Caterpillar says the world’s economy is weaker than it thought, and it doesn’t expect growth to pick up until the second half of next year. The Peoria-based company on Monday cut its 2012 revenue and profit guidance, and took a very cautious view toward its performance in 2013. Caterpillar makes the yellow-painted excavators, heavy tractors, and other construction equipment often seen on road-building projects. It’s the world’s largest maker of construction and mining equipment, and also makes engines. Its results are watched closely for signs of where the broader economy is headed.

New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg is supporting Senator Scott Brown for his moderation, but the vociferous defender of Wall Street used some of the strongest language of the campaign to describe Democratic Elizabeth Warren -- comparing her philosophy with Soviet communism. The comments were published in The New York Times’s The Caucus blog on Sunday, based on a Friday interview Bloomberg gave to the paper. “You can question whether he’s too conservative,” Bloomberg said. “You can question, in my mind, whether she’s God’s gift to regulation, close the banks and get rid of corporate profits, and we’d all bring

L'Aquila, Italy - An Italian court convicted seven scientists and experts of manslaughter on Monday for failing to adequately warn citizens before an earthquake struck central Italy in 2009, killing more than 300 people. The court in L'Aquila also sentenced the defendants to six years in prison. Each one is a member of the national Great Risks Commission. In Italy, convictions aren't definitive until after at least one level of appeals, so it is unlikely any of the defendants would face jail immediately. Scientists worldwide had decried the trial as ridiculous, contending that science has no reliable way of predicting Author's name added by staff.

As the month of October progressed in the prosperous year of 1962, the country was preparing for Halloween, harvesting the last of the crops, attending football games, and getting ready for winter. It seemed a peaceful time, at least by Cold War standards. But unknown to the public—and certainly unknown to this 18-year-old freshman at Vanderbilt University—the greatest crisis of the Cold War was brewing.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said a recent New York Times report that said Iran and the US were holding direct one-on-one talks on Tehran's nuclear program did not point to an important development. Speaking to the 103 FM radio station, the defense minister said, "There either were or weren't contacts... the US is working to stop Iran." He added, however, that "this [claims of direct negotiations] is not such an important thing, and perhaps it's not even such an important report," since Iran has been deceiving Western powers for years while proceeding to enrich uranium.

Jerusalem - Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said Monday during a visit to Jerusalem that the prospect of an Israel-Palestinian peace accord is "vanishing," blaming Israeli settlement of the West Bank. Carter, a longtime critic of Israeli policies, called the current situation "catastrophic" and blamed Israel for the growing isolation of east Jerusalem from the West Bank. He said a Palestinian state has become "unviable." (Snip) But they didn't meet with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. Carter said that the delegation didn't request a meeting because they haven't been granted meetings on previous visits.q

A walk through the RealClearPolitics average of polls is an exploration of parallel universes. This morning, the overall RCP average shows a tied race between Obama and Romney. While this itself is an ominous sign for Obama's chances at reelection, his actual standing is likely far weaker. Propping him up are a gaggle of polls, led by Investors' Business Daily, that are clinging to fantasies about Democrat turnout. Factoring into the RCP average are three media polls showing Obama with a 3-point national lead over Romney. These polls are sponsored by ABC/Washington Post, the Hartford Courant, and Investors' Business Daily,

The latest polling of likely voters by Rasmussen Reports shows that, for the first time, Mitt Romney has hit 50 percent support in Colorado — a state that Barack Obama won by 9 percentage points (54 to 45 percent) in 2008. Romney now leads Obama by 4 percentage points in the Centennial State — 50 to 46 percent. He leads by 8 points (49 to 41 percent) among independents. Colorado is a rather crucial and somewhat underrated state on the electoral map. If Romney wins in Ohio, then Colorado might be sufficient to put him over

Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts has banned a Christian group from campus because the group requires student leaders to adhere to "basic biblical truths of Christianity." The decision to ban the group, called the Tufts Christian Fellowship, was made by officials from the university's student government, specifically the Tufts Community Union Judiciary. The ban means the group "will lose the right to use the Tufts name in its title or at any activities, schedule events or reserve university space through the Office for Campus Life," according to the Tufts Daily. The cost to taxpayers for the failure of solar panel company Solyndra may be much higher than the $535 million dollar federal loan guarantee the company received. After the company went bankrupt in last August, 2011, the Energy Department, which had given the original loan, okayed an unprecedented deal to attract more private investment to Solyndra. One result of this deal is that it has allowed more than $350 million in tax write-offs to pass to those private creditors, one of which is owned by a major donor to President Obama. Controversial as ever, Louis Farrakhan praised failed presidential candidate Ron Paul Sunday for wanting to close U.S. military bases overseas and slash financial aid to Israel — and blasted the frontrunners for failing to take stronger positions to curb the national debt. The 79-year-old leader of the Chicago-based Nation of Islam gave a fiery three-hour talk to the congregation of his South Side mosque. His lecture — billed as “Guidance for our president and our nation” — weaved his musings on the Nov. 6 election with inflammatory views on Jews, gays and white supremacy.

A group of Louisiana State University football fans whose admiration for the Tigers is second only to their love for Jesus is outraged after the school digitally erased the tiny crosses they painted on their bare upper chests at a recent football game. LSU officials sent out a photo of The Painted Posse, Christian students who paint their bodies with LSU school colors and small crosses for home games, in an email about the LSU game against South Carolina on Oct. 13. The students were shocked to see the photo, which appeared to be otherwise untouched,

I have watched every minute of the first two presidential debates. And I had planned to watch every minute of the third one -- until the Cardinals lost on Sunday night, forcing a game 7 of the National League Championship Series. Are you torn for tonight's TV choices, or is it simple for you? Will you flip to the debate between innings, or watch the debate and catch up on the game later? TV ratings for the Cardinal games have been strong, and St. Louis is a baseball town.

SAN ANTONIO –Three San Antonio real estate developers will break ground next month on the Live Oak Railroad, hoping to snag a slice of a South Texas Eagle Ford shale rail boom. Live Oak Railroad aims to open by late March 2013 south of Three Rivers in Live Oak County, with 28,000 feet of track along the Union Pacific line. Plans call for it to serve as a liquids terminal for natural gas and crude oil. The project is being driven by oil and gas production in the Eagle Ford Shale, a 20-county swath of the state that stretches from

President Obama appears to getting reelection support from three world leaders notorious for their anti-American views. Venezuela President Hugo Chavez, after winning a fourth term earlier this month, reportedly said he would vote for Obama and that the president would likely vote for him. The socialist-leaning ruler also reportedly called Obama a “good guy.” His support follows that of the Castro family, which has ruled Cuba under a communist dictatorship for more than 50 years. In June, Mariela Castro, the daughter of Cuban President Raul Castro, said in a CNN interview, translated into English:

Disgraced ex-CBS anchor Dan Rather delved into conspiracy theories on Monday, speculating that the Ohio Republican Party could steal the election for Mitt Romney. In a Facebook posting for Dan Rather Report, the journalist speculated, "The whole upper tier of Ohio state government is in the hands of the GOP now; in very close voting they have the power to influence what votes are counted and how." Linking back to other conspiracy theories, Rather reminded, "Remember Ohio, Bush v. Kerry in 2004 and Florida, Bush v. Gore in 2000)." The former CBS Evening News host seemed to be echoing

(snip)Christie riled up the Richmond crowd saying that Obama is arrogant for believing he can’t change Washington politics. “If he believes that, then what the hell is he doing asking for another four years?” Christie said. “We’re happy to give you a bus ticket to the outside, Mr. President.” Christie added that Obama is “blindly walking around the White House looking for a clue.”

The 2012 presidential election is still more than two weeks away, but on Friday a CBS News affiliate in Arizona called the race for President Barack Obama. For 17 seconds, Phoenix, Arizona CBS News affiliate KPHO ran a lower third graphic that showed that Obama had won the Nov. 6 election over Gov. Mitt Romney with 99% of the precincts reporting. The lower third graphic appeared around 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 19, during an episode of “The People’s Court.” The CBS News graphic showed Obama winning the election with 43 percent of the vote nationwide

Andrew Breitbart had a way of getting under the Left's skin. The late media mogul understood how liberals worked in tandem with the mainstream media to push their preferred narratives. So both progressives and reporters alike hated Andrew with a passion. It's why "Hating Breitbart" is such an apt name for the new documentary capturing the late conservative leader's work. Patrons to a D.C.-area movie theater this weekend got a 3D-style experience while watching "Hating Breitbart." Not only was The Huffington Post's Ryan Clayton

He does not speak on the stump or appear in television ads. Campaign audiences rarely hear his name. But aside from President Obama and Mitt Romney, no one has shaped the 2012 election more than George W. Bush — on the economy and on the foreign policy issues in the spotlight during the final presidential debate on Monday. For Mr. Romney, the battered reputation of Mr. Bush, the last Republican president, represents a burden to minimize in a tight race for the White House. The two have not appeared together this year.

That’s the tag line to a tough new ad the Obama campaign is airing in Ohio. But it is one that, ironically, echoes a slogan that has been used as a racial code over the last half century or more. The context of the ad is very different from the one in which the phrase “one of us” was used to divide the country along racial lines, but Conservative commentators quickly seized on it.Obama’s critics said the fact that he would use such loaded language in the hard-fought race to win Ohio shows
