Romney Tonight, Part II

Well, it looks like Romney took my advice (no not literally). In boxing terms, Romney went for a clinch. While Obama constantly tried to push Romney off to start a real fight and heighten the contrast. In other words, Obama behaved like a challenger in trouble and Romney acted liked a candidate with something to lose. That tells you something about the poll numbers both of these guys are looking at. And while I obviously think Romney followed the right strategy, I have to say I wish he’d broken out of the clinch a couple times to land

Petulant, Perturbed Obama

As with the vice-presidential debate and Joe Biden, Barack Obama's attitude in Monday night's debate spoke more clearly than anything he said. No, he didn't laugh like Bozo the Clown, giggle like a schoolgirl, shake his head, and roll his eyes like Jokin' Joe did. But he looked petulant, perturbed, and on edge (and was occasionally rude) throughout much of the night, despite three days of debate preparation at Camp David. It seems Barack Obama just can't help himself. It wasn't that he was under withering attack by Mitt Romney. In fact, I was struck by how Romney opened

Obama Wins Third Debate but

Mitt Romney wins. That’s not to say he won Monday night’s debate or the presidential campaign, but it’s safe to say he won an important chapter: the debate season. With an acceptable, though far from exceptional, performance in his third and final face-off with President Obama, the former Massachusetts governor became one of the few presidential candidates to make debates matter. Bottom line: Obama won Monday night’s debate on points, benefiting from the blessings of incumbency and hard-world experience. But the challenger held his own, and thus the state of the race is likely unchanged.

Steve Emerson and John Rossomondo have studied White House visitor logs, and compared them to lists of known radical extremists. Perhaps tonight President Obama could explain why there's such a significant overlap: S]cores of known radical Islamists made hundreds of visits to the Obama White House, meeting with top administration officials. Court documents and other records have identified many of these visitors as belonging to groups serving as fronts for the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas and other Islamic militant organizations. The [Investigative Projecton Terrorism] made the discovery combing through millions of White House visitor log entries. IPT compared the visitors' names

Political incumbents struggling to crack 47% within a couple of weeks of the reckoning day tend to fall. Voters claiming to be undecided have often already decided, they’re just waiting to see if the challenger stumbles or the incumbent somehow pulls out a miracle. Coming into the third presidential debate, President Barack Obama struggled to crack 47% everywhere while some polls have put former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s support as high as 52% nationally. The trends nationally and in the swing states have all run in Romney’s favor since the first debate. The second debate was marred

President Obama and Governor Romney battled to a draw on foreign policy points tonight, with each candidate scoring on several lines. As expected, the discussion meandered into domestic policy for a large portion of the evening, and both men came prepared with a flurry of talking points. Romney needed to strike casual viewers are informed, poised, and plausible as president. He accomplished that task, without question. The president often seemed like the aggressor, hammering his challenger in almost every answer he gave. Romney coolly chided Obama, explaining that attacking him (especially dishonestly) doesn't advance any solutions.

Former Clinton strategist Paul Begala, an adviser to the super-PAC aiding President Obama's reelection efforts, said Monday that it appeared that the president had given up on North Carolina. Begala was asked whether the president had essentially conceded the state to GOP challenger Mitt Romney, and responded flatly with a "yes" during an appearance Monday on CNN. "I'm not supposed to say that," Begala continued, after a beat. "I'm working for the pro-Obama super-PAC, so I'm being paid to help re-elect the president, but if you look at where he's spending money, it looks like Gov. Romney is likely to

If I didn’t have to watch this debate for work, I would have watched something else. Foreign policy can be a fascinating topic to discuss, but the instincts of the voters in play – populist, anti-China, quasi-isolationist, disinterested in the details of policy – and the interests of both men – Romney wanting to keep appearing presidential, the president desperately needing some knockout punch, both eager to sneak in points about the economy – made for an excruciating evening of dueling talking points. I think Romney’s answers were tailor-made to wow a focus group, and I don’t mean that

Kicking off the final debate before the presidential election, President Obama and Mitt Romney exchanged harsh words tonight over the best path for guiding American foreign policy, with Mr. Obama accusing Romney of "wrong and reckless leadership" and Romney targeting the president over his vision for the Middle East. In an aggressive attack of his rival right out of the gate, Mr. Obama attempted to undermine Romney's record on Iraq and Afghanistan, which he cast as muddled and inconsistent, and called for "strong and steady leadership, not wrong and reckless leadership that is all over the map." US President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney have battled over national security, in the third and final presidential debate. The rivals tangled over the Arab Spring, Iran, China's rise and more in a feisty 90-minute head-to-head. Mr Obama said his challenger was "all over the map" on foreign policy, while Mr Romney said the president had failed to uphold American global leadership.[Snip] Mr Romney highlighted civilian deaths in Syria, the Muslim Brotherhood taking power in Egypt, the rise of al-Qaeda affiliates in North Africa, Iran's nuclear programme, and last month's Libya US consulate attack as examples

A forceful President Barack Obama put Republican challenger Mitt Romney on the defensive on foreign policy issues on Monday night, scoring a solid victory in their third and final debate just 15 days before Election Day. Obama displayed the experience of a commander-in-chief in explaining U.S. policy under his leadership and attacking the views and proposals of Romney, a former Massachusetts governor with little experience on overseas issues. Romney ended up supporting most of the Obama administration's steps involving hotspots, like the civil war in Syria, and preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, giving the president the advantage in

Mitt Romney and Barack Obama renewed their personal hostilities against east other tonight during explosive exchanges over foreign affairs in the final presidential debate. A sarcastic President appeared to patronise his rival on many occasions, accusing his plan for overseas policy being ‘all over the map’, ‘wrong and reckless’ and in one taunt claimed that Romney thought of the military ‘like a game of Battleships’. But Romney held his own in the face of Obama's relentless assaults, establishing his credentials as a statesman with an obviously well-briefed analysis of world events, from Iran to Poland to Mali. The final presidential debate is over, and Mitt Romney played it very safe. The Republican candidate has had a relatively unremarkable debate, devoid of any major flubs, but also lacking in memorable attack lines or zingers against President Barack Obama. Romney has missed several opportunities to hit his opponent head on, including on the issue of Libya, a flashpoint among conservatives and a rare area of vulnerability in the Obama administration's foreign policy. A son of the late Sen Robert F. Kennedy was acting on instinct when he kicked a nurse as she tried to stop him from taking his newborn son out of the hospital, a defense lawyer said in court on Monday. In opening statements at Douglas Kennedy's harassment and child endangerment trial, attorney Celia Gordon said Kennedy 'just wanted to take his baby out for some fresh air' on January 7 at Northern Westchester Hospital. Nurses overreacted abrasively, she said, leading to a scuffle. But prosecutor Amy Puerto said Kennedy had to be stopped because he was violating hospital policy.

President Obama’s campaign has received $4.5 million in online donations from people who claim to live in zip codes that don’t exist in the United States, according to a new report that raises the possibility that the campaign’s lax online security requirements is allowing foreign donors to contribute illegally. “During calendar year 2012, the Obama campaign received at least $4,580,805.35 from donors who did not submit a ZIP code, or submitted one that does not exist,” the Government Accountability Institute announced in a report after reviewing FEC records. That figure is 16 times the amount that Mitt Romney

WASHINGTON- Voters care much less about global problems than they do about the economy, but Monday's debate on foreign policy still matters in a way that could tilt the election. This is the night for President Barack Obama and rival Mitt Romney to leave a lasting impression about leadership. Obama will be the only commander in chief on stage, and if he loses the edge and aura in the final debate, it could hurt him on Election Day. All the discussion of Iran, Libya and al-Qaida is bound to stick less than the sense it portrays of which man

During the last administration, CBS anchor Bob Schieffer was a red-hot advocate of closing the terrorist holding pen at Guantanamo. "This is just a boil. It's a cancer. This thing is not doing anybody any good,” he ranted on MSNBC’s Imus In The Morning show on June 9, 2005. Schieffer’s ardor cooled considerably once Obama was elected. Will Schieffer bring up the “cancer” of Gitmo in tonight’s debate? Back in the Bush years, he repeatedly suggested it made us just like the terrorists we were fighting. With the polls moving against President Obama both nationally and in the swing states, all the pressure is on him in tonight’s debate to project American strength on foreign policy. Polls show that in the aftermath of the devastating murders of our ambassador to Libya and three other Americans, the American people are interested in a Reaganesque foreign policy. And Obama’s foreign policy is anything but. According to the latest Pew Research Center polls, Americans are increasingly skeptical about the crown jewel of the Obama Doctrine: the Arab Spring.
