreign aid, so it formed the Syrian National Coalition in Doha, Qatar, in November, and it was widely applauded at the conference in Morocco. "With every day that passes, the regime´s hold on power weakens.

PRISTINA, Kosovo — Prime Minister Hashim Thaci is in a bind. His country’s largest and most lucrative enterprise, the state telecommunications company, is up for sale. The jostling among buyers is intense. Narrowing the bidders has hardly helped. One bid is from a fund founded by former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright. Lobbying for another was James W. Pardew, the Clinton-era special envoy to the Balkans. Both former diplomats are among the Americans who hold the status of heroes here for their roles in the 1999 intervention

On Monday, Republican National Committee Chairman Priebus announced that a five person team of insiders will chair the committee responsible for his much promised "autopsy" of the failed 2012 Republican campaign. Priebus had promised that the "autopsy" would be conducted by outsiders, but a look at the backgrounds of the team members confirms what conservative and grassroots critics have suspected would be the case: it´s an inside job. Politico reported the details:

Put me down as one as a Cuban-American who voted for Romney. Yes, we saw that "hope and change" movie before and it does not end well. Trust me: Very bad ending! Just ask my parents and all of those Cubans who came here in the 1960s! Today, I saw a poll that 77% of Latino voters support raising taxes on the rich. Here is a message to the GOP: Amnesty or immigration reform had nothing to do with Obama carrying Hispanos by a huge margin.

The memorandum from the Congressional Committee on Oversight and Government Reform asks a question at the beginning of a document called -- "HGH Testing and the NFL: Is the Science Ready?" Interesting question, sure, but it´s what´s at the end of the document that seems to unintentionally answer Congress´ own question. Those final paragraphs read: "Identifying and punishing users of performance-enhancing drugs, such as HGH, in professional football and other sports, protects the integrity of the NFL and other leagues, as well as the health of their players.

A House GOP source has confirmed to Breitbart News that House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy was the one who drafted the secret criteria list House Speaker John Boehner used in his purge of conservatives from House committees. The source, someone with inside knowledge of how Boehner conducted the purge, told Breitbart News that McCarthy crafted the list, which included a scorecard of where several conservative members stood on certain votes. According to the source, it’s unclear at this time whether McCarthy made the list of his own accord or if he did so at the request of somebody else

INDIANAPOLIS -- Calling it a vital national security issue, Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard today signed Executive Order #6, 2012 making Indianapolis the first city in the nation to require the purchase of either electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles for the city´s non-police fleet. Mayor Ballard outlined his proposal this morning in a speech to the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee. "The United States´ current transportation energy model, driven by oil, exacts an enormous cost financially and in terms of strategic leverage," said Mayor Ballard, a retired Marine Officer and Gulf War Veteran. Mohammad Safi, a graduate of a medical school in Afghanistan, began working as a psychiatrist at a California mental hospital in 2006, making $90,682 in his first six months. Last year, he took home $822,302, all of it paid by taxpayers. Safi benefited from what amounted to a bidding war after a federal court forced the state to improve inmate care. The prisons raised pay to lure psychiatrists, the mental health department followed suit to keep employees, and costs soared. Last year, 16 California psychiatrists, including Safi, made more than $400,000, while only one did in the other 11 most

The University of Chicago is about to demolish Ronald Reagan´s early childhood home. Can it be stopped? All of Ronald Reagan´s formative years, from birth until he landed his first job across the Mississippi 21 years later, were lived in rural northwestern Illinois except for about ten months in Chicago. In all but one case, his rural boyhood homes have been preserved. His birthplace in Tampico looks as it did when he was born and is open to the public. So is his teen years home in Dixon.

Representative Michele Bachmann, who briefly led the 2012 Republican presidential field, has said that Barack Obama is determined ´to lift up the Islamists´ and bow to their ´ultimate demand´ of imposing Sharia law on America. She said that Americans should study Islamist texts just as those worried about fascism pored over Adolf Hitler´s ´Mein Kampf´ in the 1930s and 1940s. In an extended on-air conversation with conservative radio hosts Jan Markell and Eric Barger, Bachmann, who narrowly won re-election to the House of Representatives last month, contended that Obama was endangering

Former DNC Chairman Howard Dean says Republicans will have to change their philosophy and not just their ground game in order to win in the future. Dean says conservatives can not sell hate of women, gays and immigrants and expect to win elections. HOWARD DEAN: The big problem is though, that ground game is not enough to win. The fact of the matter is you can not peddle hate of immigrants, gays and lesbians, and women by saying that God´s will was to make women pregnant when they were raped.

The U.S. should consider automatically registering eligible voters and extending voting hours to counter the November election’s long lines and administrative hurdles, Attorney General Eric Holder said. Holder, speaking today at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston, proposed expanding access for voters and overhauling a registration system he called “antiquated.” “It is important for national leaders, academic experts, and members of the public to engage in a frank, thorough and inclusive discussion about how our election systems can be made stronger and more accessible,”

The accuracy of a claim that had generated significant chatter in liberal circles regarding Fox News boss Roger Ailes having "benched" Karl Rove as a contributor in the aftermath of the presidential election is being called into question, as Rove re-appeared on the network just one week after it was alleged that he had been effectively suspended as a political commentator. Last week, New York magazine´s appointed Fox News observer, Gabriel Sherman, wrote that shakeups in the cast of "characters" featured on Fox had taken place in the wake of the election,

Without fanfare, CNN dumped Jack Cafferty, the curmudgeon who, like the network, portrayed himself as an independent but railed more often than not against conservatives. According to Media Bistro, CNN did not renew Cafferty´s contract and his last day at the news network was on November 15, which was also the last time he appeared on "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer," where he contributed commentary on a near-daily basis.
