If you want to understand why President Obama was reelected despite a largely unsuccessful presidency and almost unprecedentedly high and continuous unemployment, just look at the Cuban-American vote. (Snip) Democratic presidential nominees went from 25 percent of the Cuban-American vote in 2000, to 29 percent in 2004, to 35 percent in 2008, to 48 percent in 2012. We obviously have a dramatic trend here. Now, why would that be? There are two reasons: No experience of evil, and American education. The first generation of Cuban-Americans had escaped Communist evil.

Three Republican senators who met Tuesday with U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice say they left the meeting with more unanswered questions about her comments after the deadly September 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. “I am more disturbed now than before,” said South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham. The Capitol Hill meeting lasted about 90 minutes and also was attended by acting CIA Director Michael Morell. Graham was joined by Sens. Kelly Ayotte, of New Hampshire, and John McCain, the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

John McCain and other Republican senators said Tuesday they would oppose elevating Susan Rice to Secretary of State until she and other officials answer more questions about the Sept. 11 attack in Libya. "We are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got and some that we didn´t get," McCain said after meeting with the United Nations ambassador who could be President Obama´s next nominee for the State Department. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., who also attended the meeting, said of Rice: "I would hold her nomination until I had additional answers to questions"

Just let a record Powerball Jackpot come around and it awakens a desire in most of us. We even begin to figure out how we will spend the money before we even buy the winning ticket. The question you ask is: Is all that money worth the one in 175,223,510 odds that you might actually pick the right numbers, or will you simply be out $2? The chances of winning $4 on Powerball are one in 55, so the chance is believable your original investment of $2 will net you $4. Gary Fowlie, of Village Variety in Camden, said this has been the best lotto sales he's seen in four to five years.

An Israeli military official is under fire for a Facebook photo in which he has dark mud smeared on his face with the caption "Obama style." From ABC News: "Sacha Dratwa posted the photo in late September, but since the furor he has restricted access to his account. (Snip) "In the photo, Dratwa appears to be smeared in mud from the Dead Sea, a popular activity for many visiting and living in Israel. Dratwa responded to a user on Twitter accusing him of racism saying, ´I´m not a racist, please stop [spreading] lies about me.'

Marie Antoinette’s advice to the poor was “let them eat cake.” Oprah Winfrey’s response to world recession has been to release her own line of organic food. According to Forbes, she has filed for trademarking “Oprah’s Organics”, “Oprah’s Harvest” and “Oprah’s farm.” Oprah’s products include salad dressing, frozen vegetables, massage oils, skin care products and hair sprays--a little bit of luxury for her millions of devoted followers.[Snip]The rest of the country will have to eat and wash their hair with things that don’t have a famous person’s name randomly stamped on them

Army Pfc. Bradley Manning is due back at Fort Meade this week, where lawyers for the alleged WikiLeaker plan to argue that he was punished at a military brig before his case had been heard — grounds, they say, to dismiss all charges against him. (Snip) Manning, 24, is the only suspect arrested in the largest leak in U.S. history. He is accused of sending raw field reports from Iraq and Afghanistan, diplomatic cables from U.S. embassies around the world and a video of a U.S. helicopter attack in Baghdad to be published by WikiLeaks. If convicted, he could be sentenced to life in prison.

The NHS can’t go on like this. Patients today--baby boomers, especially--bother the doctor with minor complaints when their grandparents would have grinned and borne it, and have unrealistic expectations of what the health service can provide. The system is at breaking point. The solution? We are going to have to start paying for some medical services at the point of delivery.[Snip]“It probably can limp on for the rest of this decade,” warns Dr Lee, “ but the reality is the pressures coming from the baby boomer generation and their expectations of health care, their perceptions of pain and suffering

CARACAS, Venezuela — An arrested judge at the center of one of Venezuela’s most prominent human rights cases was raped while in prison and then had an abortion behind bars after becoming pregnant, according to the judge’s lawyer and a book published last week in Caracas that has stirred new controversy around the case. The judge, María Lourdes Afiuni, was imprisoned in December 2009 after one of her rulings angered President Hugo Chávez. Human rights activists say her jailing was arbitrary and shows the lack of judicial independence in Venezuela.

As the Secretary of State is expected to soon announce her departure from the Obama administration, she has spoken in a surprisingly candid manner about the importance of her Christian faith on her career in public service. Hillary Clinton, who was raised in the United Methodist Church, once said her heritage instilled in her the ´obligation´ to relieve suffering but now the 65-year-old has gone even further, calling her faith ´fundamental´ to her identity. The personal statement by the former first lady turned senator turned cabinet member comes amid the unending speculation that she has her eye

The painting by Michael D’Antuono is part of a larger exhibit called “Artists on the Stump – the Road to the White House 2012.” It’s on display at the Bunker Hill Community College Art Gallery until Dec. 15th. The painting is called “Truth” – and shows the president with his arms outstretched. A crown of thorns rests on his head. It was originally supposed to debut nearly four years ago at New York City’s Union Square. But that event was cancelled due to public outrage. Content added by staff

Egyptians continued demonstrations Tuesday in Cairo´s Tahrir Square to protest Morsi´s decision to assume judicial authority. His office said the move was temporary and made in an effort to facilitate constitutional developments. On the long Thanksgiving weekend, five regular starting NFL quarterbacks of at least partial African descent took the field for their respective teams. Beyond their obvious talent, all five share a common background, one that is now rare in the African American community and becoming anomalous in American society writ large: each grew up in a Christian home with a mother and a father. More so than foot speed or even arm strength, this is the variable that elevates them above their peers.

In another one of his insightful essays, Michael Barone notes the obvious post-election status quo of divided government in Washington -- Republican House, Democrat Senate and White House. But at the state level, Americans across the country are clearly opting for more one-party rule where the political rubber meets the local roads. No one ever accused American voters of consistency. By next month, Barone calculates, 25 states comprising 53% of the population will be under the political rule of Republicans in the governor´s office and controlling both houses of the legislature.

Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) on Tuesday said he was sticking with conservative activist Grover Norquist’s anti-tax pledge during the upcoming deficit-reduction talks. “I don’t intend to violate any pledge,” said Toomey during an interview on CNN’s “Starting Point.” “My pledge is not to support higher taxes, what we are faced with in just a few weeks is a massive tax increase,” he added. “If I can help insure we don’t have that tax increase, then I believe I’ve fulfilled my pledge to fight for the lowest possible taxes.”

Senate Budget Committee ranking member Rep. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) on Monday afternoon accused President Obama of not believing in the need to control federal spending, even though Obama signed legislation last year that requires spending reductions over the next 10 years. Sessions was discussing the Sportsmen´s Act, which would require $14 million in new federal spending, and thus, Sessions says, would violate the spending levels set in the Budget Control Act (BCA). Sessions will force a vote later Monday on whether to waive the BCA and allow the bill to be passed, but said he regrets that the president

In Washington, Americans have two-party government, with a Democratic president and Senate and a Republican House. We had it before November´s election and will have it again for the next two years. Looking back from 2014, we will have had two-party government for most of the preceding two decades, for six years of Bill Clinton´s presidency, three and a half years of George W. Bush´s and four years of Barack Obama´s. But in most of the 50 states, American voters seem to have opted for something very much like one-party government.

The ongoing and not-so-gradual loss of American Civilization is the result of two related phenomena: the invasion of our country from the southern border, and our elites´ culture of self-loathing that oozed out of the noxious slime of the 60´s. Western Europe is rapidly losing its own civilization for identical reasons (with invaders more poisonous than America´s, and its own reproductive decadence, thrown in to expedite the process). The first phenomenon -- the invasions -- wouldn´t be happening in either place had they not been preceded by the second

When cadet Roberto Becerra Jr. walked onstage to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2007, the entire ceremony ground to a halt as he, before a crowd of thousands, transformed into a goat. For this achievement, Mr. Becerra received a rousing ovation and was handed an envelope stuffed with cash. In a 210-year-old military academy bristling with traditions, "the goat" is a curious custom that one might not expect to find at a school better known for its selectivity and high standards. Yet every year, the last-ranking cadet

Here´s something serious to think about: The New York Times had a front-page story the other day revealing in the final weeks before the Nov. 6 election, President Obama ordered acceleration of the process "to develop explicit rules for the targeted killing of terrorists by unmanned drones." That was in case Republican Mitt Romney won. He would then inherit a full-blown written policy for targeted killings [Snip] But here´s what that story also means that´s much more disturbing than a standard political CYA story from anonymous sources.

Gov. Christie put any speculation about his future plans to rest Monday, announcing that he would run for a second term as governor next November. The 50-year-old Republican made the announcement while visiting police and fire crews at Port Monmouth, one of many Shore towns ravaged by Sandy last month, saying the storm cemented his decision. "The public needs to know that I´m in this for the long haul. That the person that led them through the initial crisis wants to be here to lead them through the rebuilding and restoration of our state," he said.

Private talks between President Obama and top congressional leaders in search of a deal to avoid the year-end “fiscal cliff” are accelerating, even as the White House announced a new public campaign Tuesday to ramp up pressure on Republicans to extend tax cuts for the middle class. Obama will engage in a full-fledged effort this week to force Republicans to agree to freeze tax rates for most Americans while allowing rates to rise on the wealthy, officials said. Events include a White House meeting with more than a dozen small business owners on Tuesday, another White House session Wednesday

Budget Policy: Republicans are being hounded mercilessly to abandon their no-tax pledge to get a deal on the fiscal cliff. So why aren´t Democrats facing any pressure to compromise on entitlement spending? Every Republican who happens to bump into a reporter these days is sure to be grilled on tax hikes. [snip] But while GOP leaders have been signaling a willingness to cut a deal — even if it means agreeing to some form of tax hike — Democrats are digging in against any meaningful changes to out-of-control entitlement programs.
