SANFORD – After more than two hours of argument, the judge in the second-degree murder case against George Zimmerman said she will not rule today on the state's request for a gag order. (Snip) However, near the end of the hearing, the judge and lawyers agreed to put another high profile issue on their calendars: Zimmerman's "stand your ground" hearing, where he will ask to have the case thrown out, was set for 45 days before the June 10 trial.

Lena Dunham lost her innocence when she voted for Barack Obama, or so the 26-year-old actress-directrix claims in a creepy new ad for the campaign. "Your first time shouldn't be with just anybody," Dunham--no relation to Stanley Ann, as far as we know--tells the camera. "You want to do it with a great guy." She plays off that ambiguous antecedent for a wearisome 63 seconds. Her own "first time," she explains, was in 2008, with Obama, "someone who really cares about and understands women. . . . My first time voting was amazing. It was this line in the sand:

The head of the House Democratic campaign arm this week proposed a constitutional amendment that would give the winner of the popular vote in the presidential race an additional 29 electoral votes. Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) did not offer an explanation in the joint resolution filed in the House for why he was proposing to change the way elections in the U.S. are decided. Under the Constitution, the candidate who wins at least 270 electoral votes wins the presidency, regardless of the popular vote. The prospect of a split between the popular vote and the Electoral College usually provokes cries

Trade: Europe's Parliament has moved to revitalize the continent's weak economy by clearing the way for a free-trade agreement with the U.S. A baby step, yes, but if it succeeds, it'll be the mother of all trade pacts. By a vote of 526-94, the European Parliament approved its first resolution calling for talks on a U.S.-European free-trade agreement, starting in the first half of 2013. "We wanted to send a strong political signal in favor of opening negotiations with the United States in order to create a real trans-Atlantic market with enormous opportunities for growth," said EU's Vital Moreira before the vote.

An Afghan immigrant who slit his wife’s throat used to regularly get into such loud, abusive arguments with her that neighbours noticed and police showed up, their daughter said. “It was really embarrassing. Sometimes they would just start in front of people,” Tamana Khairi testified at her father’s 2009 preliminary hearing. (Snip) The trial has already heard that Randjida Khairi, 53, defended their six adult or teenaged children’s increasing Westernization, while it angered her husband. Randjida Khairi would periodically threaten to leave him, but would be held back by their Afghan culture, the daughter said.

New York - One of America's fastest-growing wireless carriers is a company you've probably never heard of: Tracfone Wireless. It's the U.S. arm of a telecom empire controlled by the world's richest man, Carlos Slim, and it's the biggest player in an increasingly lucrative market: subsidized mobile phones for low-income Americans. (Snip) Where does the money for Lifeline subsidy come from? You. Take a look at your phone bill and you'll see a charge -- typically a few dollars a month -- for payments to the "Universal Service Fund." Seattle - President Barack Obama on Thursday endorsed state ballot initiatives to legalise same-sex marriage in Washington state, Maryland and Maine as he sought to galvanise gay and lesbian enthusiasm for his re-election bid. Statements issued by the Obama campaign in those three states urging voters to approve the gay-marriage measures on their respective 6 November ballots came five months after Obama became the first US president to express support for the right of same-sex couples to wed.

Have good source in Chicago saying their office is acting very odd today as well. Can’t say if this will break out all the way now, but we are getting very close to an all out WH red alert scenario. Not there yet but very close. Significant activity from Ruemmler’s office over the last 24. In this situation there will likely

Mitt Romney blasted President Obama on Friday as shrinking from "the scale of the times," and having failed to make up ground on the economic challenges he inherited. Romney made his remarks in a rare prepared speech on the campaign trail in Iowa, where he vowed "big change" for the economy. "Four years ago, candidate Obama spoke to the scale of the times. Today, he shrinks from it, trying instead to distract our attention from the biggest issues to the smallest — from characters on Sesame Street and silly word games to misdirected personal attacks he knows are false," Romney

AMES, Iowa – Mitt Romney has cancelled a planned campaign rally Sunday night in Virginia Beach due to the threat of Hurricane Sandy, a campaign official said Friday. Romney had scheduled three campaign rallies across Virginia on Sunday, but will not make the final stop, which was to be at the Farm Bureau Live Ampitheater in Virginia Beach. The other two rallies – at Battlefield High School in Haymarket and at the University of Richmond in Richmond – are scheduled to go on as planned.

Mitt Romney is now tied with Barack Obama in Wisconsin, one of the 'firewall' states the president hoped would protect him against defeats in Florida and Virginia, according to a new poll. Rasmussen found that Romney and Obama were tied on 49 per cent in the state, which Obama won in a 14-point landslide in 2008. Buoyed by internal polling which shows similar numbers, Romney is to head to Wisconsin next week, as first reported by MailOnline last Tuesday. He will hold a rally in the Milwaukee area on Tuesday morning.(Snip) Romney advisers believe that Governor Scott Walker's recall Snip added by staff.

Kabul, Afghanistan - A suicide bomber detonated explosives outside a mosque packed with senior regional officials in northern Afghanistan on a major Muslim holiday Friday, killing 41 people. The officials escaped unhurt, and many of the dead were soldiers and police. The attack was the latest in a series of deadly strikes in recent weeks against Afghan army, police and government officials. The choice of targets suggests that the insurgents are increasingly turning against Afghan authorities and security forces now that NATO is drawing down toward a final withdrawal of foreign combat troops in 2014.

The nation's weak economic recovery continued in the third quarter of 2012, with the growth rate reaching a sluggish 2%--largely fueled by a "burst" of government spending, according to news agencies. The growth rate was a modest improvement on the 1.3% expansion of gross domestic product achieved in the second quarter, and surpassed market expectations, which had been low. The 2% rate may yet be revised; last month the rate for the second quarter was revised downward from 1.7% to 1.3%.

President Obama fights for his re-election in the next 10 days, but faces a potential obstacle: a major hurricane. With Hurricane Sandy heading toward the United States, Obama held a preparation meeting today with emergency management officials. President Obama issued a presidential proclamation for “United Nations Day” on October 24 praising the controversial global body while urging governors and officials in all 50 states to celebrate the occasion with “appropriate ceremonies.” The statement drew swift criticism from UN opponents and conservative activists, who argue that the U.S. government should instead withdraw from the scandal-plagued international outfit.Despite of a series of recent set-backs and major controversies surrounding the institution, President Obama, an unabashed fan of the planetary body that critics refer to as the “dictators club,” praised the UN and the “ideals” it purportedly represents. Washington - An outspoken surrogate for Mitt Romney's White House campaign suggested late on Thursday that race was a factor in former secretary of state Colin Powell's endorsement of President Barack Obama. Former New Hampshire governor John Sununu told CNN that the re-endorsement of Obama by Powell - a Republican who served in both Bush presidencies but backed Obama in 2008 - was possibly due to both men being African-Americans. "Frankly, when you take a look at Colin Powell you have to wonder whether that's an endorsement based on issues or whether he's got a slightly different reason for preferring

Two pollsters, Gallup and Rasmussen Reports, are projecting Republican voters to have a slight advantage on November 6 over Democratic voters. When they add likely voters leaning towards one party or another, they find an electorate that is marginally more Republican than in 2004, when voters narrowly reelected incumbent President George W. Bush. Gallup projects that the demographics of the electorate will nearly mirror 2008, but party support favors Republicans more than the last two presidential election cycles.

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Leon Panetta calls the criticism of the Obama administration’s handling of the Libya terror attack “Monday morning quarterbacking.” Panetta defended the way the White House handled the aftermath of the deaths of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans who were killed during an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi for which terror group Ansar al-Sharia took responsibility. Panetta said that they didn’t have enough “real-time information” to send military forces to respond. “(The) basic principle is that you don’t deploy forces Source corrected by staff.

Newly released figures from Gallup show that the demographics of the American electorate ... have changed very little since 2008 except in one way: Party affiliation has swung dramatically toward the Republican party... Gallup’s tallies on the composition of the electorate show that, among likely voters, Democrats held a 10-point advantage over Republicans in party affiliation in 2008 — 39 to 29 percent. Four year later, Gallup’s tallies show that, among likely voters, Republicans hold a 1-point advantage over Democrats in party affiliation — 36 to 35 percent. That’s an 11-point swing in just four years.
