President Obama and his family have flipped the switch for the 90th annual lighting of the National Christmas Tree, marking the holiday season in the nation´s capital. Mr Obama was joined by his daughters, Sasha and Malia, and wife Michelle. All were bundled to shield themselves from the cold December night. Also helping in the festive ceremony was actor and singer Neil Patrick Harris, who hosted the tree-lighting ceremony. ‘Merry Christmas, everybody!’ the president began. He was wearing a black wool overcoat and a maroon scarf tucked loosely in his jacket.

Ed Henry, Fox News’ White House correspondent, spoke about his job and his network in an Associated Press story published on Thursday. Among the topics covered in the piece was Fox News’ attention to Benghazi. The network covered the issue “more than it needed to be covered,” Henry said. It’s hardly gone unnoticed that Fox News has consistently and critically covered the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi — questioning the Obama administration’s response. UN Ambassador Susan Rice, in particular, has taken heat for the comments she made on Sunday talk shows.

WASHINGTON — On the same day the White House ruled out using the 14th Amendment to raise the federal debt limit, a Democratic senator said that tack should be reserved as "an option." "I don´t think they ought to rule it out," Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin told reporters Thursday. The 14th Amendment asserts that "the validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law... shall not be questioned." Some have argued that the president could use this as justification to unilaterally raise the debt limit, though it´s unclear

On his program on Thursday, MSNBC host Chris Matthews played a series of clips of self-identified Republicans or surrogates for Mitt Romney’s campaign from the past year for former Congressman J.C. Watts in an effort to get him to admit the Republican party’s leadership were speaking in “dog whistles” to communicate for voters that “we don’t like black presidents.” Matthews played a series of clips from GOP supporters like Donald Trump and John Sununu and asked how Watts reacted to them. “On the birther thing, I think that’s a losing issue,”

Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) isn´t ruling out a 2014 Senate run to replace Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.). "It´s not a ´no,´ but it´s not a ´yes,´" Sanford told the Wall Street Journal when asked about a run, after saying he´d been bombarded by calls from supporters asking him to run for DeMint´s seat. DeMint announced Thursday morning that he would resign from the Senate to take over the conservative Heritage Foundation. President Obama’s health care overhaul contains a tax that will drive up premiums for individuals, families, and even Medicare Advantage beneficiaries, according to a new study released by America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). Obamacare “imposes a new sales tax on health insurance that starts at $8 billion in 2014, increase to $14.3 billion in 2018, and will continue to increase each year,” AHIP explains to introduce the study on the Health Insurance Tax (HIT). Although the government taxes the health insurance providers, the Congressional Budget Office acknowledged in 2009 that the cost

Chris Matthews´ affinity for Bill Clinton is well known. But on Wednesday´s Hardball, Mathews argued that the Democrat would be the best lobbyist to get one into heaven. [See video below. MP3 audio here.] Talking to journalist Joe Klein and GOP strategist David Winston, Matthews lauded the former president´s campaigning for Barack Obama. The liberal host enthused, "...I have to tell you, who would you rather have make your case to Saint Peter than this guy?" Clinton, of course, was accused of rape by Juanita Broaddrick, of sexual assault by Kathleen Willey and by Paula Jones of exposing himself."

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said that extending long-term unemployment benefits would be the “best stimulus there is” for the economy, saying it would create the most jobs for the money. “At the end of last year, there were 5 million people receiving emergency UI [unemployment insurance]. This year, there are only 2 million. It’s working,” Schumer said at a press conference Thursday. “We’re all talking about a stimulus. How do we get the economy moving? This is the best stimulus there is.” Schumer and fellow Senate Democrats called for yet another extension of benefits for the long-term unemployed

Obama expected to push

With President Obama´s final election behind him, gun-control advocates said they expect the White House to begin pushing through an assortment of gun restrictions in coming months. Obama rarely talked about guns during his re-election campaign, and when he did, it was mostly to reassure voters he had no plans to take away their constitutionally protected firearms. The president has been preoccupied with negotiations over a deficit-reduction deal since last month´s election, but activists said they expect Obama to become a much more vocal proponent of gun control in 2013.

Last night, radio host Mark Levin said that President Obama plans to unilaterally and unconstitutionally lift the debt ceiling, thereby circumventing Congress and avoiding negotiations with them. Levin also stated that President Obama plans to play the “catch me if you can, take me to the court” game by taking this unilateral action, because he will be able to get away with it by the time it reaches the Supreme Court. “We’ve never had a president that’s spent like this ever. Ever. That’s why, in particular right now, the debt ceiling is so crucial,

First Lady Michelle Obama would defeat Republican Sen. Mark Kirk by 11 points in a hypothetical race for his Illinois Senate seat. According to a new poll, Mrs. Obama leads the incumbent senator 51 to 40 percent in a head-to-head match-up. The poll also found that 34% of voters approve of the job Kirk is doing, while 19% disapprove. The senator´s approval number is no match to Michelle Obama´s, however, with 60% of voters viewing the First Lady positively. Nonetheless, Mrs. Obama has said in the past that she is not interested in running for office:

"Mubarak and his loyalists are blamed for jailing and harshly mistreating innocents" before the uprising. George Zimmerman´s lawyers

George Zimmerman´s lawyers say prosecutors are deliberately dragging their feet, and accused the Duval County State Attorney of delaying - and even hiding - evidence that suggests their client is innocent. It took months and the judge´s intervention for lawyers to get a vivid color copy of Zimmerman´s bloody injuries. The defense didn´t find out about witnesses who had helpful information until recently, and attorneys learned of a police officer´s full role in the case by word of mouth. Papers filed in Seminole County Court in Sanford accuse prosecutors of withholding exculpatory information by delaying reports and a key audio tape.

With not an arresting officer in sight crowds of smiling people lit joints under Seattle’s Space Needle on early Thursday morning celebrating marijuana now legal under Washington state law. Hundreds gathered at Seattle Center for a New Year´s Eve-style countdown to 12am, when the legalization measure passed by voters last month took effect. When the clock struck, they cheered and sparked up in unison. A few dozen people gathered on a sidewalk outside the north Seattle headquarters of the annual Hempfest celebration and did the same, offering joints to reporters and blowing smoke into television news cameras.

OK, so marijuana is now legal in Washington state. But does that mean it´s good for you? "Daily use increases the risk of becoming dependent," says Roger Roffman, a professor emeritus at the University of Washington´s School of Social Work. He supported Initiative 502, which called for the legalization of a small amount of marijuana for adults 21 and older in Washington. Roffman says there are positive outcomes of marijuana use. Consumption of it can be for medical purposes, and it can reduce symptoms of disease and treatments of disease, he says.

A New York federal judge may rule imminently on a case that could reverse the General Motors (GM) bailout and send the company back into bankruptcy, according to sources close to the case. At issue is a backroom deal hatched by GM to fulfill the Obama administration’s demand for a quick bankruptcy, draining the automaker of nearly all of its cash on hand and leaving it in worse shape than it was when it collapsed in 2009. One condition of GM’s bailout was to shore up its overseas subsidiaries. On the eve of entering bankruptcy,
