WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama´s fundraising advisers have urged the White House to accept corporate donations for his January 2013 inaugural celebration rather than rely exclusively on weary donors who underwrote his $1 billion re-election effort. People involved in his re-election campaign said White House staff and campaign advisers have been debating whether to accept corporate money to stage the events but haven´t made a final decision.(Snip) Four years ago Mr. Obama barred corporations from donating to his inauguration, a gesture meant to show that well-heeled interests wouldn´t have undue influence in his administration.

The family of Vincent and Debra Leggio has been tragically torn apart after the couple was killed on Thanksgiving day in a massive 140-car pileup along a busy Texas interstate. Debra Leggio, 60 and her husband, Vincent Leggio, 64, were killed when their 2007 Chevrolet SUV was struck by an 18-wheeler, according to authorities. The Leggios were grandparents and residents of Pearland, Texas, where Vincent worked as an electrician. The Leggio family is one of hundreds affected by the string of collisions Thursday that left trucks and family SUVs twisted atop one another and authorities rushing to pull survivors

When Allied soldiers and airmen were thrown into German prison camps during World War II, they entered a grim world. Armed guards in towers kept watch over the camps, which were encircled by electrified barbed-wire fences. The captives slept on hard, wooden bunks in drafty barracks, and often dropped substantial amounts of weight – some to the point of emaciation – because of the meager and unpalatable food options. About 1,120 soldiers died. Life there was tough, as “Guests of the Third Reich,” the current exhibit at the National World War II Museum, shows. But the desperate conditions forced the inmates

At The Atlantic´s website, a debate is under way over the college "hookup culture"--the prevalence of casual sex on campus--and whether it is good for women. It began with an argument in the affirmative, in the form of an excerpt in the magazine´s September issue from "The End of Men: And the Rise of Women" by the feminist author Hanna Rosin. "The hookup culture," Rosin writes, is "bound up with everything that´s fabulous about being a young woman in 2012--the freedom, the confidence, the knowledge that you can always depend on yourself."

Murfreesboro, TN - Two shoplifting suspects were so upset with how they were treated in one store, they called another location to complain. The store manager did a little investigative work of his own and was able to identify the criminals using social media. Whether they window shop or shovel out tons of cash, shoppers expect to be treated right and with good customer service. For two shoplifters in Murfreesboro, they expected that too when they called to complain after getting the sticky fingers and getting caught. GAZA CITY — A week of bombardment by Israel has pulverized government buildings and militant weapons stores, and left 161 Palestinians dead. But the Gaza Strip’s Hamas leadership has emerged stronger than ever, Palestinians in Gaza said Thursday. Hamas, along with the masked fighters of other Gaza militant groups, held boisterous victory rallies across the Gaza Strip on Thursday, the day after an Egypt-brokered cease-fire with Israel took effect. Amid parades of flags and political bombast, each of the strip’s militant factions hailed what they called a triumph for the Palestinian resistance and a

Why was there an Israel-Gaza war in the first place? Resistance to the occupation, say Hamas and many in the international media. What occupation? Seven years ago, in front of the world, Israel pulled out of Gaza. It dismantled every settlement, withdrew every soldier, evacuated every Jew, leaving nothing and no one behind. Except for the greenhouses in which the settlers had grown fruit and flowers for export. These were left intact to help Gaza’s economy — only to be trashed when the Palestinians took over. Israel then declared its border with Gaza to be an international

For Fourth Straight Year,
Obama´s Thanksgiving Message

Yet again, President Obama’s Thanksgiving message eschewed any direct reference to thanking God, making this the fourth straight year in which the President of the United States has ignored the central message of the holiday in favor of political grandstanding. This year, Obama’s central message was that now that he’s been re-elected, Americans should agree with all of his policies. His unity routine sounds strangely empty after a campaign in which he focused on dividing Americans: But most of all, it’s a time to give thanks for each other, and for the incredible bounty we enjoy.

KANDAHAR CITY, Afghanistan — Few of the soldiers here thought much about making history as they gathered for the first-ever Thanksgiving Day feast at the Kandahar governor’s provincial compound. Some 35 GIs and as many Afghans filed into the great dining hall as a mullah’s voice cracked over a nearby loudspeaker, calling the faithful to prayer at the Shrine of the Cloak. Believed to house a piece of the cloak of the Prophet Muhammad, the mosque is the holiest place in Afghanistan for Muslims. The governor’s residence, built in the shadow of the shrine, was the home

President Obama´s campaign feared no potential Republican challenger more than Jon Huntsman, the former Utah governor who dropped out of the race in late January, according to a top campaign official. Obama campaign manager Jim Messina revealed this week that Huntsman, who stepped down as Obama´s ambassador to China in April of 2011 in order to run for the Republican nomination, would have been the most ´difficult´ candidate for Obama to beat. ´I think we were honest about our concerns about Huntsman,´ Messina told Politico.

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. — The remains of a roller coaster that was knocked off a New Jersey amusement pier by Superstorm Sandy and left partly underwater in the Atlantic Ocean might be left there as a tourist attraction. Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers tells WNBC-TV in New York that officials have not made a decision on whether to tear down the coaster. But the mayor says he´s working with the Coast Guard to see if the coaster is stable enough to be left alone because he believes it would make "a great tourist attraction."

The Republican party gets a lot of flak every time its members make a comment that flies in the face of sound science, especially where the Bible is concerned. Marco Rubio caught some criticism this week after hedging on the big creation question in a GQ interview, where Rubio appeared to be walking a thin line between reassuring rational Republicans and pandering to the party’s religious base. But yesterday, Slate writer Daniel Engber highlighted a similar answer Barack Obama gave when he was running for president in 2008. Obama made the following comments about the Biblical story of

London - Roche has offered an olive branch to scientific critics in a bid to end a bitter fight over blockbuster flu drug Tamiflu that has led to calls for a boycott of the Swiss drugmaker´s products. Tamiflu has been approved by regulators worldwide and stockpiled by many governments in case of a global outbreak - but some researchers claim there is little evidence it works and have lobbied since 2009 for Roche to hand over all its data from clinical trials. Sales of the drug hit close to $3 billion in 2009, due to the H1N1 swine flu pandemic, although they have since declined.

Pope Benedict XVI has revealed in the third installment of his trilogy, dedicated to the life of Christ, that Jesus may have been born earlier than previously thought. The calendar we use today, which commences with the birth of Christ and was created by a Dionysius Exiguus, a sixth century monk, may be mistaken. According to the Telegraph, the Pope explains in his book that Exiguus, who is considered the inventor of the Christian calendar, “made a mistake in his calculations by several years. The actual date of Jesus’ birth was several years before.” The suggestion that Jesus wasn’t actually born

If you’ve been following the David Petraeus-Paula Broadwell story, you may have seen this shirt: black and silky and flouncy and very, very arm-baring. Also shoulder-baring. Not what your mother would advise you to wear on national television. Not what my mother would advise, anyway. Even if the national television is “The Daily Show” and you have a push-up contest planned with Jon Stewart. Why am I bringing this up, again? The year was 1939, and American businesses, still reeling from the previous year’s recession, decided they wanted an extra week of Christmas shopping. The solution? They asked President Roosevelt to move Thanksgiving up a week. Roosevelt complied — and confusion and outrage ensued. Calendar makers were enraged, families ended up celebrating on different days from one another, and some accused the president of embracing communism. Within three years, Congress had had enough and passed legislation officially setting Thanksgiving as the fourth Thursday of November.
