The venti-sized storm caused a latte trouble for Starbucks junkies after the chain ordered a near-total shutdown — but a rogue open store in Midtown yesterday fueled up hordes of caffeine-starved New Yorkers. Fans walked and took Town Cars to the Starbucks adjacent to the Marriott Marquis off Times Square, as word spread via social media that it was open. “I saw on Facebook that they were open,” said Bethany Owings, 28, who walked 10 blocks from Hell’s Kitchen with daughter Ava Ferrier, 1 1/2, for a fix. Her friend Chris Hernandez, 29, came along.

As leaders begin to assess the high cost of damage from Hurricane Sandy, officials in both parties say the Federal Emergency Management Agency has enough disaster relief funding — for now.FEMA’s coffers are near full because the storm struck at the beginning of the fiscal year, which started Oct. 1. On top of more than $1 billion left over in the Disaster Relief Fund from last year, Congress has appropriated $7.1 billion for fiscal 2013. President Obama’s decision to make emergency declarations in 10 states and the District of Columbia allows local officials to access those funds immediately.

Rep. Bob Turner's (R-N.Y.) house, located in Queens, New York, burned down because of Hurricane Sandy. Trey Stapleton, Turner's communications director, confirmed to The Hill on Tuesday that the congressman's house burned down as a result of a fire related to the massive storm. Stapleton said in an email that the congressman and his family are fine and are currently focused on helping constituents recover from the storm. "Right now we are focused on making sure that we have information available to constituents that need storm relief," Stapleton said.

It seems to happen every few weeks. The race tightens or widens or simply continues on exactly as it’s been, and some pundit or reporter declares it a staggering humiliation for the burgeoning world of election quants. Niall Ferguson took his turn at bat in early September. “The economy is in the doldrums,” he wrote. “Yet the incumbent is ahead in the polls. According to a huge body of research by political scientists, this is not supposed to happen.” Actually, according to a huge body of research by political scientists, that was exactly what was supposed to happen. After the first debate,

Elkins, W.Va. - Wet snow and high winds spinning off the edge of superstorm Sandy spread blizzard conditions over parts of West Virginia and neighboring Appalachian states Tuesday, shutting one interstate as trucks and cars bogged down and knocking out power to many. The National Weather Service said a foot and more of snow was reported in lower elevations of West Virginia, where most towns and roads are. High elevations in the mountains were getting more than two feet and a blizzard warning for more than a dozen counties was in effect until Wednesday afternoon.

Mitt Romney will resume campaigning Wednesday with a trio of events in Florida, while President Obama has canceled his election events to stay in Washington to monitor fallout from the storm the ravaged the East Coast. Romney's move effectively ends the temporary suspension in the presidential campaign triggered by the landfall of Hurricane Sandy. Even though Obama will be focusing on coordinating response to the storm, his campaign has shown an awareness of the fact the election is only a week away. The White House updated reporters early Tuesday morning with the president's work on

If you don't think seven days is time enough time to swing an election, ask George W. Bush about that. A week out in 2000, he was looking like our next president when news of a youthful drunk driving charge was dropped into his lap the Thursday before Election Day. The polls flipped and Bush ended up losing the national popular vote. It's just a fact that seven days is forever in politics, and today the race is officially on for the once-safe states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania -- with plenty of time to win both. Intentionally buried in Politico's completely irrelevant Playbook is the bombshell news

For the second time during the presidential campaign, a group of African-American ministers in North Carolina has criticized Franklin Graham for challenging the spiritual beliefs of President Barack Obama, accusing the evangelist Monday of promoting a narrow form of Christianity that supports a politically conservative point of view. Meeting in Charlotte, the group read an open letter to Graham that comes in response to a series of full-page ads that bear a photograph of his father, Billy Graham, and ask voters to elect candidates who support “biblical principles.” In comments to the

As Hurricane Sandy battered the East Coast and disrupted the lives of millions of Americans, radio listeners heard President Obama joke about the songs on his iPod. The radio segment demonstrates the perils of pre-taped interviews. Obama made the remarks about his diverse taste in music on Saturday, but he did not realize it would be aired at such a sombre time. ‘I’ve got a pretty good mix. I’ve got old school. Stevie Wonder and James Brown. I’ve got Rolling Stones. Bob Dylan. And then I’ve got everything from Jay-Z to Eminem to the Fugees to you name it,’ he said. Obama has canceled campaign

Canberra — A poll shows that Australians appear to be split over Prime Minister Julia Gillard's judgment that her main political rival is sexist. Gillard's fiery speech to Parliament on 9 October in which she branded opposition leader Tony Abbott a misogynist for a string of allegedly sexist comments has been lauded by feminists around the world. Two media-tracking sources say Mitt Romney's campaign has started reserving TV time in Pennsylvania for the final two days of the campaign, including Election Day. The initial placements come as the pro-Romney super PAC Restore Our Future is buying over $2 million in time there, and as Crossroads is also going up with a buy over $600,000. The Obama campaign, forced to expend resources there, has responded with a defensive buy of over $600,000. The Romney buy is intended to signal the campaign considers the state, which Republicans have made plays for in past presidential cycles

Remnants of Hurricane Sandy will spark fierce winds and rain across Britain from tomorrow, forecasters predicted last night. One warned of a “horror show” in time for Halloween. Gusts of up to 80mph threaten to wreak havoc while huge downpours are expected to last until the weekend. Forecaster Jonathan Powell, of Vantage Weather Services, said the remnants of Hurricane Sandy will drive the wind and rain. He said: “Britain could feel a nudge from Hurricane Sandy over the next couple of days. “We are bracing ourselves for the backlash of what Sandy could generate in the United States.”

Just over 1 percent were still undecided. In a September Suffolk University/7News poll, Warren led Brown 48 percent to 44 percent, with 8 percent undecided. “Elizabeth Warren is riding a final wave of momentum to the U.S. Senate,”

Two British soldiers have been shot dead by a man wearing Afghan police uniform in what appeared to be the latest “green on blue” attack where a rogue member of the Afghan forces has killed his allies. The soldiers from 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles were shot dead at a police checkpoint in Helmand province. British and Afghan officials confirmed the killer wore police uniform, but it was not immediately clear if he was a genuine member of the force, or an insurgent fighter in disguise. The killer fled and was last night being hunted. Major Laurence Roche, spokesman for British forces in

Washington - President Barack Obama is warning the public that the massive storm that struck the East Coast "is not yet over." The president says there are still risks of flooding and downed power lines. He called the storm "heartbreaking for the nation." The president offered his thoughts and prayers to those affected and told them "America is with you." He said he also told government officials coordinating the response that there was "no excuse for inaction." And he said he told governors in affected areas that if they get no for an answer, "they can call me personally at the White House."

Hundreds of thousands of people are without power in New York and the transit system, schools, the stock exchange and Broadway are all out of action after

Hurricane Sandy's pummeling of the eastern United States has already thrown the presidential campaign off course and disrupted early voting in several states, but could she be the deciding factor in this election? Political scientists have found that bad weather on Election Day typically benefits Republicans, but how much Sandy will affect voter turnout on November 6 remains a mystery. The same can be said of the potential political fallout from the storm. Will President Barack Obama look strong and commander-in-chief-like as he stares down the hurricane, as Sen. John McCain
