SACRAMENTO, Calif — Former President Bill Clinton said Tuesday that Democrats and Republicans are like dogs "sniffing each other out" over a piece of meat in their negotiation to avert the "fiscal cliff," suggesting the two sides are approaching a deal. Clinton told a Sacramento audience that while watching news of the negotiation Tuesday he feared "the American people are going to be sick when they watch this." "But it´s just a Kabuki dance," Clinton said at Memorial Auditorium. "They´re sort of like two dogs that meet each other over a piece of meat. They´re sniffing each other out.

Troy, Ohio — The rise in poverty here is evident in the mass of people who crowd the waiting room of the free health clinic every Thursday night -- so many that the volunteer staff turns away about half of them. It is marked by the bare shelves of the pantry at Richards Chapel United Methodist Church, a one-story sanctuary where laid-off factory workers, retirees and parents with children fill the dining hall for a free lunch. And it is lived by Nancy Scott, a former stay-at-home mom working a temporary minimum-wage job

NYPD officer Larry DePrimo was unaware that he had been caught on camera giving a homeless man a pair of socks and weatherproof boots he had purchased for him. A passing tourist from Arizona, Jennifer Foster, caught the selfless act and sent it to the NYPD Facebook page. The photo has gone viral and has generated mixed reactions from activists for the homeless who assert that DePrimo´s compassion does not represent the NYPD´s routine treatment of the homeless. That may be their viewpoint but Officer DePrimo reminds me of the cops I knew as a child when I lived in Spanish Harlem.

My fellow expatriate, Piers Morgan, appears to be on yet another quest to embarrass himself, this time by taking the Constitution’s amendments one by one and demonstrating in public that he has no idea what they mean. In the wake of Bob Costas’s anti-gun rant, Morgan took to Twitter to complain about the Second Amendment: Piers Morgan ?@piersmorgan The 2nd amendment was devised with muskets in mind, not high-powered handguns & assault rifles. ObamaCare: 21 States Reject

ObamaCare´s subsidized insurance exchanges are supposed to be up and running in little more than a year, putting a key piece of the federal health care law into action. But it´s unclear that will happen, especially with a growing number of states saying they don´t want the cost and regulatory headaches. The exchanges are where consumers without employer-based coverage will shop for insurance under ObamaCare and receive a tax credit toward its purchase if they are eligible. But 21 states have expressly declined to set up their own exchanges, with nine others still undecided ahead of the Dec. 14 deadline.

Closed: The federal government wants California´s biggest oyster farm to shut down. Not because it´s broken the law or is irredeemably dirty. Washington just wants it to go away. Last week, one day before the Drakes Bay Oyster Co.´s 40-year-lease expired, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar himself told the company that the deal was not going to be renewed. He gave the business 90 days to clear out of the Point Reyes National Seashore estuary in west Marin County. The oyster company operates on about 1,100 acres of a 2,700-acre plot that Washington wants to return to nature.

Veteran journalist Bob Woodward was interviewed this morning by Mike Allen about his reporting behind President Obama’s presidency. During the conversation, Allen suggested that perhaps Woodward was “disappointed” in the Obama presidency. “I wouldn’t say disappointed,” Woodward said immediately. “It goes to the question of what’s our job in the news media and our job is not to be cheerleaders.” Woodward noted that the job was to be an “irritant” of people in power by “asking and raising questions.” “That’s the job.” he concluded.

President Obama and his advisers keep suggesting that they’d like to do more about climate change, but Congress just won’t cooperate. Now one environmental group is arguing that the Obama administration doesn’t even need Congress to make sweeping cuts to U.S. carbon emissions. On Tuesday, the Natural Resources Defense Council released a new report explaining how the Environmental Protection Agency could enforce sharp emissions cuts at America’s power plants. Why does President Obama want your child to read “Executive Order 13423: Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management” in school? It’s not the business of a president to shape your local school’s reading assignments. The Constitution and several federal laws prohibit it. Yet by conditioning federal education aid and regulatory waivers on state acceptance of the “Common Core,” Obama has managed to manipulate the states into adopting what is fast becoming a de facto national K-12 curriculum. Parents across the country are just now waking up to the fact that President Obama has forced what is

The Republican Party’s must reject its leaders’ cringing defeatism over the fiscal cliff talks. Consider the situation: With a president from one political party and a House speaker from the other, some kind of compromise should obviously be needed to pass tax hikes and other major pieces of legislation. That being so, the president would have to make concessions to Congress and not cling dogmatically to his position concerning taxes. In the end he would reluctantly yield to this advice and agree to back off from his long-held views, in exchange for spending measures supposedly accepted by the speaker.

Three quotes to whet your appetite, followed by the punch line from the president. House Republicans´ latest "fiscal cliff" resolution package -- originally proposed by Democrat Erskine Bowles -- includes $800 Billion in new federal revenues, while lowering tax rates across the board. Democrats instantly rejected the idea, making a heavy play about "the math" not adding up. They´ve repeatedly contended that Republicans´ plan to expand the tax base by closing loopholes, eliminating or capping deductions, and limiting credits cannot hit their projected revenue target.

President Obama warned Republicans against using a hike in the debt ceiling as leverage to win entitlement cuts, arguing it would play havoc with the economy. In an address to corporate CEOs at the Business Roundtable, Obama said business leaders “should not accept going thorough” another debt ceiling crisis like the one in 2011 that caused stocks to fall and led Standard and Poor’s to devalue the U.S. credit rating. He warned a repeat of that showdown would be a “catastrophe” for the nation that would cause a “self-inflicted series of wounds that will potentially

NEW YORK- Thanks to the election, socialism and capitalism are forever wed as Merriam-Webster´s most looked-up words of 2012. Traffic for the unlikely pair on the company´s website about doubled this year from the year before as the health care debate heated up and discussion intensified over "American capitalism" versus "European socialism," said the editor at large, Peter Sokolowski. The choice revealed Wednesday was "kind of a no-brainer," he said. The Jack Kemp Foundation holds an annual dinner to celebrate the legacy of the late Republican perhaps best known for referring to himself as a “bleeding heart conservative.” But in an ornate ballroom at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington Tuesday night, it was not so much Kemp’s memory as the recent pain of Mitt Romney’s infamous “47 percent” remarks that hung over the proceedings. The dinner, at which Sen. Marco Rubio received the Kemp Leadership Award, featured speeches by both Rubio and Rep. Paul Ryan.

WASHINGTON — Dick Armey’s resignation as chairman of FreedomWorks follows months of turmoil, accusations of unethical behavior, top officials being put on administrative leave and a wave of staff departures inside the tea party-affiliated organization. Multiple sources inside FreedomWorks told The Daily Caller that Armey’s resignation — made public this week but in the works for months – came about after the former House Majority Leader became angry with how FreedomWorks CEO and president Matt Kibbe was operating the organization. “We had serious differences of opinion about the process of how you do business and I wanted to move on,”

With last month’s electoral loss for the Republican Party, President Barack Obama is one step closer to fulfilling an 80-year vision for the United States first put in place by former President Franklin Roosevelt, Mark Steyn said Tuesday. President Obama will deliver a speech today in which he will personally pitch for unilateral authority to raise the national debt ceiling. Reuters reports that the president wants the ability to raise the nation’s credit card limit by himself, without the “drama” of having to consult the people’s representatives in Congress. The president is embarked on an aggressive campaign to pressure congressional Republicans to compromise on steps to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. He will argue to corporate executives that it would hurt the nation’s economy to have another protracted political fight over raising the debt
