Hillary Clinton will step down as U.S. Secretary of State within 'days' of President Barack Obama's second inauguration in January, her spokesman said today. Her long-respected departure is expected by most Democrats to be a prelude for a White House run in 2016, when she will be 69. The top candidate to replace her is believed to be Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the losing 2004 Democratic presidential nominee. He is viewed as a more likely pick than Susan Rice, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, because of her widely-criticised appearance

The President's foreign policy over Afghanistan and Iran is unconvincing and promises trouble . Barack Obama believes America’s decade of war is coming to a close. If only it were that simple. For a country that still has a large proportion of its armed forces deployed overseas on combat missions, surprisingly little attention was paid during the election campaign to how Mr Obama intends to deal with various national security issues. There was a flicker of interest during the final television debate, when Mitt Romney pressed the President on his policies for preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, and defeating

The world needs powerful American leadership, the bedrock of which rest upon a sound economy, limited government and free enterprise, as well as a strong national defence. But it certainly won’t be provided by Obama’s imperial presidency. In his first term of office, an administration that worshipped bailouts and big government built up staggering levels of debt that threaten to saddle future generations with the profligate spending of their forefathers. Instead of hope, President Obama offered only the heavy fist of government intervention, rising taxes, increasing poverty and welfare dependency, and an increasingly bitter, angry and insular White House.

NEW YORK -- In the aftermath of the election, one thing that investors can count on is that President Obama wants more of their money. Judging from the initial market reaction -- with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down over 270 points to 12,973.37, the S&P 500 (SPX.X) down nearly 29 points to 1,399.70 and the NASDAQ Composite down nearly 67 points to 2,945.42 in afternoon trading -- investors are less than thrilled with the result. Financial names have been hit even harder, with the KBW Bank Index (I:BKX) dropping nearly 4% to 47.78 Wednesday afternoon.

The snowstorm that hit the area Wednesday was a first. Not the first winter storm, but the first to be christened with a name. The Weather Channel called it Athena. Used to be only hurricanes, or tropical storms, were given names. And it was that way for hundreds of years. (Snip) The National Weather Service posted on its website that “TWC has named the nor'easter ‘Athena.’ The NWS does not name winter storms in our products. Please refrain from using the term Athena in any of our products.” Brian Edwards, a meteorologist for Accuweather.com, said his agency has considered

Some Philadelphia neighborhoods outdid themselves in Tuesday's presidential election. In a city where President Obama received more than 85 percent of the votes, in some places he received almost every one. In 13 Philadelphia wards, Obama received 99 percent of the vote or more. Those wards, many with large African American populations, also swung heavily for Obama over John McCain in 2008. But the difficult economy seemed destined to dampen that enthusiasm four years later. Not to worry. Ward leaders and voters said they were just as motivated this time.

Hispanic activists are wasting no time pressuring President Obama to give them their due for flooding the polls for his reelection. Citing exit polls that show Obama received up to 71 percent of the Latino vote, Hispanic and pro-immigration reform groups are urging the president to move fast to use his election mandate to pressure foes into an immigration deal. "President Obama unquestionably owes this historic victory to 71% of the Latino vote," said the DRM Action Coalition which promotes the DREAM Act to provide children of undocumented workers special access to college.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) told reporters on Wednesday that the American people are not interested in the issues of same-sex marriage and abortion. A reporter asked Reid: “Do you have any plans to change the filibuster rule?” “Yes I do,” said Reid. “I’ve said so publicly and I continue to feel that way.” Reporter: “Can you talk about specifically what you want to do?” “I’m not going to talk specifically but you asked a question, I’m answering it,” said Reid. “Yes, I do. I think that the rules have been abused, and that

A number of factors are winning attention as important to President Obama’s reelection win, among them the Latino vote, a surge in young voters’ share of the electorate, and a surprise no-show by many white voters whom Republicans were counting on. Here’s one more teensy little thing that might be added to the list: the economy. A large majority of voters cited this as the top national issue, and the nation’s historically high unemployment rate was the big vulnerability that challenger Mitt Romney hoped to use as a lever to pry Mr. Obama out of office.

Police on the hunt for EBT fraud raided five Brockton stores today and busted eight people — including one store clerk caught with cash in hand — in what authorities said were long-running scams to cheat the state by trading food stamps for money and in some cases, using EBT cards to buy discounted groceries that they sold at marked-up prices. As part of a wide-ranging, six-month probe, undercover officers assigned to Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz’s office posed as customers at several Brockton stores, where they handed over EBT cards to store clerks

This city needs someone to lead us out of the dark. The longest, loneliest ride ever taken by Mayor Bloomberg came Monday, when Hizzoner, proving he’s down with the little people, boarded a packed subway train for the journey downtown to City Hall. But the goodwill gesture erupted into farce. Bloomberg was picked up at his East 79th Street town house by a Chevy Suburban and, bypassing the local No. 6 train, he settled into the No. 5 express at 59th, reading the Financial Times while surrounded by six bodyguards. When a Post reporter tried to ask

WASHINGTON -- Jimmy Carter is redeemed! The grinning dunce of yesteryear, who grew into the anile doddering figure of today lecturing the civilized on all manner of statecraft, has been replaced by the saturnine gaunt prophet, Barack Obama. His sorry performance these past four years he lays to the administration of George W. Bush. The next four years will be a replay of the last four years, and an even graver crisis will confront us then with the domestic economy in a funk and foreign potentates all laughing at us. The Prophet Obama has demonstrated that you can preside

First Sandy — now this! New York City and Long Island will institute gas rationing starting tomorrow to help ease the demand and long lines at gas stations across the area, WABC reported. Nassau and Suffolk Counties are expected to institute a gas rationing system similar to New Jersey's odd-even system. Earlier, Big Apple residents dug out from another weather nightmare today, after being hit with rain, sleet, snow and wind from a strong nor'easter that blew into town yesterday and overnight.

Thank you, America. Thank you for re-electing Barack Obama. Thank you for solidifying Obamacare. Thank you for ensuring that my health insurance rates will rise to the point where my employer drops my coverage. Thank you for future higher prescription drug prices, for lower quality care, for long lines to see my doctor, and for allowing a board of 15 people to determine my fate. Thank you, America. Thank you, America, for making sure our media will be taking a coffee break for the next four years instead of holding our elected officials accountable (unless they’re Republicans, of course).

A jittery U.S. senator-elect Elizabeth Warren gave one-sentence answers, ducked questions and even passed one on to Gov. Deval Patrick in an awkward first press conference since the election. Warren spoke for a total of less than four minutes during the 11-minute press conference — the rest was taken up by Patrick and reporters’ questions. After being asked her first question — how she’d protect defense spending — Warren was silent as she turned to Patrick. “Defense spending is you,” Patrick prodded Warren. “Oh, that’s mine,” Warren replied.

State Rep. Derrick Smith defended his re-election to the 10th District at a news conference this morning, chiding those who say he only received the votes because he’s a Democrat. He said that point of view is “misinformed and insulting to the people of the district that voted for me.” (Snip) In August, Smith became the first lawmaker tossed out of the Illinois House in more than 100 years, before he was re-elected on Tuesday in his West Side district. Skip the second helpings. It used to be just called Thanksgiving. Now the day is increasingly called Black Friday Eve or Black Thursday, as retailers double down on early opening hours for the kickoff of the holiday shopping season. This Thanksgiving, some retailers, including the world’s largest, are opening earlier than ever, before the dishes are even cleared from the table. “This is actually something we’ve seen really take off with consumers in recent years,” said Kathy Grannis, spokeswoman at the National Retail Federation. Last year, 24 percent of shoppers said they were at a store at midnight

Iran fired on an unarmed U.S. drone last week as it was hovering in international airspace, the Pentagon announced Thursday. Spokesman George Little said the incident occurred Nov. 1 at 4:50 a.m. ET. He said the unarmed, unmanned drone was conducting "routine surveillance" over the Persian Gulf when it was "intercepted" by Iran. He said the MQ1 Predator drone, which was not hit, was not in Iranian airspace. (Snip) Little stressed that the drone was flying 16 nautical miles off the coast of Kuwait in international waters, and never entered the 12-mile limit that would constitute Iranian territory.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will become the first U.S. president to visit Myanmar and Cambodia when he travels to the Asian nations later this month. The White House says Obama will also visit Thailand. The trip comes less than two weeks after Obama's re-election. Obama's trip to Myanmar marks the culmination of a dramatic turnaround in the country's relations with Washington. Myanmar, also known as Burma, has shifted from five decades of ruinous military rule and shaken off the pariah status it had earned through its bloody suppression of democracy. The president has suspended sanctions to reward

In his re-election victory speech on Tuesday night, President Barack Obama referred to the United States as a singular “former colony,” when the United States was actually composed of 13 separate colonies prior to gaining independence from the British. “Thank you so much. Tonight, more than 200 years after a former colony won the right to determine its own destiny, the task of perfecting our union moves forward,” said Obama, which was the first sentence of his remarks in Chicago, Ill. Before the United States won its independence from Great Britain with the Treaty of Paris in 1783,
