North Sea oil and gas is set to be expanded after the Government offered more than 160 new production licenses for companies hoping to explore the area. Energy Minister John Hayes announced the expansion of plans offering companies the opportunity to explore the North Sea. The licences cover 33 'blocks' or areas of the sea and if completed would represent a sharp increase in the amount of exploration carried out. There are concerns over the the environmental effects of oil exploration on the flora and fauna in the North Sea as a further 61 blocks are still being assessed for Source name corrected by staff

Obama’s Immigration Boast: Now that the President has lifted his “off the record” restriction on his Des Moines Register interview, we can read this exciting paragraph: The second thing I’m confident we’ll get done next year is immigration reform. And since this is off the record, I will just be very blunt. Should I win a second term, a big reason I will win a second term is because the Republican nominee and the Republican Party have so alienated the fastest-growing demographic group in the country, the Latino community. And this is a relatively new phenomenon.

As the polls have tightened over the past few weeks, Barack Obama has relied on his overwhelming advantage among women to retain a slim lead over Mitt Romney. But now the Republican challenger has wiped out the President's 16-point lead among female voters entirely, according to a new poll by the Associated Press. Coupled with a boost in Obama's standing among men, the latest polls suggest that what was on track to be a historically large gender gap could have been completely eliminated. Those churning gender dynamics leave the presidential race a virtual dead heat, with Romney favored by

The race for Ohio is slowly tightening, but Mitt Romney does not hold a lead in a single poll in the current Real Clear Politics average (he is tied in two). Two polls from Time and CBS/Quinnipiac have grabbed headlines by showing Obama a five-point lead in each. Romney is chipping away at Obama’s poll lead, but the Democratic advantage in party-ID has increased across these polls. When looking at the polls in Ohio, it is becoming entirely possible that Mitt Romney should be able to win Ohio without

For somebody who claims to be known as a ‘firecracker’, Maureen Sullivan is a woman who has been burned more than her fair share. Aged 61, she has been swindled out of $168,000 by a conman, lost a $5m fortune and missed out on a stock market jackpot worth double that. She has gone bankrupt with just $50 in her hand, been sued for defamation and had a string of toyboys, one of whom got her name tattooed on his right arm as a token of his devotion.

Deconstructionist culture warriors of the left continue their relentless assault on western civilization. It’s impossible to cover it all in a weekly, 800-word column, so here are just a few tidbits. A new California law outlawed therapy to help people overcome same-sex attraction. Signing the bill, Governor “Moonbeam” Brown declared: “These practices have no basis in science or medicine.” Reparative therapy, as it’s sometimes called by conservative therapists, starts with the premise that homosexuality is, as Catholic Church puts it: “intrinsically disordered.” It’s not normal.

We acknowledge Your Judgment upon our country. You have pulled back because we have removed You from our schools, and court rooms, and public forums. You have allowed godless leaders to assume positions of leadership in all institutions. God deliver us now. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said she will serve only one term. But in a new interview with The Wall Street Journal, she suggested it was possible — if “unlikely” — that she would stay in the post a bit longer. “A lot of people have talked to me about staying,” Mrs. Clinton said, declining to be more specific. When asked if current events will force her departure date to slip, she said it was “unlikely,” but for the first time left open that possibility for the short term.

U.S. Rep. James P. Moran’s son Patrick resigned from his father’s campaign after being caught on camera earlier this month appearing to give advice on how to commit voter fraud to a conservative video journalist. Project Veritas, the group headed by conservative activist James O'Keefe, circulated the video Wednesday. Patrick Moran, who had been serving as his father’s field director, said in a statement that he never took the person videotaping him seriously and was simply humoring him.

It's understandable for Barack Obama and Joe Biden to be flustered after dropping a king's ransom to demolish Mitt Romney and his candidacy. And then to find the Republican and his annoyingly fit VP partner not only unflustered but tied or leading polls in numerous crucial places with but 12 days left.[Snip] Meanwhile Barack the Barnstormer and Joe the Jester were on the stumps Wednesday. Trouble was neither seemed to know where he was. In Colorado, Obama was touting his record and vague plans for future good things. "I want to build on the progress we’ve made doubling clean

It's almost certain that President Obama released his agenda, titled "The New Economic Patriotism," the night before a Donald Trump blockbuster announcement designed to derail Obama's reelection. He had to have been hoping dearly the Trump stink-bomb would take all the oxygen away from any second-day stories about the "plan for jobs and middle-class security" the campaign published. It's not just that the plan is the first voters have heard of any Obama has for his second term — two weeks before Election Day — but that the brochure is about as cheesy a cheap shot as they come.

Media Bias: What kind of person would call for manipulation of markets to fool the press into thinking his candidate was in the lead? A sleazy politico? Nope. Try Ezra Klein, a Washington Post writer. Wow. 'If I ran a campaign, I'd have people make big buys on InTrade after debates, conventions, etc. in order to persuade press that we won," tweeted Klein on his Twitter account Tuesday. Such underhanded thinking might be recognizable coming from a nasty political operative alongside advice on how to stuff ballot boxes or intimidate voters.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, a Republican who served under George W. Bush, declared his support for a second term of President Barack Obama."I voted for him in 2008, and I plan to stick with him in 2012," Powell said Thursday during an interview with CBS's "This Morning." "I'll be voting for he and for Vice President Joe Biden next month." Powell said he believed Obama's economic policies were helpful in turning around the sluggish economy and he criticized Republican challenger Mitt Romney's stance on foreign policy. Former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on Thursday endorsed Barack Obama in his bid for re-election, citing the Democratic president's efforts to wind down the war in Afghanistan and tackling terrorism. "And so I think we ought to keep on the track that we are on," the Republican, who also backed Obama in 2008, told "CBS This Morning." The move comes just days after Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney clashed over foreign policy in the third and last presidential debate ahead of the November 6 election.

President Obama offered a clever retort to Donald Trump after the real estate mogul offered to donate $5million to the charity of his choosing if he released college records and passport application. Speaking on The Tonight Show, Obama told Jay Leno that the rivalry between began in their childhood. ‘This all dates back to when we were growing up in Kenya,' he joked. 'We had constant run-ins on the soccer field, he wasn’t very good.’ The president was referring to The Donald's highly publicised demands that the president present his birth certificate

Straight from the heart of the auto bailout, and the city Mitt Romney once said should go bankrupt, the Detroit News endorses... Mitt Romney. In that context, these lines may be the hardest for President Obama's supporters to bear, even if the paper did endorse Sen. John McCain in 2008 and has long gone Republican: A country built on rugged individualism finds itself increasingly under the thumb of a federal government that is ever expanding its reach into the lives of its citizens.

Seeing Mitt Romney and Barack Obama side by side in the recent debates, it hit me who they are. They're the two prototypical guys nearly every one of us women has encountered in our romantic lives: the Boy Scout and the Bad Boy; Mr. Clean-Cut, and Mr. Mystery. Maybe they're guys we dated in high school or fantasized about. Or later in life, they're the two boyfriends who tugged at our hearts, rivals for our affection but opposites in every conceivable way. Ultimately the one we chose predicted our grown-up woman futures

In a previously off-the-record interview with the Des Moines Register, President Obama argued that the economic recovery he's overseen isn't as bad as his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, claims. "In many ways, because of the actions we took early on, we're actually ahead of pace in the typical recovery out of a recession like this," Obama said.[snip] But the data are clear that Obama's economic recovery — which started in June 2009, five months after he was sworn in — has been worse than any recovery since the Great Depression.

Sven Yrvind is willing to pay a big price for some alone time. The Swedish sailor wants to cruise nonstop around the world by himself in a sailboat slightly larger than a bathtub. Armed with a stack of books and 880 pounds of mainly sardines and granola, the 73-year-old seasoned boat builder plans to wedge inside what he affectionately calls a "survival capsule," and spend up to a year-and-a-half reading, writing, thinking and soaking up the wonders of nature. Mr. Yrvind is knee deep in the building of his boat.

Calling someone a liar is a serious accusation. This is why, aside from the unwritten contract allowing for mutual prevarication, politicians are so reluctant to do it. And not just anyone is a liar. Legend has it that our first president said, "I cannot tell a lie," but, being only human, G.W. no doubt could and certainly did, at some point. A liar, however, is someone who lives and breathes the lie; someone who specializes in the art of artifice; someone to whom lying is his first recourse, not his last. Such a man is Barack Obama.

During the Civil War, when the union's preservation and slavery's abolition were in doubt, President Lincoln roused the nation with his dream “of a place and a time where America will once again be seen as the last best hope of earth.” In rekindling our founders' vision, Lincoln helped assure that America would become the freest and most prosperous nation on earth, a status that successive U.S. presidents have dutifully maintained, or they were cast aside by voters. As Americans Think Again about President Obama, consider that no president has won re-election amid such economic stagnation, declining incomes, high gas

CBS News has released a clip of an interview by Steve Kroft of 60 Minutes on Sep. 12 with President Barack Obama that indicates Obama knew the assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya was a premeditated terror attack--and suggests the White House later deceived the public by blaming protests against an anti-Islam video. CBS chose not to air the clip for over a month--but did air Obama’s attack on Romney that same night.Obama told Kroft that the attack in Benghazi was different from the violent protest at the U.S. embassy in Cairo: "You're right that this is not a situation that was
