Jefferson City - Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich is planning to review the Department of Social Services’ administration of two assistance programs. Schweich says the audit will focus on Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and the Electronic Benefit Transfer process, which is used to access food stamps. The audit has been added to the 2013 schedule for Schweich’s office. Schweich pointed to recent reports of benefits being accessed from casinos, gentlemen’s clubs and locations around the world. He says the assistance programs are not intended to finance recipients’ entertainment

Although America carried President Obama confidently into a second term last Tuesday - not everyone is jumping for joy at the prospect of four more years. Tens of thousands have put their names to secession petitions in 20 states, asking that they peacefully become independent from the rest of the country. The documents have been lodged on a government website We The People - and Texas has almost enough people behind its petition to warrant an official White House response. Along with the Lone Star state, petitions were filed from Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky,

It is official. The US will overtake Saudi Arabia to become the world´s top oil producer by 2017. The International Energy Agency (IEA) said in its world outlook for 2012 this morning that the US will be a net exporter of gas by 2020, with all the vast implications of abundant cheap gas for its chemical, plastics, glass, and steel industries. "The United States, which currently imports around 20 per cent of its total energy needs, becomes all but self-sufficient in net terms – a dramatic reversal of the trend seen in most other energy importing countries," it said.

As they say in politics, timing is everything, and the shock resignation of David Petraeus as CIA director raises serious questions about whether this was genuinely a resignation caused by his affair with his biographer, or whether it was a hatchet job by Barack Obama´s administration to prevent him giving evidence this Thursday to the Senate Intelligence Committee. There is no doubt that General Petraeus made a monumental error of judgement by embarking on an affair with Paula Broadwell, the author of the recent hagiography of America´s most celebrated soldier of modern times, All In:

Washington - Your emails are not nearly as private as you think. The downfall of CIA Director David Petraeus demonstrates how easy it is for federal law enforcement agents to examine emails and computer records if they believe a crime was committed. With subpoenas and warrants, the FBI and other investigating agencies routinely gain access to electronic inboxes and information about email accounts offered by Google, Yahoo and other Internet providers. "The government can´t just wander through your emails just because they´d like to know what you´re thinking or doing," said Stewart Baker,

The 2012 election has made one thing perfectly clear. Americans who strongly identify themselves as individuals, who do not believe that it is better to, as Obama once put it, “spread the wealth around” through enforced government redistribution, and who believe our spending is out of control, are going to have to take matters into their own hands. It is no longer enough to plan for your future, to merely work towards your personal hopes and dreams. You must now start actively defending those hopes and dreams from 61,170,405 irresponsible people who think economic decline is a winning

When historians look back on Mitt Romney’s bid for the Presidency, one trend will be clear: no Republican candidate ever ran a similar campaign again. For four decades, from Richard Nixon to Ronald Reagan through the two Bush Presidencies, the Republican Party won the White House by amassing large margins among white voters. Nixon summoned the silent majority. Reagan cemented this bloc of voters, many of whom were former Democrats. Both Bushes won the Presidency by relying on broad support from Reagan Democrats. In that time, Republicans transformed the South from solidly Democratic to solidly Republican,

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo plans to ask the federal government for at least $30 billion in disaster aid to help New York City and other affected areas of the state recover from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, according to top administration officials. In making the case for federal aid, the governor’s advisers provided a staggering inventory of need as the city and state continued to rebuild in the storm’s deadly wake: $3.5 billion to repair the region’s bridges, tunnels and subway and commuter rail lines; $1.65 billion to rebuild homes and apartment buildings; $1 billion to reimburse local governments

Soul-searching is not in the GOP’s blood. Many Republicans see themselves as stoic, rugged and hardworking individuals. But after twice losing the White House to an ex-community organizer and failing to mobilize the base, Republicans need to take a trip to a mountainous valley, sip some tea and meditate. In the quiet of nature, I think Republicans would find that the solutions to winning lie within themselves. #1 Keep an open mind - Early on, talking heads like Ann Coulter disparaged Romney and endorsed other candidates. In February of 2011, Coulter said: "If we don't run Chris Christie,

President Obama will give the proposed Keystone XL oil sands pipeline a green light, Moody’s predicts in a new report. The fate of TransCanada Corp.’s proposed Alberta-to-Texas pipeline is shaping up as a major post-election battle. Environmentalists oppose Keystone and will stage a Nov. 18 demonstration at the White House, while a number business groups and unions want the State Department to permit the project. “We believe the White House will reverse course and approve the Keystone XL pipeline, which would ship crude from Canada’s western oil sands to the Gulf Coast,”

IRVING, Texas — Hostess Brands Inc. is permanently closing three bakeries following a nationwide strike by its bakers union. The Texas-based maker of Twinkies and Ding Dongs says the strike has prevented it from producing and delivering products. Hostess warned earlier this month that the strike, by about 30 percent of its workforce, could lead to bakery closures. It said Monday that it will close bakeries in Seattle, St. Louis and Cincinnati that collectively employ 627 workers. The company has about 18,300 employees. Obamacare’s coming. Love it or hate it, President Barack Obama’s re-election Tuesday cleared the last major hurdle toward implementing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Businesses are being forced to take a fast and hard look at how to handle the shift in health-care benefits and potential costs that are part of the law that goes fully into effect in 14 months. “This is here to stay,” said J.D. Piro, a senior vice president at Aon Hewitt who leads the company’s health law consulting group.

The man who voices Sesame Street´s popular character Elmo is denying he had gay sex with a minor, as Sesame Street honchos try to assure fans that the high-pitched puppet is "bigger than one man." (Snip) Clash admitted to TMZ he and the individual had sex, but only after he was above the age of consent. "I had a relationship with [the accuser]," Clash said. "It was between two consenting adults and I am deeply saddened that he is trying to make it into something it was not." The popular children´s show acknowledged the relationship and their involvement

Hiding an object from view isn´t just a trick for science fiction storytellers — researchers are getting closer to being able to hide a solid object from sight, new research suggests. Study researcher David Smith, from Duke University, and his graduate student, Nathan Landy, have created a structure that can guide electromagnetic waves around an object and have them converge on the other side. To an outside observer, these waves look like they passed right through the object.

The U.S. is set to increase oil production so much that it will overtake Saudi Arabia and become the world’s biggest producer by around 2017, the International Energy Agency said today. The reaction from “peak oil” theorists? Not a chance. They continue to argue that the surge in U.S. production coming from shale oil and shale gas is a flash in the pan. Before long, they say, U.S. output will start falling again—as will global output. The price of oil will skyrocket and the industrial economy will be brought to its knees, they argue.

The mystery woman who blew the lid off former CIA Director David Petraeus’ career-ending affair is also tied to the military — a sexy social liaison for an Air Force base in Tampa who says she and the ex-general are just “friends.” Jill Kelley, 37, a married mother of three from the Gulf Coast city, alerted the FBI several months ago after receiving emails from Petraeus’ alleged mistress, biographer Paula Broadwell, warning the stunning Tampa socialite to “stay away from” the spymaster, according to sources with knowledge of the messages.

Military law means that if CIA Director David Petraeus began his affair with biographer Paula Broadwell while he was serving in Afghanistan – while he was General David Petraeus – he can be prosecuted. Petraeus’ former aide, Peter Mansoor, acknowledged, “For him to allow the very first biography to be written about him, to be written by someone who had never written a book before, seemed very odd to me.” Under Article 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, it is still possible to prosecute members of the military who involve themselves in

Seeking to scare the public away from legalizing the stuff, the Obama administration notes that in 2009, marijuana was "involved in" 376,000 emergency-room visits nationwide. Be afraid, be very afraid: This represents less than 0.3 of 1 percent of all ER visits, and 3.3 million fewer visits than are caused annually by recreational sports. Figures such as those help explain why voters in Washington and Colorado were not frightened, and passed referenda decriminalizing pot. Oregon rejected a similar measure, just as California did two years ago. But the tide may be turning.

Florida Republican Rep. Allen West continues to challenge election officials´ tallies that show he has lost his re-election bid – amid wild ballot swings on Tuesday and a partial recount needed because of voting-machine problems. The Tea Party-backed West demanded a recount after the swing of votes on election night, leading Democratic challenger Patrick Murphy by roughly 2,000 votes, then trailing by 2,400 votes about 35 minutes later. Officials said Saturday a final tally in the state’s 18th Congressional District shows Murphy had won by enough votes to avoid a full recount

Chevron will make only small-scale pollution control improvements as it rebuilds the fire-damaged crude oil unit at its Richmond refinery - telling regulators it will not increase production, a decision that allows the company to avoid requirements for new emissions technology. After an Aug. 6 fire at the refinery produced a black cloud of smoke that sent 15,000 people to hospitals seeking treatment, the Richmond City Council and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District adopted resolutions urging Chevron to use the best pollution control technology available in rebuilding the plant. Chevron officials, however, told air-quality officials

In Washington, when the official line seems improbable, people often say, “It doesn’t pass the smell test.” There’s a lot that stinks at the moment about the Benghazigate affair, including now the circumstances involving the forced resignation of a man in the middle of it: President Obama’s CIA Director and former four-star Army General David Petraeus. Within hours of the jihadist attack in Libya on September 11 that killed four Americans, the administration started dissembling and lying about what happened. Gen. Petraeus could surely shed light on the matter.

The thousands of solar-powered New Jersey homeowners have spent the last week at the mercy of the power grid, just like everyone else. “I’ve been asked that all week long,” says Jeff Lega, whose home in Brick is covered in rooftop solar panels. “‘Why don’t you have power?’” Understanding the answer requires an understanding of how residential solar panels function. On a sunny day, rooftop panels can produce more electricity than is needed to power a home. But with no way to store it, the excess juice is sent back to the power grid for consumption elsewhere.

Rasmussen Reports, the prolific automated pollster whose projections fell far from the mark Tuesday, explains what went wrong: "Our final daily presidential tracking poll showed Romney at 49% and Obama at 48%. Instead, the president got 50% of the vote and Romney 48%. We were disappointed that our final results were not as close to the final result as they had been in preceding elections. There was a similar pattern in the state polls. For example, in Ohio we projected a tie at 49% but the president reached 50% of the vote and the challenger got just 48%.
