Word has just come out that Disney is buying LucasFilm for just over $4 billion and that it intends to make new Star Wars movies, ultimately a new one every two to three years. I will let that news sink in for those of you hearing this for the first time. Okay, I’m just thinking out loud here. My first reaction was horror. I joked on twitter about “Herbie the Love Bug as R2D2″ and “Lord Vader, we have received reports that the Apple Dumpling Gang is on the ice planet Hoth.” But then I thought, “Who cares?” it’s not like Disney could do more to sully the franchise than Lucas already has.

Over the weekend, Facebook took down a message by the Special Operations Speaks PAC (SOS) which highlighted the fact that Obama denied backup to the forces being overrun in Benghazi. The message was contained in a meme which demonstrated how Obama had relied on the SEALS when he was ready to let them get Osama bin Laden, and how he had turned around and denied them when they called for backup on Sept 11. I spoke with Larry Ward, president of Political Media, Inc -- the media company that handles SOS postings and media production. Ward was the one who personally put the

According to a recent Obama campaign ad, voting in elections is a bit like having sex. That must be why so many Americans who voted for Jimmy Carter are still being treated for trauma. Obama’s latest foray into the tasteless features Lena Dunham--creator of HBO’s Girls and voice of a generation--seductively tells the target audience of young women, “Your first time [voting] shouldn’t be with just anybody. You wanna do it with a great guy… Someone who really cares about and understands women.”[Snip]Its clumsy metaphor cuts both ways (when telephone canvassers call, am I now supposed to tell

The deaths of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi, Libya, demand the outing of President Barack Obama’s Iranian-born, chief advisor Valerie Jarrett. Three times Stevens and his staff were denied help to save their lives on the day of their death. (Snip) Valerie Jarrett gave the order for the bin Laden kill. Was it Jarrett who advised Obama to refuse help to Americans under sustained terrorist attack in Benghazi? The ‘Happy Gang’ membership of the Two-Obamas-Plus-Valerie is one of the most peculiar relationships to ever make a home of the White House.

Wind farms have been “peppered” across Britain without enough consideration for the countryside and people’s homes, a senior Conservative energy minister admitted last night as he warned “enough is enough”. John Hayes said that we can “no longer have wind turbines imposed on communities” and added that it “seems extraordinary” they have allowed to spread so much throughout the country. The energy minister said he had ordered a new analysis of the case for onshore wind power which would form the basis of future government policy, rather than “a bourgeois Left article of faith based on some

The British oil firm BP on Tuesday warned it might be unable to reach a settlement with the U.S. government over the 2010 Gulf of Mexico spill. “BP is in ongoing discussions with the DOJ [Justice Department] and other federal agencies regarding a possible settlement of these claims and whilst it is ready to settle on reasonable terms, a number of unresolved issues remain and there is significant uncertainty as to whether an agreement will ultimately be reached,” BP said Tuesday in its third-quarter earnings report. BP could owe as much as $21 billion in Clean Water Act fines alone, on top of

Back on Sept. 23, the Mason Dixon polling firm saw Florida as “very much a toss-up” and “very much a turnout game,” as they described things to the Tampa Bay Times. It was a virtual tie at 48-47 between Obama and Romney, with libertarian Gary Johnson sitting on 1 percent. But now Mason Dixon is pulling out of the Sunshine State, explaining to the Tampa Bay Times that “Mitt Romney has pretty much nailed down Florida.” Hopefully the “binders full of women” crowd won’t think that means Romney is running around the state and nailing people to palm trees. Today, during a non-campaign campaign stop at the Red Cross, President Obama told the nation something his administration obviously didn’t believe during the seven-hour attack on our consulate in Benghazi (and a nearby annex) on the night of September 11, 2012: That when an "American is in need… we leave nobody behind": This is a tough time for a lot of people; millions of folks all across the Eastern Seaboard, but America's tougher. And we're tougher because we pull together, we leave nobody behind,

Democrats more than Republicans are getting their most loyal supporters to vote early, but with polls showing a close race among those who have voted so far, concerns are being raised about a GOP tsunami on the actual Election Day, next Tuesday. According to a GOP analysis of early voting and absentee ballot requests provided to Secrets, the Democrats are turning out their most reliable, or so-called "high propensity voters" than Republicans, leaving fewer for Election Day. The GOP is pushing weaker supporters to vote early, expecting high enthusiasm to drive their regular supporters to the polls next

Heeeeeere’s Frankenstorm. All bets are off. Television editors and reporters and some of our flightiest politicians have abandoned the presidential campaign for more frightful stuff. They’re determined, as usual, to make something bad a lot worse. (Snip) “Some of us are asking whether we peaked too soon,” one Romney operative tells me. “We don’t think so, but we’re ready for Nov. 7 to come and be gone.” The great fear at Obama headquarters, one operative tells The New York Times, “is that a large number of voters suddenly will get so fed up with the back and forth of the campaign,

Princeton, NJ - Key Gallup indicators of voter turnout, collected prior to superstorm Sandy, suggest voter turnout will fall short of what it was in 2004 and 2008. U.S. registered voters report giving less thought to the election, and are less likely to rate their chance of voting as a "10" on a 10-point scale, than in 2004 and 2008, two higher-turnout elections. However, the 2012 figures are higher than in 1996 and 2000, two lower-turnout elections. (Snip) U.S. voters have not been quite as engaged in the 2012 election as in the two that preceded it, even before Sandy.

Space shuttle Enterprise, NASA's original prototype orbiter, is sitting exposed and appears to have been partially damaged by Hurricane Sandy after the severe storm passed over New York City on Monday night. On public display aboard the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, a converted aircraft carrier, since July, Enterprise had been protected from the elements inside a pressurized pavilion. Based on photos posted online, the inflatable structure appears to have first deflated and then been torn by the winds of the now post-tropical storm cyclone. Photographs show the 180-foot-long

The storm caused by Hurricane Sandy has downed trees, flooded homes and damaged streets in the New York City borough of Staten Island. On the island's south shore, trapped residents, some of whom ignored evacuation orders, pleaded with local officials on Facebook to send help to their flooded homes. Many families were stuck in their attics as they retreated from the rising flood waters, while some even less fortunate were forced to seek help from their rooftops. "Family of 5 trapped on 2nd fl since yesterday included fireman and baby," one Facebook poster wrote on Staten Island City

The venti-sized storm caused a latte trouble for Starbucks junkies after the chain ordered a near-total shutdown — but a rogue open store in Midtown yesterday fueled up hordes of caffeine-starved New Yorkers. Fans walked and took Town Cars to the Starbucks adjacent to the Marriott Marquis off Times Square, as word spread via social media that it was open. “I saw on Facebook that they were open,” said Bethany Owings, 28, who walked 10 blocks from Hell’s Kitchen with daughter Ava Ferrier, 1 1/2, for a fix. Her friend Chris Hernandez, 29, came along.

As leaders begin to assess the high cost of damage from Hurricane Sandy, officials in both parties say the Federal Emergency Management Agency has enough disaster relief funding — for now.FEMA’s coffers are near full because the storm struck at the beginning of the fiscal year, which started Oct. 1. On top of more than $1 billion left over in the Disaster Relief Fund from last year, Congress has appropriated $7.1 billion for fiscal 2013. President Obama’s decision to make emergency declarations in 10 states and the District of Columbia allows local officials to access those funds immediately.

Stapleton said in an email that the congressman and his family are fine and are currently focused on helping constituents recover from the storm. It seems to happen every few weeks. The race tightens or widens or simply continues on exactly as it’s been, and some pundit or reporter declares it a staggering humiliation for the burgeoning world of election quants. Niall Ferguson took his turn at bat in early September. “The economy is in the doldrums,” he wrote. “Yet the incumbent is ahead in the polls. According to a huge body of research by political scientists, this is not supposed to happen.” Actually, according to a huge body of research by political scientists, that was exactly what was supposed to happen. After the first debate,

Elkins, W.Va. - Wet snow and high winds spinning off the edge of superstorm Sandy spread blizzard conditions over parts of West Virginia and neighboring Appalachian states Tuesday, shutting one interstate as trucks and cars bogged down and knocking out power to many. The National Weather Service said a foot and more of snow was reported in lower elevations of West Virginia, where most towns and roads are. High elevations in the mountains were getting more than two feet and a blizzard warning for more than a dozen counties was in effect until Wednesday afternoon.

Mitt Romney will resume campaigning Wednesday with a trio of events in Florida, while President Obama has canceled his election events to stay in Washington to monitor fallout from the storm the ravaged the East Coast. Romney's move effectively ends the temporary suspension in the presidential campaign triggered by the landfall of Hurricane Sandy. Even though Obama will be focusing on coordinating response to the storm, his campaign has shown an awareness of the fact the election is only a week away. If you don't think seven days is time enough time to swing an election, ask George W. Bush about that. A week out in 2000, he was looking like our next president when news of a youthful drunk driving charge was dropped into his lap the Thursday before Election Day. The polls flipped and Bush ended up losing the national popular vote. It's just a fact that seven days is forever in politics, and today the race is officially on for the once-safe states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania -- with plenty of time to win both. Intentionally buried in Politico's completely irrelevant Playbook is the bombshell news
