Classified United States military units are operating in the region near Libya since the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, according to the director of operations for the Pentagon’s Joint Staff. The disclosure that secret U.S. military forces were dispatched to Libya recently was revealed in a letter sent Wednesday to the House Armed Services Committee by Vice Adm. Kurt Tidd, director of operations for the Pentagon’s Joint Staff. Tidd said that after the attack in Benghazi, the U.S. European Command sent a Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team (FAST) platoon to reinforce security

If you want to understand why voters no longer trust pollsters, look no further than the latest CNN poll of Ohio voters, showing President Barack Obama with a 50%-47% lead over Gov. Mitt Romney--a result that is within the poll’s 3.5% margin of error, but which suggests a slight Obama lead. The internal numbers reveal that Romney is leading among independents by 2%, and winning Election Day voters by a staggering 13%. The lead for Obama is based entirely on the poll’s survey of those Ohioans who say they have voted early, or who are likely to vote early. The hard numbers behind early voting,

A business coordinator at a power company in western Georgia told The Daily Caller Friday afternoon that workers from his electric-utility employer were not permitted to help restore power to New York consumers because they would not join the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). The revelation comes on the heels of similar stories TheDC has reported about power crews from Alabama and Florida who volunteered to fix downed power lines after Hurricane Sandy left millions in the Northeastern United States in the dark this week. “We’re not a large utility, so we

Lima, Ohio - Speaking to reporters here Friday after a full day of passionate campaign speeches from President Barack Obama, senior adviser David Axelrod said that Obama's enthusiasm "is coming from his loins. "I've never seen him more exhilarated than he is right now. He believes in what he's doing. He believes in what he's fighting for. You can see in the speech that he's delivering that this is coming from his loins. I just wanted to say loins," Axelrod added with a smile. "I wanted to see if I can get loins in the story." The adviser also noted that he thinks "the thing that's most difficult

Patience wore thin over gas shortages, power failures and long lines for everything from buses to food handouts on Friday, as many parts of the New York City region struggled to recover from the devastation left by Hurricane Sandy. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg decided on Friday afternoon to cancel the New York City Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, amid a growing backlash from residents and local politicians angered at the intent of staging a race when many New Yorkers are still dealing with severe hardships. “While holding the race would not require diverting resources from the recovery effort

Tampa Bay, Florida - Local service members who have spent years serving the country are discovering this fall that they aren't allowed to vote in the presidential election. Valrico resident and Navy Captain Peter Kehrig, who has been abroad for five years tells 10 News he feels cheated by a system that removed him from the rolls. Florida State Law requires county supervisor of elections offices to perform regular "maintenance" on its voter rolls to eliminate voters who have been convicted of felonies, moved out of the county, or may have died. Election officials in the storm-battered Northeast say voting will go on next Tuesday -- but that relocated polling places, mobile polling trucks and even an extra day of voting are possible. (Snip) In New Jersey, where nearly half the state is without power after Superstorm Sandy's Monday blow, Gov. Chris Christie has said the last thing people are thinking about is how to vote. "We'll be ready for Election Day one way or the other, and people will have the opportunity to vote in the election, but we're just going to have to see where we are," Christie said Wednesday. The marathon will not take place in storm-ravaged New York City this Sunday, Mayor Bloomberg announced late Friday. Bloomberg had defended his decision to hold the 26.2-mile race as scheduled on Sunday, although many New Yorkers complained it would be insensitive and divert city resources at a time when many are suffering. Bloomberg earlier in the day said the marathon would "give people something to cheer about in what has been a very dismal week for a lot of people." But after growing criticism, the event was put off. "The marathon has always brought our city together and

Jimmy Green's stepdaughter had never voted before. The 57-year-old is mentally disabled, and Green said she doesn't understand the concept of casting a ballot. But this week, she called her parents to say she had voted for President Obama. The care home in Fayetteville where she lives registered its residents to vote and drove them to the polls, Green said. "My concern is that somebody told her who to vote for," he said. "She didn't even know there's two different parties." Complaints of uncomprehending voters being ferried to cast ballots surface every election. And in a presidential as close

Could Mitt Romney win Pennsylvania, a state that’s swung Democratic in every presidential election for the past 20 years? That question comes up because Romney himself is now scheduled to stop in Philadelphia for a rally on Sunday following a burst of GOP-funded Keystone State ads. At this point in a campaign a candidate’s time is a precious resource. Mr. Romney’s surprise visit to Pennsylvania thus suggests that his campaign sees an opening. Either that or they’re desperate, as Democrats charge. Right now President Obama maintains an edge in Pennsylvania polling.

Owning little more than he wore, Paul Paradiso lumbered forward on crutches into the cool dark training hall of the Gerrittsen Beach Fire Department to see if he could find some clothes. Doreen Garson, assistant chief of the Vollies, as the volunteer department is called, told him to look inside the big plastic bags heaped on a set of folding tables– there weren’t enough people available yet to sort clothes local residents had donated. Like nearly everyone living in Gerritsen Beach’s old section, Paradiso, 42, was wiped out Monday night by the rising floodwaters from Hurricane Sandy.

There may have been more talk about dogs at the U.S. Supreme Court than at the American Kennel Club Wednesday, as the justices heard arguments in two cases involving the state of Florida and drug-sniffing police dogs. Each dealt with the question of whether the use of drug-detecting canines to obtain probable cause for a subsequent search is itself an unreasonable search and a violation of the Fourth Amendment. (Snip) The claim did not sit well with Justice Anthony Kennedy, who branded it a "circular argument." "The argument we're having [is] about whether there is a reasonable

The world can be a scary place and, for many, cartoon villains and cheap explanations serve to account for its rough edges. “We have so many people,” noticed Ronald Reagan, ”who can’t see a fat man standing beside a thin one without coming to the conclusion the fat man got that way by taking advantage of the thin one.” So it goes with the weather and the climate, in which realms those who scoff derisively at the religious and abhor theodicy as the preserve of rubes and reactionaries are extraordinarily quick to share their own unlettered theories as to how and why we are afflicted by tragedy.

Washington - Forecasters say another messy — and wintry — storm may cause post-Election Day problems for an already weather weary East Coast. But meteorologists add that it's six days out, so that's rather early to get too worried. The forecast could change before it hits late next week. The National Weather Service's forecast center that watches winter storms put out a long-range notice Thursday, saying bluntly that a nor'easter is possible for the mid-Atlantic and New England. Forecaster Bruce Sullivan says it wouldn't be as bad as Superstorm Sandy and isn't tropical. But it could include

While thousands in New York and New Jersey struggled in the devastating aftermath of Sandy, some celebs couldn’t stop the party. Giuseppe Cipriani and son Ignazio threw a lavish bash at Cipriani 42nd Street on Wednesday night, as Halloween was canceled across the region and downtown Manhattan remained cloaked in darkness. Stars including Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Dita Von Teese, Jay-Z and Beyoncé joined the bash, which Cipriani reps say went on until well after 5 a.m. and was not for charity. As Iranians marked the 33rd anniversary of the seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, a commander of the powerful Revolutionary Guard on Friday offered a pot of gold to anyone who could prove that America is not "the most criminal regime on earth." Speaking to a crowd of thousands outside the building that once housed the embassy, Gen. Mohammad Reza Naqdi said 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of gold would be given to anyone who found a regime "more criminal than the United States."

Washington - The festering dispute between China and Japan over five uninhabited islands could spin out of control unless the countries improve their communication with each other, according to a confidential report submitted to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton this week by a delegation of former U.S. officials. The bipartisan four-person delegation met last week with Japan’s prime minister and China’s vice premier, who is expected to take over as prime minister, and both countries’ foreign ministers. The U.S. group warns Clinton in its written report that, while neither side wants a confrontation, a mistake or miscalculation could escalate into

Jerusalem - Israel may be openly hoping that Republican challenger Mitt Romney will end up stealing the presidency from Barack Obama, but for the Palestinians it makes little difference who takes over the White House. With the US presidential race drawing to a close, Israelis have come out strongly in favour of the Republican nominee who they believe is likely to be a better friend to the Jewish state than President Obama. Figures published in a Peace Index poll showed a clear majority of Jewish Israelis – 57% - believe that when it comes to Israel's interests, Romney would be

Vice President Joe Biden hit the late-night comedy scene Thursday night by reading his “Top 10″ list of reasons to vote early on the “Late Show with David Letterman,” pushing voters to head to the polls ahead of Election Day. “Honestly, don’t you want this election over with already?” Biden said as his number one reason to vote early. Throughout their campaign stops in October, Biden and President Obama encouraged supporters to head to the voting booths early to help them win some of the key battleground states.
