LOS ANGELES — A group of US servicewomen is suing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta over the Pentagon´s long-standing policy barring women from thousands of ground combat positions, they announced Tuesday. Four female soldiers, including two who won Purple Hearts for bravery in action in Afghanistan, slammed the policy as an "injustice to the women ... who continue to put their lives on the line for their country." "Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to be an Air Force pilot, and I have proven my ability every step of the way," said Major Mary Jennings Hegar

When you work in the tech world, your days are usually full of creative people doing incredible things; on the darker days, you occasionally stumble on people (or governments) using technology in ways that make your skin crawl. This week’s example? Saudi Arabia is sending a text message to the guardian—usually a husband, father, or brother—of any woman who attempts to exit the country.

After the election, conservatives are still full of foreboding -- and also a pessimistic hope. Want to know how to spell "default"? asks Holman W. Jenkins, Jr. It goes like this: "entitlement reform." Or this from Randall DeSoto: it takes about ten years for Americans to get it together and form a political movement for change. As in 1765 to 1776, 1850 to 1860, and so on.(Snip) But now liberals think the weather is set fair, what with the black and the Hispanic vote, ObamaCare, and beneficial financial and environmental regulations about to transform America.

Were the average Republican asked for a succinct statement of his views on taxation, he or she might respond thus: "U.S. tax rates are too high for the world we must compete in. The tax burden — federal, state, local, together — is too heavy. We need to cut tax rates to free up our private and productive sector and pull this economy out of the ditch." This core conviction holds the party together. Yet today the leadership is about to abandon this conviction to sign on to higher tax rates or revenues, while the economy is nearing stall speed. Yet, two years ago, President Obama himself extended the Bush tax cuts

Beijing - The online version of China´s Communist Party newspaper has hailed a report by The Onion naming North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un as the "Sexiest Man Alive" -- not realizing it is satire. The People´s Daily on Tuesday ran a 55-page photo spread on its website in a tribute to the round-faced leader, under the headline "North Korea´s top leader named The Onion´s Sexiest Man Alive for 2012." If you want to understand why President Obama was reelected despite a largely unsuccessful presidency and almost unprecedentedly high and continuous unemployment, just look at the Cuban-American vote. (Snip) Democratic presidential nominees went from 25 percent of the Cuban-American vote in 2000, to 29 percent in 2004, to 35 percent in 2008, to 48 percent in 2012. We obviously have a dramatic trend here. Now, why would that be? There are two reasons: No experience of evil, and American education. The first generation of Cuban-Americans had escaped Communist evil.

Kelly Ayotte, of New Hampshire, and John McCain, the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Just let a record Powerball Jackpot come around and it awakens a desire in most of us. We even begin to figure out how we will spend the money before we even buy the winning ticket. The question you ask is: Is all that money worth the one in 175,223,510 odds that you might actually pick the right numbers, or will you simply be out $2? The chances of winning $4 on Powerball are one in 55, so the chance is believable your original investment of $2 will net you $4. Gary Fowlie, of Village Variety in Camden, said this has been the best lotto sales he's seen in four to five years.

The NHS can’t go on like this. Patients today--baby boomers, especially--bother the doctor with minor complaints when their grandparents would have grinned and borne it, and have unrealistic expectations of what the health service can provide. The judge, María Lourdes Afiuni, was imprisoned in December 2009 after one of her rulings angered President Hugo Chávez. Human rights activists say her jailing was arbitrary and shows the lack of judicial independence in Venezuela.

On the long Thanksgiving weekend, five regular starting NFL quarterbacks of at least partial African descent took the field for their respective teams. Beyond their obvious talent, all five share a common background, one that is now rare in the African American community and becoming anomalous in American society writ large: each grew up in a Christian home with a mother and a father. More so than foot speed or even arm strength, this is the variable that elevates them above their peers.

In another one of his insightful essays, Michael Barone notes the obvious post-election status quo of divided government in Washington -- Republican House, Democrat Senate and White House. But at the state level, Americans across the country are clearly opting for more one-party rule where the political rubber meets the local roads. No one ever accused American voters of consistency. By next month, Barone calculates, 25 states comprising 53% of the population will be under the political rule of Republicans in the governor´s office and controlling both houses of the legislature.
