Schumer: “I know what you’re going through, sweetheart.” NY Daily News: Staten Island has been the scene of some of the most heartbreaking storm-related devastation, especially on the South Shore where numerous trapped residents had to be rescued. Hundreds of homes — from multimillion-dollar mansions to modest bungalows — have been damaged and dozens of streets are impassable due to downed trees and buckled roads. As such, federal and local officials heard an earful from residents Thursday. “Please don’t leave us,” a weeping Donna Solli pleaded to Sen. Chuck Schumer in front of her damaged

After being denied a campaign “rally” at Regis University in Denver, the Obama campaign settled for a “dialogue” with a co-chair of a group that calls itself “Catholics for Obama.” According to Catholic News Agency, about 45 people attended the dialogue on October 25th, the topic of which was “Catholic Social Teaching: The Intersection of Faith and Politics.” (Snip) Nicholas P. Cafardi, Catholics for Obama national co-chair and a law professor and dean emeritus of Duquesne University School of Law, helped develop the dialogue, along with another co-chair of the group, Victoria Kovari, and Broderick Johnson, a senior adviser to

Vice President Joe Biden hit the late-night comedy scene Thursday night by reading his “Top 10″ list of reasons to vote early on the “Late Show with David Letterman,” pushing voters to head to the polls ahead of Election Day. “Honestly, don’t you want this election over with already?” Biden said as his number one reason to vote early. Throughout their campaign stops in October, Biden and President Obama encouraged supporters to head to the voting booths early to help them win some of the key battleground states. Immediately after Biden stepped off the stage in Ocala, Fla.,

Columbus, Ohio - International observers may be in the United States on Election Day, but they will not be inside Ohio polling places, and the organization says it will honor state law. Earlier this week, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted announced that international observers, affiliated with the United Nations, would not be allowed in Ohio polling centers, citing state laws that limit who is present in polling places on Election Day. Travelers have started to check out of the hotels where they've been stranded as a result of superstorm Sandy. But the rooms will be quickly occupied. New Yorkers without power, heat and water are anxious to check in. There are 500,000 New Yorkers without power, Mayor Bloomberg said Thursday afternoon. (Snip) Hotel Tonight, the same-day hotel booking app, showed two available hotels in all of Manhattan Thursday: the St. Giles for $695 a night and the Indigo for $495.

You've all seen the video. A Staten Island resident pleading desperately for help and assistance. "We are gonna die here!" she screams, seemingly to a pool of TV cameras. This is the image CBS, MSNBC, and other news outlets showed you of Donna Solli begging for assistance: What you don't see, what the media didn't show you, was who she was really talking to. She wasn't desperately begging the TV stations for help. She wasn't begging a faceless bureaucrat from FEMA for help. Take a look who she was pleading with and complaining to for the lack of efficient delivery

New York – As the fight for fuel continues at the few stations still open across the Tri-State area, officials said Friday that they are working to get gas where it’s needed. Speaking at a news conference Friday morning, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo acknowledged that there is a shortage of fuel, but said “there is no reason to panic.” “The issue of gasoline has created concern and anxiety and practical problems all throughout the region. People can’t get gas, there’s a slow down of the delivery of services, it’s increased the stress level all across the region,” Cuomo said.

While the NYC Marathon is still on for this Sunday, many (including runners who planned on participating) are hoping the city will cancel or postpone in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. But the city is moving full speed ahead. As we noted earlier, those urging the city to halt the run believe that the thousands of Marathon volunteers could direct their efforts towards post-Sandy relief and cleanup, (Snip) Considering all the volunteer help and NYPD attention that's already being diverted to the Marathon, the added sight of generators and food being channeled to the event is probably going to strike

PHILADELPHIA — First there was quiet. Then came the “super PACs.” Now the candidate is on his way. In a striking last-minute shift, the Romney campaign has decided to invest its most precious resource — the candidate’s time — in a serious play to win Pennsylvania. Mr. Romney’s appearance here on Sunday could be a crafty political move to seriously undercut President Obama, or it could be a sign of desperation. Either way, his visit represents the biggest jolt yet in a state that was until recently largely ignored in the race for the White House. Headline resplit by staff.

Beirut - A new video appears to show Syrian rebels killing a group of captured soldiers, spraying them with bullets as they lay on the ground. Human rights groups on Friday warned that the gunmen may have committed a war crime. The video raises concerns over brutality among some rebels just ahead of a major conference this weekend in Qatar at which the United States is trying to unify the opposition under a new leadership. Washington and its allies have been hesitant to give stronger support to the rebellion in part because of worries over its multiple divisions and lack

Cairo, Egypt - Republican challenger Mitt Romney has accused US President Barack Obama of letting Egypt, a once stalwart friend, slip away. All politics aside, it is true that Egypt is no longer the unflinching ally it once was. Shaken by a popular uprising that ousted US-friendly dictator Hosni Mubarak and brought Islamists to power, the decades-long partnership between the two countries is significantly different from when US President Barack Obama took office. This new relationship was on display last month when the government of President Mohamed Morsi was slow to respond to an assault on the US Embassy in

Senior Israeli defense official Amos Gilad came out against the Muslim Brotherhood leadership in Egypt on Friday, describing it as a "terrible dictatorship," and saying President Mohammed Morsi's regime "won't talk" to Israel. Speaking to students at an event in the Israeli city of Herzliya, Gilad said that "out of a desire for democracy, a terrible dictatorship has arisen" in Egypt, where the Muslim Brotherhood came to power after elections earlier this year. He stressed, however, that Israel must "safeguard the peace agreement with Egypt at any cost," saying that Israel does not want to engage in military activity against

President Barack Obama is poised on the precipice of defeat. 2008’s Obama idolatry has evolved into 2012’s Obama fatigue. The enthusiasm, bordering on adulation, has withered; the “hope” has diminished; and the “change we need” is now the object of derision. Obama is, at best, a well-intentioned but clueless blunderer who needs 8 years to accomplish what Ronald Reagan did in four; or, at worst, an incompetent. (Snip) In all likelihood, the next president will be a colossal failure, beset by intractable debt and revenue deficiencies. For each party, losing now is winning later. She's a self-employed photographer; he's an unemployed former copy editor. Despite career setbacks and a declining living standard, Cragnotti and Eiler remain optimistic. - Hilda Mitrani, 51, of North Miami Beach, Fla. New York - Sometimes, an increase in the unemployment rate is good news for the economy. October was one of those months. The rise, to 7.9% from 7.8% in September, was due to more people entering the job market. Many of those who had stopped searching for work were encouraged enough by the economy to start looking once again. In determining the unemployment rate, the Labor Department surveys households to see how many people are in the labor force -- either on the job or looking for work. October's survey showed 578,000 more people than in September. About 170,000 of

My conviction that better days are ahead is not based on promises and hollow rhetoric but solid plans and proven results.” (Snip) A variety of polls show that Obama and Romney are either in a dead heat

An illegal immigrant from Mexico is challenging the constitutionality of the state’s driver license law in a case the Georgia Supreme Court is set to hear Monday. Fernando Castillo-Solis says the law — which requires motorists who have lived in Georgia for 30 days or more to get a state-issued license before driving — discriminates against illegal immigrants. At issue is a part of the law that says motorists can’t be convicted of driving without a license if they can later present their licenses in court. Since illegal immigrants are ineligible for Georgia licenses, they don’t have the same protection.

Not long ago, the Romney campaign announced it had recruited more than 300 retired military generals for a special advisory board. Now the campaign boasts the endorsement of 150 of the nation’s most revered military heroes. 150 former prisoners of war have now endorsed the Republican challenger, according to a campaign announcement made this week. The list includes well-known figures, such as Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Rep. Sam Johnson (R-Texas) and former Federal Trade Commissioner Orson Swindle, all of whom were held captive in North Vietnam during the Vietnam war. Other names are more obscure.

On a typical work day in San Francisco, at least 27 private employers are picking up workers in shuttle buses — complete with cushioned seats and WiFi — at more than 200 stops across the city. The transit option is a booming private enterprise that reduces traffic congestion and air pollution. Some in the city want to snuff it out, San Francisco-style, with government regulations and fees. San Francisco Supervisor John Avalos wants to eliminate the cushy private shuttles and charge employers to use the Municipal Transit Agency's spartan buses, according to the San Francisco Examiner. Headline split by staff.
