Washington--The Supreme Court on Monday remained silent about whether it will enter the legal fray over same-sex marriage and agree to hear one of several pending appeals on the issue. The court´s nine justices met in private on Friday to consider whether to review challenges to the U.S. Defense of Marriage Act, which denies federal benefits to married same-sex couples, and to California´s gay marriage ban, known as Proposition 8. n an "orders list" issued early on Monday, the court made no mention of any of the same-sex marriage cases. The court could reschedule those cases for further consideration

That is a 2 percentage point increase on every American, but it’s a, Republicans care about marginal rates, it’s a marginal increase on everyone making less than $100,000 a year. London--Britain summoned Israel´s ambassador on Monday over Israel´s decision to build thousands of new homes in occupied territory, calling it "deplorable" and saying it threatens a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Foreign Office said. It is the latest fallout after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu authorized planning to begin for the new housing units in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, a move widely viewed as retaliatory after the Palestinian Authority won a U.N. bid to be recognized as a "non-member observer state." Israeli Ambassador Daniel Taub has been formally summoned by Minister for the Middle East

Last week, at the post-election Harvard Institute of Politics conference, Republican campaign managers intensely took notes as Obama´s top campaign operatives explained some of the technology, data, and metrics the campaign employed to run circles around Mitt Romney´s operation. According to the liberal BuzzFeed, Republican campaign managers at the conference said things like, "We got our butts kicked, so I´m going to school," and, "We weren´t running in the same race." Republicans packed a room where Obama operatives such as strategist David Axelrod, campaign manager Jim Messina, and deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter, director of polling David Simas,

The U.S. Military Academy´s Cadet Chapel at West Point hosted its first same-sex marriage Saturday. Penelope Gnesin and Brenda Sue Fulton, a West Point graduate, exchanged vows in the regal church in a ceremony conducted by a senior Army chaplain. The ceremony comes a little more than a year after President Obama ended the military policy banning openly gay people from serving. The two have been together for 17 years. They had a civil commitment ceremony that didn´t carry any legal force in 1999 but had longed to formally tie the knot.

This week the House of Representatives made a positive move in reforming the US immigration process by passing the STEM Jobs Act sponsored by Lamar Smith (R-TX). This act does what our immigration policy should do: ensure a higher level of economic growth in the United States by encouraging the brightest and most talented students in the world to become permanent residents of the United States. It also reduces the wait for the families of the visa recipients to receive residency visas which is now at least two years.

Dozens of residents are still living without heat, hot water, or electricity in condemned structures flooded by both sea and sewer water in the Gerritsen Beach community of Brooklyn after a request to FEMA for temporary housing after Hurricane Sandy was denied. “We need structures and housing. It is truly desperate,” said Jameson Wells, executive assistant to the director of GB Cares Sandy Relief, a volunteer relief organization. FEMA has said they did not have appropriate trailers. “They told us they were unavailable because they are unheated and not insulated,” Wells said.

A firefighter has been sacked for putting toilet paper with Barack Obama´s face on it in the bathrooms of the fire station where he worked. Clint Pierce had previously been warned against posting politically inflammatory material in the workplace. And after the latest incident, he sparked a massive outcry in the town of Pompano Beach in south Florida, with some residents accusing Pierce of racism. The 50-year-old had worked for the local fire department for 19 years, during which time he had occasionally clashed with colleagues over politics. But his strong Republican views first appeared to

At least 16 U.S. cities, including Austin, Denver, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington D.C., have installed the lights, which feature a bicycle-shaped signal, according to an October study commissioned by the Oregon Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. They signals are common in Germany, Sweden and Australia, according to the study. The reason for the new signals?

President Obama will ask members of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to reelect Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Fla.) to serve another term as chairwoman. Obama will ask members of the committee to reelect Wasserman Schultz when the DNC meets in Washington on Jan. 22, one day after Obama is sworn in for his second term, according to a DNC official. The term for DNC chairwoman is usually four years, meaning she will helm the party through the 2014 midterms elections when Democrats will be trying to keep control of the Senate and win back the House.

Hillary Clinton is running for President. And the Israeli political class is a full-blown train wreck. These are two conclusions, for whatever they are worth, based on a three-day conference I attended this weekend at the annual Saban Forum, in Washington, D.C. A word about the scene: Haim Saban, an Israeli-American media and entertainment mogul, has for the past nine years been hosting a conference, sometimes in Jerusalem, more often in Washington, focussed on the Middle East. The attendees are mainly government officials, present and former; business people; institute-niks; a few reporters. There are very few Arabs;

Extra hands hired off the street are being sent into mold-infested, storm-damaged basements in public housing to clean with highly toxic chemicals but without proper equipment, gear or training, the Daily News has learned. The Housing Authority first asked its union partners to help with the cleaning — but union officials refused, citing the lack of training or protective clothing. So the city hired Belchor, an outside company, to do the work. The company would not comment, but a top official with the federal agency that oversees worker safety said workers were not properly suited up

DETROIT — After years of dismal sales, Ford’s Lincoln luxury brand is reintroducing itself with a new name and a new midsize sedan. The brand will now be known as the Lincoln Motor Co., a change intended to separate Lincoln from the cheaper Ford brand and give it a more exclusive feel. It’s also meant to recall Lincoln’s storied past, when sedans like the Continental and Town Car were the pinnacle of luxury and good design. Lincoln was known as the Lincoln Motor Co. until 1922, when founder Henry Leland sold the brand to Ford.
