Will Schieffer Ask Obama

During the last administration, CBS anchor Bob Schieffer was a red-hot advocate of closing the terrorist holding pen at Guantanamo. "This is just a boil. It's a cancer. This thing is not doing anybody any good,” he ranted on MSNBC’s Imus In The Morning show on June 9, 2005. Schieffer’s ardor cooled considerably once Obama was elected. Will Schieffer bring up the “cancer” of Gitmo in tonight’s debate? Back in the Bush years, he repeatedly suggested it made us just like the terrorists we were fighting. Here’s how the Imus rant continued:

BOCA RATON, FLA. — Hours before President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney square off in the third and final presidential debate, former George W. Bush press secretary and CNN contributor Ari Fleischer said he sees the race breaking Romney’s way. “I think the potential for one candidate to have a larger win is Romney’s, it’s not President Obama’s,” Fleischer told The Daily Caller in the media area at Lynn University, the site of Monday night’s final presidential debate. “I could see Romney winning by three or four points. If the president wins, he is going to win

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Weeks before the final tally, is North Carolina settled in the presidential election? After confirming reports that they pulled some resources out of the state to concentrate on more hotly contested battlegrounds, Republicans have shown no signs of closing up shop or cutting back on get-out-the vote events. Doubtful Democrats – touting a strong ground game — say the GOP announcement, coming coincidentally on the first day of early voting in North Carolina, may be a bit of gamesmanship, an effort to depress the Democratic vote and President Obama’s supporters

Of the four most recent Ohio polls, two have the race tied, one has O up by a single point, and the other you already know about. An interesting tidbit from the new Suffolk poll: They’ve got Romney up three points among people who haven’t voted yet and Obama up 13 points among those who already have. That’s not surprising given how hard O’s been pushing people to vote early (Snip) As it is, those persuadables are most likely now holding off in order to take a longer look at Romney, which means virtually all of O’s early votes are

With the polls moving against President Obama both nationally and in the swing states, all the pressure is on him in tonight’s debate to project American strength on foreign policy. Polls show that in the aftermath of the devastating murders of our ambassador to Libya and three other Americans, the American people are interested in a Reaganesque foreign policy. And Obama’s foreign policy is anything but. According to the latest Pew Research Center polls, Americans are increasingly skeptical about the crown jewel of the Obama Doctrine: the Arab Spring. In April 2011, 42 percent of Americans thought that “changes in

It’s comforting to know that some people and things never change. Like the Rev. Billy Graham. Ah yes, the Rev. Graham. He was a phony 50 years ago – the columnist Chuck Stone back then called him not just a phony but a “magnificent phony” – and he’s a phony today. (Snip) Now, hallelujah, it seems that the Rev. Graham has found his voice again. Sitting up in his mountainous Montreat retreat clothed in mock-humility, Graham at 93 continues to play kingmaker. He has met with 12 U.S. presidents and God-only-knows how many would-be presidents, counseling them

Events in Afghanistan continue to confirm that the plan to impose American values through the force of arms and flow of American dollars is truly a pipe dream. In the heartland of the Taliban it is regularly taken for granted that Western notions of human rights are dismissed as an attempt to foist Christian values on a Muslim nation. Now, the reprehensible murder of a young bride is the latest fact emphasizing the systemic disregard for the rights of women in Afghanistan. A 20-year-old woman identified as Mahgul lived in Herat in western Afghanistan. Her brief life came to its

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa subpoenaed the Obama administration Monday for documents he believes will expose Medicare malfeasance by Department of Health and Human Services officials. The move, confirmed by an aide to the California Republican, makes good on a threat Issa issued last week, when he demanded reams of data from HHS by 5 p.m. on Thursday. Although the agency dumped 1,300 pages at his doorstep just before the deadline, he contended that the information was garbled and unresponsive to his request.

Senator John McCain, who lost the 2008 election to President Barack Obama, has given a withering critique of his foreign policy just hours before the third and final debate. McCain said four years of "failed leadership" by President Obama has dragged the Middle East to the edge of a major crisis that could dramatically destabilise the region. In the days before the first debate in Denver, President Obama held more than a four-point lead in the Real Clear Politics average, and Romney had been left for dead by most of the media. Then the debate came, and overnight Romney seemingly rid himself of the weaknesses that had been tacked on to him by over $100 million dollars in negative advertising. Now here we are a few weeks later with a dead heat in nationwide polls.

It took just 5 weeks for American precision guided bombs and Special Forces on horseback to chase the Taliban from power. It added that while his opponents assailed him as a socialist, "he showed himself to be an adult, less an ideologue than a pragmatist, more cautious than cocky."

Romney leads 48-45 overall in the poll, a boost from a one-point advantage in a poll taken right after the first debate. Among likely voters, Romney has swung the race 6 points from a month ago. Mitt Romney’s hopes have long hinged on the notion of a tipping point. He would clear some psychic threshold necessary to be embraced as an acceptable alternative to Barack Obama in the minds of persuadable voters, then see national public opinion swing swiftly in his favor. With 15 days to go in the election, there is some evidence Romney’s scenario is coming true. (Snip) Once voters see Romney as something different than the Obama caricature, the reasoning goes, they simply won’t buy the president’s argument going forward. One piece of evidence for this possibility is that Romney’s momentum, which began

The Obama administration’s handling of the terrorist attack in Libya has shaken the presidential race and raised the importance of Monday night’s clash over foreign policy. The killing of a U.S. ambassador for the first time in 33 years has all but erased Obama's once considerable lead on foreign policy and shaken up the race with just two weeks to go. (Snip) Recent polling by Pew shows President Obama is vulnerable on the issue: His once comfortable 15-point lead over Republican Mitt Romney on foreign policy has evaporated by 11 points since the attack.

The story has been interpreted (and reinterpreted) with respect to its utility to the president before tonight’s foreign policy debate depending on the perceived nature of the leaks. So when the story first broke, it was assumed the Obama administration thought this would be politically beneficial on the eve of the debate. The Romney camp and GOP operatives on the ground in key swing states think the wind is at their back. A senior Republican told me Sunday night that Mitt Romney is up by two to three points in Virginia, which President Obama won by nearly seven points in 2008. That is consistent with public polling since early October. This Republican expects Romney to keep Obama’s lead in populous Fairfax County below 100,000 (in 2008 Obama racked up a 110,000-vote advantage in Fairfax and won the state by more than 230,000 votes). Republicans are optimistic Romney can carry the exurb

All the pieces fit, so why do historians and biographers ignore the question. As president, Barack Obama is many things -- many unprecedented things. There's the commendable: the truly historic achievement (with apologies to Bill Clinton) of being the first black president. There's the dubious: the lamentable distinction (christened by Newt Gingrich) of being the first "food stamp president." But here's an intriguing, provocative thought: Is Barack Obama our first "Red Diaper Baby" president? Gee, that would be unprecedented. Now, before deeming the question over-the-top, out-of-bounds,

According to the just published fundraising report for the last quarter, going through September,
