It's a common problem. You're squeezed into a tight economy-class seat trying to eat a snack while working on your iPad or other personal electronic device. Four frustratingly long years ago, a war-weary and economically battered America took a flier on a savior. It didn’t work out. Now, in 12 days, the nation will return to the polls — to reject, or to ratify, the results of the great Barack Obama experiment. That is, to reject or to ratify the notion that hoping for change is a sound footing for productive national policy. But, by the evidence, it is not. It cannot create jobs. (Snip) America needs more than hope. It needs leadership. That is why The Post today endorses the candidacy of Mitt Romney for

The November elections will determine the direction of US climate policy -- and therefore also energy policy and the pace of economic growth: jobs, standards of living, budget deficits and inflation. Obama has already promised to make climate change the centerpiece of his concern -- with all that implies: "Green" energy policy, linked to loss of jobs (Keystone pipeline disapproval), rising gas prices (ethanol mandates), and crony capitalism (Solyndra).

Burbank, Calif. - What’s real estate mogul Donald Trump got against President Barack Obama? The president says it’s an old grudge that goes back — way, way back — to their childhood days in Kenya. ‘‘We had constant run-ins on the soccer fields,’’ Obama told ‘‘Tonight Show’’ host Jay Leno during a tongue-in-cheek knock on Trump Wednesday night. ‘‘He wasn’t very good and resented it. When we finally moved to America, I thought it would be over.’’ (Snip) Wisecracks aside, Obama told Leno that he has never actually met Trump. Atlanta - Want a chance to win a rifle or handgun? Go vote. That's the message from an Atlanta-area sporting goods store. The promotion caught the attention of the secretary of state's office last week and drew a complaint from a state senator who said it may break the law. Georgia law prohibits anyone from giving or receiving money or gifts in exchange for voting, and felony charges could be brought if the law were broken, Secretary of State Brian Kemp said in a statement.

The Chinese government has blocked access to a Web site used as a conduit for donations to President Obama’s re-election, The Post has learned. The action comes following a report in Sunday’s Post that the Obama.com site had been registered to Robert Roche, an Obama campaign bundler who lives and works in China. An analysis by the Government Accountability Institute found that Obama.com gets almost half its traffic from foreign computer addresses. GAI sources used more than 100 different Chinese proxies to get on Obama.com. Each time, the effort produced an “error” message that is consistent with sites blocked by the Chinese government.

Washington - The black mold creeping into the spines of hundreds of people who got tainted shots for back pain marks uncharted medical territory. Never before has this particular fungus been found to cause meningitis. It's incredibly hard to diagnose, and to kill — requiring at least three months of a treatment that can cause hallucinations. There's no good way to predict survival, or when it's safe to stop treating, or exactly how to monitor those who fear the fungus may be festering silently in their bodies. Greensboro - Ford Motor Co. (F) and Dow Chemical Co. (DOW) joined a growing number of companies firing thousands of workers as sluggish U.S. growth and Europe’s deepening recession lead to a persisting slump in sales. North American companies have announced plans to eliminate more than 62,600 positions at home and abroad since Sept. 1, the biggest two-month drop since the start of 2010, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Firings total 158,100 so far this year, more than the 129,000 job cuts in the same period in 2011.

So.... Colin Powell, fulminating about the economy (as if he is an expert on that!) and avoiding all discussion of the incompetence and dishonesty of the Obama administration's handling of Libya, has endorsed Barack Obama again. Gee, what a surprise. This is a man still playing out his personal picque at some imagined sleights during the administration of Bush 43. But this is a man without honor. This is a man who allowed the spending of millions of dollars in a witch-hunt of a law-enforcement investigation even while personally knowing that his own top aide had been the one

In September, the number of signers of the Giving Pledge (founded by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates) grew by 11, to a new total of 92. That's impressive—92 billionaires each promising (some co-signing with their spouse) to give away at least half of their fortune to charity. But forget about the raw numbers. The most interesting thing about the expanded list is one of its new members: With the addition of Peter Benjamin Lewis, the 78-year-old chairman of Cleveland auto-insurer Progressive (PGR), this assembly of very rich and philanthropic souls got its most eccentric participant. Don't even think

Kabul, Afghanistan - A man in an Afghan police uniform shot and killed two American service members Thursday, the U.S. military said, in what appeared to be the latest in a rash of attacks on international forces this year by their Afghan partners. Why is Mitt Romney rising? Americans who watched the GOP nominee debate President Obama never met the cold, greedy, sexist, racist, carcinogenic tax cheat that Team Obama promised would appear. The calm, steady, and reasonable gentleman who opposed Obama was no Gordon Gekko. Americans might like Romney even more if they understood his random acts of kindness and significant feats of bravery.

RICHMOND, Va. -- President Barack Obama phoned Colin Powell Thursday to thank him for endorsing him for a second term, a White House official said. Powell, the former Secretary of State under Republican president George W. Bush, endorsed Obama in 2008 and told CBS in an interview Thursday morning that he still supports him. "The president is very appreciative of the endorsement," White House spokesman Dan Pfeiffer told reporters on a plane ride from Tampa, Florida, where Obama held a rally. "He called Colin Powell this morning before the event to thank him." The president did not discuss

Washington - Orders for business equipment such as computers and communications gear stalled in September, signaling a slowdown in investment that may curb U.S. economic growth. Bookings for non-defense capital goods excluding aircraft, considered a proxy for future spending, were little changed after rising 0.2 percent in August, a Commerce Department report showed today in Washington. Other data showed consumer confidence is climbing even as the labor market makes limited progress.

Emergency management teams and utilities along the East Coast are bracing for what could be a $1 billion punch as Hurricane Sandy's 100 mph winds barrel toward the heavily populated region between the Carolina coast and Cape Cod. The Category 2 storm, which has killed two in the Caribbean as it swept through Cuba and blew toward the Bahamas, may combine with other, rain-heavy weather systems to create what meteorologists are calling a "perfect storm" that could wreak havoc from North Carolina to Massachusetts early next week. Sandy will likely maintain its hurricane status as it passes over the Bahamas

A new Associated Press/GfK poll released Thursday shows some disconcerting signs for President Barack Obama just 12 days before Election Day. Republican nominee Mitt Romney has flipped two crucial issues in the poll and is gaining in another measure, driving an overall 47% to 45% lead among likely voters. (Snip) Among registered voters, Obama has lost 13 and 10 points to Romney on the two issues, according to the poll. The flips are significant. A recent Gallup poll showed the overall economy (plus unemployment) and the federal deficit remain the top two issues for voters this election.
