After election euphoria, liberals
begin to worry about the
political fights to come

Just two weeks ago, liberals rejoiced over their strongest election showing in decades — re-electing Barack Obama, picking up seats in Congress and scoring historic state ballot victories that legalized same-sex marriage and recreational marijuana. But now much of the political left is worried that what seems like a liberal “morning in America” could turn out to be a false dawn. The focus of their distress is none other than Obama, who many left-leaning Democrats fear will go too far in reaching an accord with Republicans on the “fiscal cliff.” Liberal groups are gearing up media campaigns aimed at pressuring

The House will vote on a bill to give more green cards to highly-skilled immigrants who hold advanced degrees in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines from U.S. universities. The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Jobs Act, introduced by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), will be voted on in the House next Friday. The bill failed to pass the House in September with the two-thirds support it needed because it was voted on under suspension of the rules. The bill that will be considered next Friday will include a new provision

According to Michael D. Tanner of the CATO Institute, America isn’t just headed for a fiscal cliff – we flew off it long ago like Thelma and Louise thanks to our out-of-control spending habit. Tanner writes: “federal spending is set to rise to 46 percent of GDP by 2050. When you add in state and local spending, government at all levels will be consuming more than 60 percent of everything produced in this country. We cannot long remain economically productive or personally free with a government of that size.” That vast spending increase makes every “fiscally responsible” suggestion by President

President Barack Obama pressured Israel’s prime minister to adopt a cease-fire agreement with Hamas that was pushed by Hamas’ Egyptian ally, according to a White House statement released on Wednesday. Obama “commended [Israel’s] Prime Minister for agreeing to the Egyptian ceasefire proposal – which the President recommended the Prime Minster do,” said the 12.31 a.m. EST statement from the White House. The cease-fire terms released by Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi’s office do not mention any binding curbs on its ally Hamas, nor any guarantees that would prevent another wave of

As Kansas Sen. Jerry Moran takes the reins of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which is dedicated to electing a Republican Senate, Republicans are reflecting on what went wrong in the 2012 elections. In the wake of some missed opportunities to pick up seats in the U.S. Senate over the last few cycles, one tactical change floated by the GOP establishment is that the party apparatus and its affiliated Super PACs should play a more influential role in primaries to make sure that more “electable” candidates are nominated.

The mortified father of a Plymouth woman under cyber assault for posting a photo of herself flipping the bird at sacred Arlington National Cemetery said his only daughter apologizes to anyone she’s offended — especially soldiers. The controversial Facebook photo shows Lindsey Stone with her mouth wide open and giving the finger near what appears to be the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and a sign that reads: “Silence and Respect.” “She’s totally apologetic. She apologizes to anybody she’s offended,” her father, Peter Stone, told me last night.

An estimated 43 million Americans are travelling on Thanksgiving eve, amid bad weather and transport union action. Fog in Chicago has grounded 200 flights, while heavy rainfall has drenched the US Pacific Northwest. Airport union workers were meanwhile planning a protest near Los Angeles´ main airport. Thanksgiving, which celebrates the Pilgrims´ first harvest in what is now the state of Massachusetts, is one of the most popular US holidays. For the 39 million Americans travelling in vehicles, heavy traffic was expected in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. But there was some good

Prosecutors and investigators in the murder case against Casey Anthony admitted they overlooked a smoking gun that could spelled doom for the acquitted tot mom, according to broadcast reports last night. Someone inside the Anthony family home used the house computer -- with Casey Anthony’s password -- to Google search for "fool-proof suffication” on June 16, 2008, independent investigators told WKMG-TV in Orlando. Google automatically corrected the misspelled “suffication” and linked pages describing ways to die by poisoning and suffocation.

Over at the Huffington Post, media reporter Michael Calderone reports that MSNBC President Phil Griffin seeks to combat the network’s growing reputation as not just being “progressive,” but being openly “pro-Obama.” Many believe the network’s “pro-Obama” reputation has, thus far, been warranted: A recent Pew study found that during the final week of the 2012 election campaign, MSNBC ran zero negative stories about President Obama; and not a single positive story about Republican challenger Mitt Romney. Comedians have also taken to mocking the network for what seems to be an

If you told someone you expected a tiny company with virtually no assets and income to go from being worth pennies per share to having a market value of more than $2 billion, they’d probably think you were drunk or high. That kind of fantastic story is the stuff of spam e-mails sent by pump-and-dump scammers, or the realm of tiny newsletters — sometimes in cahoots with stock touts — where seemingly every penny stock is a rocket ship ready to launch. But it’s also precisely what happened last week with Medbox Inc., a company that makes medical-marijuana dispensing machines,

Walters went to the State House in Trenton on Tuesday to interview the governor and his wife, Mary Pat, for the 90-minute ABC special, to air Dec. 12. The news that Christie made Walters´ cut came on the same day the New York Times reported he has been busy trying to heal a rift

This week’s flare-up between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has rekindled the discussion about Israel’s 2005 withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. But amid all the debate over the wisdom of that withdrawal, one point seems to have been lost. The administration of George W. Bush put in writing its full support of Israel’s right to security and defensible borders as the disengagement approached. Though the Obama administration pointedly rejected the notion that it was bound by that agreement, the Gaza withdrawal was yet another item of proof that Israeli leaders are willing to make sacrifices

Today, the White House officially refused to release photos of US officials during the September 11 terrorist attacks on our consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that ended with the deaths of four Americans. CBS News requested the photos on October 31; the White House has routinely released photos showing members of the Obama administration in their hero poses during national security crises. That happened most famously with pictures of the Obama administration key players clustered into the White House situation room during the raid on Osama Bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan.

Benghazi, Libya - After more than two months, Libya´s investigation into the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi appears in limbo. Key security commanders and witnesses say they were never questioned. No suspects have been named, and gunmen seen participating in the assault walk freely in the eastern Libyan city. Hanging over the probe is a fear of reprisals from extremist militiamen. Farag al-Fazani, a young commander of a Libyan security force commissioned to protect the U.S. post at the time of the Sept. 11 attack, says he sees militants he recognizes from that chaotic night.

A letter to NATO included the "formal request" that the alliance send "air defense elements," according to a Turkish government statement that cited "the threats and risks posed by the continuing crisis in Syria to our national security." The statement added that the NATO Council would convene "shortly" to consider the matter. NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in a Twitter post that the request would be considered without delay.

Tampa — Danny Crane bragged that he was the "most decorated veteran in Florida." He claimed he had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, two Purple Hearts, an Air Medal and other war-related awards. He said he was injured fighting in Iraq, he was shot six times, lost vision in his right eye, had 24 plates in his face and broke all his ribs. He told people he did tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. And he told Veterans Affairs he had post-traumatic stress disorder. None of this was true. In fact, Crane was discharged from the Army after serving less than three months, and he never fought in a war.
