Obama administration officials are feeling the pressure to answer some basic questions about their responsibility for what happened September 11 in Benghazi. As has become very clear, the administration doesn't want to answer the questions, such as what the president did and didn't do that evening; what military assets were available and why, if certain ones were available, they weren't deployed; why senior Administration officials claimed subsequently that what happened was a riot caused by a video; and so forth. But stonewalling looks bad. So the administration gave the Washington Post's David Ignatius access to their "timeline,"

Writing at Instapundit, Elizabeth Price Foley says she’s never seen anything quite like this blistering editorial. I have to agree. It’s astounding. Based on documents released by the committee, on the day of the attack the Pentagon dispatched a drone with a video camera so everyone in Washington could see what was happening in real time. The drone documented no crowds protesting any video. But around 4 p.m. Washington received an email from the Benghazi mission saying it was under a military-style attack. The White House, the Pentagon, the State Department and the CIA

When leading pundits, pollsters and prognosticators seem to agree that the re-election of President Obama is all but inevitable, why do grassroots Democrats seem so anxious and depressed? If the president’s most ardent supporters feel soul-deep certainty that their candidate has richly earned another term in office, then how is it that they universally acknowledge that he’ll draw far fewer votes than he did as an untried freshman senator four years ago? A revealing report by Joe Garofoli in the San Francisco Chronicle found local liberals “so freaked out about the prospect of President Obama losing his re-election bid

Workers have started the long process of opening the thousands of absentee ballots that have flowed in for this month’s election. Franklin County Board of Elections employees, some of them seasonal, are allowed to start opening the absentee ballots 10 days before Election Day. The envelopes containing the ballots are opened facedown so that workers don’t know the name of the voter. The ballots then must be fed into optical scanners that read the darkened ovals next to candidates’ names and other ballot items. “We’ll keep doing that until Election Day,

The Benghazi debacle boils down to a single key factor — the granting or withholding of “cross-border authority.” This opinion is informed by my experience as a Navy SEAL officer who took a NavSpecWar Detachment to Beirut. Once the alarm is sent – in this case, from the consulate in Benghazi — dozens of HQs are notified and are in the planning loop in real time, including AFRICOM and EURCOM, both located in Germany. Without waiting for specific orders from Washington, they begin planning and executing rescue operations, including moving personnel, ships, and aircraft

This piece is as noteworthy for its sourcing as it is for its substance. The dam’s starting to break. “The [Counterterrorism Security Group] is the one group that’s supposed to know what resources every agency has. They know of multiple options and have the ability to coordinate counterterrorism assets across all the agencies,” a high-ranking government official told CBS News. (Snip)Inexplicably, they also didn’t call on their rapid-reaction counterterrorism coordination squad, the Foreign Emergency Support Team, even though the consulate attack was, um, (a) foreign and (b) an emergency that (c) required support.

Blue Ash, Ohio – Former Sen. Fred Thompson today said he was “totally disgusted” by the Obama administration’s handling of the Libya terrorist attack, saying that U.S. officials failed to act “while our people were being systematically slaughtered” at the Benghazi consulate. Speaking at an event sponsored by the free-market group Americans for Prosperity, the former Republican senator from Tennessee invoked his experience nearly 40 years ago as a Watergate investigator, saying that Congress must “get to the bottom of” the administration’s failures in the Sept. 11 incident that left Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans dead in Libya.

To my European friends: I see from various polls that very nearly all of you support President Obama’s reelection. The numbers are remarkable, indeed incredible. More than ninety percent of you would vote Obama (94% of Italians, for example, and the numbers for Great Britain, France, Spain and Germany are even higher). Other numbers show that nearly half of you think you should somehow be able to vote in our elections, since American policies have such an enormous effect on you. All of which reinforces my belief—speaking as the grandson of Russian immigrants who arrived in Harlem and Western

WASHINGTON--The federal government gave New York and New Jersey a financial boost in recovering from Hurricane Sandy today by agreeing to have Washington reimburse the full cost of emergency public transportation and power restoration to the region. The money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will cover costs such repairing substations, power plants and power lines while also providing money for extra buses and driver overtime. [Snip] Under federal law, FEMA is required to pay 75 percent of certain damages but in the case of major disasters can provide as much as 90 percent or the full cost.

Was it only last week, pre-Sandy, that the Obama campaign ran the generally smutty, unpleasantly manipulative political ad featuring Lena Dunham, called “First Time,” which attempted to conflate a young woman’s first vote with losing her virginity? In addition to the smarmy, smutty tone, the ad was an ugly, desperate attempt to manipulate young women into voting for Obama, on the general grounds that he is “a great guy,” and “cool.” Apart from the fact that neither of those qualities are really at the top of the list of key attributes for boyfriends or leaders of the free world, the

It was definitely a scary 48 hours for the inhabitants of New York. But now that Hurricane Sandy has moved away from the East Coast, it's back to business for most New Yorkers, including Bette Midler. The veteran actress and singer continued her life as usual and celebrated her yearly extravagant celebrity 'Hulaween' bash on Wednesday night in the storm-struck city. Despite the fact that Lower Manhattan is still without power, Bette managed to find a venue uptown which did have electricity: The Waldorf Astoria hotel.

New Yorkers have resorted to digging through filthy dumpsters for food as they embark on their fourth night without power and for many, without water. Shocking images captured groups of residents sifting through garbage outside a Key Food supermarket at Avenue A and East 4th Street in the East Village today. Families, elderly people and young residents were seen climbing into the dumpster hunting for whatever they could find to eat. According to NBC New York, whose crews came across the confronting scene, the local supermarket had discarded piles of food that had gone bad after Hurricane Sandy shut down

Barack Obama headed back onto the campaign trail today for the first time after Superstorm Sandy struck and said now is not the time for 'petty differences' between parties, but then went on to attack his rival Mitt Romney.[Snip] Obama said today: ‘Our hearts go out to those who have lost their loved ones. Scandal: A month before the terrorist attack, the State Department was warned Benghazi couldn't protect itself and was surrounded by Islamist militia and al-Qaida camps. It was 3 a.m. and the administration pressed "snooze." When the U.S. mission in Benghazi called an Aug. 15 emergency meeting, it wasn't to discuss an obscure Internet video. It was to discuss the lack of security for a consulate surrounded by at least 10 terrorist camps. An Aug. 16 cable to the office of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and obtained by Fox News reported that the State Department's senior security officer "expressed

“Ronald Reagan changed the trajectory of America in a way that Richard Nixon did not and in a way that Bill Clinton did not.” That was Barack Obama in 2008. And he was right. Reagan was an ideological inflection point, ending a 50-year liberal ascendancy and beginning a 30-year conservative ascendancy. It is common for one party to take control and enact its ideological agenda. Ascendancy, however, occurs only when the opposition inevitably regains power and then proceeds to accept the basic premises of the preceding revolution. Thus, Republicans railed for 20 years

In November 2011, former Democratic pollsters — and current gadflies — Doug Schoen and Pat Caddell made a much-discussed argument in the pages of the Wall Street Journal. The miserable state of the economy, they claimed, restricted the options for President Obama’s reelection strategy. He could still win. “But the kind of campaign required for the president’s political survival,” they said, “would make it almost impossible for him to govern — not only during the campaign, but throughout a second term. Put simply, it seems that the White House has concluded that if the president cannot run on his record

The chairman of the House oversight panel sent Secretary of State Hillary Clinton a scathing letter on Thursday accusing the administration of hiding information pointing to Libyan authorities' possible involvement in the deadly Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. The letter comes after Foreign Policy reported earlier in the day that reporters in Benghazi had found evidence that a Benghazi police officer appeared to have photographed the inside of the mission on the morning of the attack. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans died when Islamist militants attacked the mission that night.

Intelligence officials have disclosed a new detailed timeline of the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, acknowledging the CIA played a greater role in responding to the attack than has previously been disclosed. A senior U.S. intelligence official also insisted that the CIA security team that initially responded to the attack was not given orders “to stand down in providing support,” as had been suggested in media reports. The timeline provided by a senior U.S. intelligence official gives the first precise account of how CIA security teams provided the first response to the Sept. 11 attack

CIA officials on the ground in Libya dispatched security forces to the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi within 25 minutes and made other key decisions about how to respond to the waves of attacks on U.S. installations on September 11, a senior American intelligence official said on Thursday. Officials in Washington monitored events through message traffic and a hovering U.S. military drone but did not interfere with or reject requests for help from officials in the line of fire, the official said. The information emerged as officials made available on Thursday a timeline chronicling

The CIA rushed security operatives to an American diplomatic compound in Libya within 25 minutes after it had come under attack and played a more central role in the effort to fend off a night-long siege than has been acknowledged publicly, U.S. intelligence officials said Thursday. The agency mobilized the evacuation effort, took control of an unarmed U.S. military drone to map possible escape routes, dispatched an emergency security team from Tripoli, the capital, and chartered aircraft that ultimately carried surviving American personnel to safety, U.S. officials said.

There is virtually no doubt now that the Obama Administration, despite their attempts to lie to the American public, knew that the attack on the Benghazi compound and the subsequent slaughter of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, was not a spontaneous assault but a pre-planned attack. In a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, headed by Darrell Issa (R-CA) and National Security Subcommittee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), pressed for answers after documents were revealed by

The Fix is moving Ohio from “lean Obama” to “tossup” in our presidential ratings amid a slew of polling that suggests that the race has tightened over the past month, even as the incumbent retains the slightest of edges. With the move, there are now 95 electoral votes — including Ohio’s 18 — from eight states in our “tossup” category. President Obama has 237 electoral votes either solidly in his camp (186) or leaning his way (51). Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has 206 electoral votes either solidly red (170) or leaning in his direction (36).

President Barack Obama today drew crowds of 2,600 in Green Bay, Wisconsin and 4,500 in Las Vegas, Nevada, a far cry from the nearly 80,000 people who showed up for a campaign rally of his during the last week of the 2008 campaign in Fairfax, Virginia. New York Times reporter Mark Landler said the crowd sizes were "Not impressive for the last week of a campaign." By all measures, enthusiasm for Obama -- even among his base -- has diminished considerably in 2012 from 2008, and Thursday's crowd sizes at Obama's rallies are more evidence

Abigael Evans, the 4-year-old Colorado girl who was driven to tears by the seemingly neverending presidential campaign coverage, has received a very rare thing in our modern media age: a formal apology from NPR for making her cry. Abigael became a minor Internet star earlier this week when her mother, Elizabeth, posted a video online of the girl when she became upset after hearing a little too much of "Bronco Bama and Mitt Romney" on the radio. "It'll be over soon, Abby," her mother is heard saying on the video. "The election will be over soon."
