Is Obama's 'firewall' crumbling? Romney

'safe state' of Wisconsin

Mitt Romney is now tied with Barack Obama in Wisconsin, one of the 'firewall' states the president hoped would protect him against defeats in Florida and Virginia, according to a new poll. Rasmussen found that Romney and Obama were tied on 49 per cent in the state, which Obama won in a 14-point landslide in 2008. Buoyed by internal polling which shows similar numbers, Romney is to head to Wisconsin next week, as first reported by MailOnline last Tuesday. He will hold a rally in the Milwaukee area on Tuesday morning.(Snip) Romney advisers believe that Governor Scott Walker's recall

Suicide attack kills

Kabul, Afghanistan - A suicide bomber detonated explosives outside a mosque packed with senior regional officials in northern Afghanistan on a major Muslim holiday Friday, killing 41 people. The officials escaped unhurt, and many of the dead were soldiers and police. The attack was the latest in a series of deadly strikes in recent weeks against Afghan army, police and government officials. The choice of targets suggests that the insurgents are increasingly turning against Afghan authorities and security forces now that NATO is drawing down toward a final withdrawal of foreign combat troops in 2014.

The nation's weak economic recovery continued in the third quarter of 2012, with the growth rate reaching a sluggish 2%--largely fueled by a "burst" of government spending, according to news agencies. The growth rate was a modest improvement on the 1.3% expansion of gross domestic product achieved in the second quarter, and surpassed market expectations, which had been low. The 2% rate may yet be revised; last month the rate for the second quarter was revised downward from 1.7% to 1.3%.

President Obama fights for his re-election in the next 10 days, but faces a potential obstacle: a major hurricane. With Hurricane Sandy heading toward the United States, Obama held a preparation meeting today with emergency management officials. "Impacts from the storm could be felt as early as this weekend," said a White House readout, later adding: "The President asked his team to continue to ensure there were no unmet needs and to keep him regularly updated on weather forecasts and hurricane preparations." Left unsaid: A damaging hurricane could affect Obama's campaign plans (as well as those of Republican rival

President Obama issued a presidential proclamation for “United Nations Day” on October 24 praising the controversial global body while urging governors and officials in all 50 states to celebrate the occasion with “appropriate ceremonies.” The statement drew swift criticism from UN opponents and conservative activists, who argue that the U.S. government should instead withdraw from the scandal-plagued international outfit.Despite of a series of recent set-backs and major controversies surrounding the institution, President Obama, an unabashed fan of the planetary body that critics refer to as the “dictators club,” praised the UN and the “ideals” it purportedly represents. Charles Woods was reacting to accounts by Fox News sources that a request from the CIA annex for backup was denied by U.S. officials. His son, Tyrone Woods, was killed in the Sept. 11 assault.

Washington - An outspoken surrogate for Mitt Romney's White House campaign suggested late on Thursday that race was a factor in former secretary of state Colin Powell's endorsement of President Barack Obama. Former New Hampshire governor John Sununu told CNN that the re-endorsement of Obama by Powell - a Republican who served in both Bush presidencies but backed Obama in 2008 - was possibly due to both men being African-Americans. "Frankly, when you take a look at Colin Powell you have to wonder whether that's an endorsement based on issues or whether he's got a slightly different reason for preferring

Jacques Barzun, the pioneering cultural historian who became a best-selling author in his 90s with "From Dawn to Decadence," has died. He was 104. Mr. Barzun's son-in-law says Mr. Barzun passed away Thursday evening in San Antonio, where he'd lived in recent years. Mr. Barzun wrote dozens of books and essays on everything from philosophy and music to detective novels. The French immigrant also wrote a memorable essay on baseball, in which he advised that, "whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball."

Gallup, Rasmussen Forecast More

Two pollsters, Gallup and Rasmussen Reports, are projecting Republican voters to have a slight advantage on November 6 over Democratic voters. When they add likely voters leaning towards one party or another, they find an electorate that is marginally more Republican than in 2004, when voters narrowly reelected incumbent President George W. Bush. Gallup projects that the demographics of the electorate will nearly mirror 2008, but party support favors Republicans more than the last two presidential election cycles.

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Leon Panetta calls the criticism of the Obama administration’s handling of the Libya terror attack “Monday morning quarterbacking.” Panetta defended the way the White House handled the aftermath of the deaths of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans who were killed during an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi for which terror group Ansar al-Sharia took responsibility. Panetta said that they didn’t have enough “real-time information” to send military forces to respond. “(The) basic principle is that you don’t deploy forces

Newly released figures from Gallup show that the demographics of the American electorate ... have changed very little since 2008 except in one way: Party affiliation has swung dramatically toward the Republican party... Gallup’s tallies on the composition of the electorate show that, among likely voters, Democrats held a 10-point advantage over Republicans in party affiliation in 2008 — 39 to 29 percent. Four year later, Gallup’s tallies show that, among likely voters, Republicans hold a 1-point advantage over Democrats in party affiliation — 36 to 35 percent. That’s an 11-point swing in just four years.

With polls showing tight races in battleground states and Mitt Romney taking a narrow lead in the latest national ABC News/Washington Post tracking surveys, President Obama will take his message to young voters today during a half-hour interview on MTV. The MTV special comes a day after parts of Obama's one-on-one with Rolling Stone magazine appeared online, including an exchange in which he offered a colorful assessment of his opponent's relationship with the truth. "You know, kids have good instincts," Obama said, joking that he was "a killer" with the "six to 12" demographic.

Republican nominee Mitt Romney jumped back out to a 5-point lead over President Barack Obama in Gallup's daily tracking poll of likely voters Friday, and now leads the president 51-46. Obama and Romney are now tied, 48-48, among registered voters, and the president's approval rating dipped to just 48 percent, below the "safe" level for an incumbent's re-election. The results indicate the halting of what had been a pronounced Obama bounce over the past seven days of polling. Obama had climbed back from a 7-point deficit a week ago to just 3 points over the past two days.

Barring some dramatic change in the final ten days or so, Mitt Romney will win the popular vote in the 2012 presidential election. In the 22 national head-to-head polls with Romney conducted in the month of October, Obama has hit 50 percent once, 49 percent four times, 48 percent three times, 47 percent eight times, 46 percent once, and 45 percent five times. (He hasn’t hit 48 percent in a national poll since October 20.) Mind you, in most of these polls Obama has trailed narrowly, with Romney at 48 to 50 percent,

Newt Gingrich is predicting that this election will be a near-landslide victory for Mitt Romney. “I believe the minimum result will be 53-47 Romney, over 300 electoral votes, and the Republicans will pick up the Senate,” the former House speaker said Thursday night on Fox News’s “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren.” Gingrich, who vied for the GOP presidential nomination earlier this year, named several swing states where he’s expecting success for Romney and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, including Wisconsin, Virginia, Florida and North Carolina. Gingrich added that Michigan and Pennsylvania are “starting to be in play.”

There is an old saying that success has a thousand fathers, but failure is an orphan. That gives a lot of insight into the sequestration clause in last year’s debt-ceiling deal, which has not just left Barack Obama’s own Secretary of Defense warning about its “devastating” impact on the military, but also economists warning about the damage it will wreak on the economy. Obama tried to dodge responsibility for the sequestration when Mitt Romney criticized him for it during the final debate, claiming that “[t]he sequester is not something that I’ve proposed. It is something that Congress has proposed.”
