“I believe the probability is we’re going over the cliff and I think that would be horrible,” President Clinton’s Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles said at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast meeting yesterday. “It would be insane to breach this fiscal cliff, yet I think there is only a one-third possibility we’ll actually get something done before December 31.” As gloomy as Bowles prediction sounds, it is, if anything, optimistic, if the latest reporting from Politico on the state of the negotiations between Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and President Obama is to be believed.

Sick children are being discharged from NHS hospitals to die at home or in hospices on controversial ‘death pathways’. Until now, end of life regime the Liverpool Care Pathway was thought to have involved only elderly and terminally-ill adults. But the Mail can reveal the practice of withdrawing food and fluid by tube is being used on young patients as well as severely disabled newborn babies. One doctor has admitted starving and dehydrating ten babies to death in the neonatal unit of one hospital alone. Writing in a leading medical journal, the physician revealed the process can take

Governor Mick Huckabee, now a TV and radio talk-show host, seems to be a nice guy. He is kind to everyone and seemingly wants everyone to like him. Unlike other media hosts, he regularly features as guests those with whom conservatives disagree. When The Iron Lady came out in 2011, Huckabee invited on actress Meryl Streep to discuss her performance of Margaret Thatcher. I recall her nervousness as she clearly feared being the guest of a well-known social conservative with whom she had profound disagreements. The governor quickly put her at ease,

Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) says, “corporations control the patterns of thinking” in the United States and that the Bill of Rights to the Constitution should be amended so that the government is given the power to restrict freedom of speech. "We need a constitutional amendment to allow the legislature to control the so-called free speech rights of corporations," said Johnson. “These corporations, along with the people they support, other millionaires who they’re putting into office, are stealing your government. They’re stealing the government and the U.S. Supreme Court

White House press secretary Jay Carney dodged questions about Ambassador Susan Rice and her husband’s investment in Canadian oil companies–including up to $600,000 in the company behind the Keystone XL pipeline, TransCanada–in a Thursday press briefing, oddly turning to the Benghazi issue in his response. “I would commend Republican opposition researchers for the intellectual bandwidth that is required to read a financial disclosure form,” Carney said of the issue, “because this was all documented in a financial disclosure form.” OnEarth, an environmental publication, first highlighted Rice’s investments Wednesday. The Washington Post reported on the investments Thursday,

Kirk in the original "Star Trek" television series is expected to see the iconic warship up close, the Daily Press is reporting. Headline split by staff.

In Washington there are two kinds of government expenditures. Those that are too small to sweat and those that are too large to do anything about. An example of something too large would be Medicare. In the too small category, there is Amtrak, which gets a billion or so in subsidies every year. In Washington, that is chump change. Not worth the trouble it would take to pry it from the clenched fingers of those who receive it. Still, some Republicans in Congress are making the effort.

WASHINGTON - Susan Rice´s attempts to ease the concerns of her Republican critics seemed to have little effect on Wednesday, as more U.S. senators - including a moderate one-time supporter - raised new questions about her despite two days of meetings at the Capitol. U.S. Senator Susan Collins met with the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations for over an hour(Snip) The moderate Republican even brought up a new concern, about Rice´s record in the State Department 14 years ago in connection with the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Africa.

A French appeals court has cleared US airline Continental of criminal blame for the July 2000 crash of a Concorde jet shortly after take-off from Paris. The ruling comes two years after another French court fined the airline and held it criminally responsible for the crash in which 113 people died. But Continental may still be liable for damages after the court said the firm still bore civil responsibility. A piece of metal from a Continental jet was blamed for causing the crash. But Continental labelled the initial court decision and its explanation absurd, and launched an appeal.

Appearing on CNN’s Early Start Thursday morning, Pastor Rick Warren told host John Berman that churches are “probably” responsible for some of the negative attitudes towards gays in America. Warren was on CNN to promote the latest version of his book, “A Purpose Driven Life,” a devotional Christian book. Warren took the opportunity to again underscore his opposition to same-sex couples, after appearing on Piers Morgan Tonight Tuesday and comparing being gay to taking arsenic and punching someone in the nose. Berman then asked Warren about the suicide of Rutgers student Tyler Clementi.

The odds of Susan Rice getting the nomination to replace Hillary Clinton may have just gotten longer, perhaps even longer than the proposed length of the Keystone XL pipeline project. That’s not an accidental analogy either, as the embattled UN Ambassador’s finances have begun attracting some interest. Rice’s wealth includes a substantial investment in TransCanada, the firm that wants to build the pipeline — and the next Secretary of State will make the official decision on whether it proceeds: Susan Rice, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations whose name has been

Where’s the love? For the Chevrolet Volt it’s right at home. The plug-in hybrid topped the Consumer Reports annual customer satisfaction survey for the second straight year, with 92 percent of owners saying they would definitely buy it again, down from 93 percent in 2011. The magazine says the showing was the result of a growing trend of enthusiasm for fuel-efficient cars, and in the case of the Volt, “the combination of sporty handling and strong engine performance also goes a long way in building loyalty and generating excitement among owners."

The GOP has a golden opportunity, if has the wit to grasp it. Mitt Romney was correct in bemoaning the reality that we have 47% of the population receiving a subsidy from the federal government, but he chose the wrong focus. Instead of framing the recipients as the problem (and be accused of insensitivity or worse), we must focus on the people who work themselves hard in order to make ends meet

Beirut - Syrian rebels battled forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad just outside Damascus on Thursday, restricting access to its international airport, and the Dubai-based Emirates airline and EgyptAir stopped flights to the Syrian capital. A rebel fighter who identified himself as Abu Omar, a member of the Jund Allah brigade, told Reuters that insurgents fired mortars at the airport´s runways and were blocking the road linking it with the capital. He said insurgents were not inside the airport but were able to block access to and from it. Another source in a Damascus rebel unit said mortars

Speaking with Secure Freedom Radio host Frank Gaffney this week, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) alleged that the Obama administration has actively aided al Qaeda and follows the advice of the Muslim Brotherhood. Gohmert told Gaffney that anti-Muslim investigations are necessary because President Barack Obama made “horrendous decisions” in backing the “revolutions in Northern Africa and across the Middle East and to the Far East.” He chalked such decisions up to the administration listening closely to the advice of Muslim Brotherhood members. A military judge on Thursday accepted the terms under which the young Army private charged in one of the largest leaks of classified material in U.S. history would plead guilty to lesser charges, a move that raises questions about whether the government will proceed with its most serious charges. Under the terms, Pfc. Bradley Manning would accept responsibility for providing classified materials to the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks. The offenses he is willing to plead guilty to carry a maximum term of 16 years in prison. The decision by the judge, Col. Denise R. Lind, does not mean the plea

If Susan E. Rice becomes Secretary of State, she might have to recuse herself from one of the first and most controversial decisions she would face: the Keystone XL oil pipeline permit. The reason: Rice and her husband are major shareholders in the pipeline company as well as a variety of Canadian companies that are involved in exploiting the oil sands region of Alberta, which would feed the Keystone XL and benefit from a new outlet.

With pen and gavel, the U.N.’s International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague last week redrew the maritime map between Colombia and Nicaragua—doubling Nicaragua’s exclusive economic zone in the Caribbean Sea by 100,000 sq km (38,600 sq mi). But the ICJ may have doubled Nicaragua’s trouble as well, not just because Colombia heatedly rejects the ruling—this week Colombian warships defiantly continue to ply Nicaragua’s newly acquired maritime territory—but because the decision hands the small, impoverished Central American nation more water than it can likely swallow, creating potential new tensions in the pond of the Americas.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) slammed the door Thursday morning on Democratic demands to raise tax rates on families earning more than $250,000 per year. “We’re insisting on keeping tax rates where they are, first and foremost, to protect jobs and because we don’t think government needs the money in the first place,” McConnell said on the Senate floor. “The problem, as I’ve said, is that Washington spends too much. But if more revenue is the price that Democrats want to exact, then we should at least agree to do it in a way that doesn’t cost jobs

House Speaker John Boehner, clearly frustrated after a closed-door meeting with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, said President Obama´s money man offered no "specific" plan for averting the looming end-of-year fiscal crisis, adding: "This is not a game." "First, despite the claims that the president supports a balanced approach, Democrats have yet to get serious about real spending cuts," the Ohio Republican said. "And secondly, no substantive progress has been made in the talks between the White House and the House over the last two weeks." Obama dispatched Geithner and White House Legislative Director Rob Nabors to meet separately

We’ve heard different accounts and different timelines concerning the attack at Benghazi. What exactly happened? First, people must understand that the compound that was attacked was situated in a somewhat rural area and was not a consulate, but a rented villa, or a residential structure. The residence was the primary building, and what has been referred to as the annex was located about 1800 feet away as the crow flies, but just over a mile to travel by road. And again, visible security was not present as the compound was the headquarters for a covert operation.

Ludovic Mohammed Zahed is braced for controversy, maybe even worse. A gay Muslim and an expert on the Koran, Zahed plans to open Europe´s first gay-friendly mosque in Paris at the end of this month. He calls it a place of shelter as well as a place of worship. "We need to have a safe space for people who do not feel comfortable and at ease in normal mosques," Zahed told ABC News. "There are transgender people who fear aggression, women who do not want to wear head scarf or sit in the back of the mosque.
