The US Navy tested an 11-foot naval drone capable of firing missiles at enemy vessels off the Maryland coast last week. The missile system and launcher were supplied by Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. A Friday Wired report indicated that the navy has been working on the project since 2007. Despite the successful test, which saw the craft fire missiles at dummy targets up to two miles away, a fleet of naval drones is still “years and many more tests” away. Although aerial drones have become a common facet of modern warfare, the remotely controlled inflatable craft is the first naval drone

New York - With just over one week left until the hotly contested presidential elections, investors will pin their attention on the domestic economy this week. But with Hurricane Sandy heading towards the Northeast, investors are also waiting to hear what it might mean for stock trading on Monday, when the storm is expected to make landfall. (Snip) Otherwise, analysts expect investors to stay quiet ahead of the election, even though a number of reports are on tap to give investors and voters alike a snapshot of the U.S. economic landscape before they head to the polls.

Boston — Abandoned. Used and abused. Thrown under the bus. Stomped upon for political convenience, then left behind like worthless electoral baggage. That’s what you hear when you ask Massachusetts about former governor Mitt Romney. And the contempt isn’t just palpable in the state that knows him best; it’s more like an alternate-universe episode of Cheers — where everybody knows his name. And they’re never glad he came. Yet Romney, should he win the White House on Nov. 6, won’t just get the last laugh in the land of the Kennedys. The triumph inside his election-night headquarters at

As the frenzied race for the White House comes down to the wire, tens of thousands of partisan lawyers are mobilizing under the radar in battleground states, all steeling for one terrifying scenario: a recount that could decide the presidency. Their objective is to head off a repeat of the Gore-Bush fiasco 12 years ago in which Al Gore won the popular vote and George W. Bush captured the Electoral College and ultimately the presidency. “They are all bracing for Florida in 2000 — everyone wants to be in position so as not to be disadvantaged by a court decision decision in a tie,” says Steve Schmidt,

Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter on Sunday dismissed the Des Moines Register endorsement of GOP candidate Mitt Romney, saying it was not “based at all in reality.” “They endorsed Mitt Romney in the primary, so this was not much of a surprise,” said Cutter on ABC’s “This Week” of the influential swing-state paper’s backing for President Obama’s challenger. “It was a little surprising to read that editorial, because it didn't seem to be based at all in reality, not just in the president's record, but in Mitt Romney's record,” Cutter added. “It says that he'd reach across the

Internal Treasury Department emails obtained by The Daily Caller show that in June 2009 a high-ranking Treasury official planned a backroom meeting to discuss the pension plans for 20,000 nonunion Delphi salaried retirees. Those retirees lost between 30 and 70 percent of their pensions, as well as their healthcare, life insurance and other benefits. Unionized employees working alongside them, however, saw their pensions and benefits made whole. The Obama administration has blamed this decision on the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC), a federal government agency that handles private-sector

A new report from the Associated Press demonstrates the lies and prevarications of the Obama administration over the terrorist attack in Benghazi that ended with the murder of our ambassador and three other Americans. According to the AP, which interviewed, Libyan witnesses, this was obviously an organized assault: 150 bearded gunmen, some wearing the Afghan-style tunics favored by Islamic militants, sealed off the streets leading to the US Consulate in Benghazi. They set up roadblocks with pick-up trucks mounted with heavy machine guns, according to witnesses. The trucks bore the logo of Ansar al-Shariah, a powerful local group of Islamist

Washington - The jobless rate probably rose in October as U.S. employers kept a tight rein on payrolls with the nation closing in on the so-called fiscal cliff, economists said before a report this week. A net 125,000 workers were added to headcounts following an increase of 114,000 in September, according to the median forecast of 72 economists surveyed by Bloomberg before the Nov. 2 Labor Department figures. The unemployment rate climbed to 7.9 percent last month from a three-year low of 7.8 percent, the survey showed.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., argued this morning that Libya has made foreign policy a major part of the presidential campaign and that President Obama has shown "the worst kind of incompetence" on the issue. "I don't know if it's either a cover-up or the worst kind of incompetence, which doesn't qualify the president as commander in chief," McCain said on "Face the Nation" today. He called the administration's handling of the attacks on the U.S. consulate in Libya that killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, a "debacle" that has "exposed the failures of the Obama foreign policy."

Mitt Romney leads President Barack Obama by a single point in today's Public Policy Polling daily tracking survey, but the numbers inside the poll display a clearly worse picture for the president Romney's one-point lead is a slight increase from Saturday, when the candidates were tied. But a deep dive into the numbers paint the picture of a president whose approval is on the decline and is struggling to pick up votes with Independents. (Snip) Romney leads the self-identified Independent vote by an astounding 16 points. Among this crucial group, Obama's approval-to-disapproval is 33-60, and Romney's favorability is 53-37.

The Statue of Liberty turns 126 years old today and visitors will get a much closer look as the interior and crown re-open after a one year, $30 million restoration. The 354 spiral steps were replaced with a safer — and not as steep — set of 393 steps, which still proves to be a strenuous 20 minute climb to the crown for an adult, according to the National parks Service. The interior also shows off the flowing robes and other statue characteristics like the heel and nose. “We are delighted to once again open Lady Liberty’s

Obama National Field Director Jeremy Bird released a memo on Thursday designed to calm nervous Democrats by advancing the Obama campaign's meme that it is dominating early voting in the battleground state of Ohio. But as former Republican National Committee strategist Adrian Gray points out, the Obama campaign's Ohio narrative is bogus. "When things are ugly for a campaign, these types of memos can start flying," writes Mr. Gray. "It is troubling for the president’s supporters that they could not come up with at least a handful of positive data points in Ohio."

President Barack Obama and Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney are virtually tied among Long Island voters, according to a Siena College/Newsday poll. Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts and co-founder of the Bain Capital investment firm, leads slightly among likely Nassau and Suffolk voters -- 47 percent to Obama's 45 percent. Seven percent of respondents said they were undecided or refused to declare their pick, and 1 percent opted for a third-party candidate. The poll has a 3-point margin of error. The results echo national polls that show a tight race leading up to the Nov. 6 election.

Four years ago. The autumn of 2008. The U.S. and global financial systems were in full meltdown mode. Banks were imploding because of home mortgages gone bad. The toxicity of those assets was spreading like a cancer throughout the entire economy. And in the middle of it was a presidential election, pitting Republican John McCain against Democrat Barack Obama. We know how that one turned out. Fast forward to today. The autumn of 2012. The U.S. and global economy are still in recovery mode, a tentative recovery at best. The federal government owes $16 trillion and has run deficits

The No.1 issue in our region and our nation today is how to recharge our economy and get more people working in good-paying jobs. President Barack Obama has had four years to overcome the job losses of the Great Recession he inherited, but the recovery has been too slow and too weak. It’s time for new leadership from Mitt Romney, a governor and business leader with a record of solving problems.

Systemic, long-term change is needed in Washington, but after four years with President Barack Obama setting the nation’s course, that change has not come. Let’s acknowledge some of Obama’s achievements up front, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 and bringing Osama bin Laden to justice. But in regard to the issue that is front and center for Americans — jobs and economic recovery — this nation remains stalled.

Saudi King Abdullah demanded a U.N. resolution Saturday condemning insults on religions. His calls came in response to the deadly protests that have been erupting throughout the Muslim world, which have been widely blamed on a low-budget film mocking the Prophet Mohamed. “I demand a U.N. resolution that condemns any country or group that insults religions and prophets,” he said during a meeting at his palace with religious figures and heads of hajj delegations, referring to the pilgrimage to Mecca, during which Muslims affirm their submission to the tenets of Islam.

Let’s try to understand why urgent pleas for help in Benghazi went unanswered, and who is responsible. The CIA says it didn’t turn down any pleas. And now, a National Security Council spokesman says that “neither the president nor anyone in the White House denied any requests for assistance in Benghazi.” This leaves the Defense Department. And, indeed, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta has stepped up with an explanation of why not assistance was provided, namely uncertainty about the situation on the ground. Thus, it appears that the military may well have been the decision-maker, in the first instance. But

In a presidential election centered on domestic economic issues at a crucial moment in history, voters this year must decide if they are or are not satisfied with and confident about the direction in which America is moving. We are neither satisfied nor confident. In our view, change is needed. Because we wish to see the country chart a new course to economic vitality and fiscal sanity, the Journal endorses former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney to be the next president of the United States.

Months before she beclowned herself as an Obama surrogate cum debate moderator, CNN's Candy Crowley declared that the selection of Paul Ryan for VP revealed a sort of "death wish" by Republicans. Within the media/liberal bubble, her analysis was widely embraced, with some pundits suggesting that Romney had thrown away both Florida and the senior vote throughout the swing states. Whatever happened to Barack the world’s smartest leader and incomparable statesman? Those days are gone forever. Instead, it would be impossible to catalog the staggering list of ill-advised, mistaken, foolish, naive and utterly inane decisions by Obama and his administration. So, instead—let us use a single Obama catastrophe, the events of Libya—to critique and symbolize his failed tenure. This is reasonable because every bad Barack habit and evil instinct is represented in this new American disaster. In the November 2012 presidential election, America is given an opportunity almost no other country suffering under tyranny

According to the Selma Times-Journal, the federal suit, filed by KTK Mining of Richmond, says the company got the necessary permits to do the work on the monument in Old Live Oak Cemetery honoring Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, but the city of Selma, Ala., suspended the permits when the project drew protests. The company's suit says the suspension was done without prior notice to KTK Mining.
