Romney, Obama aides clash
over Iran talks
Los Angeles Times, by Christi Parsons    Original Article
Posted By: JoniTx- 10/21/2012 3:17:06 PM     Post Reply
A top advisor to Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney warned that the Obama administration may be about to “jettison” its international partners as the president contemplates one-on-one talks with Iran over its nuclear weapons program. Obama's side emphasized his commitment to the international coalition that the U.S. has led against Iran and credited the president with bringing worldwide pressure to bear on the Tehran regime. The two sides clashed via representatives on the Sunday morning talk shows as President Obama and Romney prepared for Monday's final campaign debate, which is scheduled to focus on foreign policy.

At least 22 people have died in days of fighting in Libya's town of Bani Walid, state news agency Lana says. It says that some 200 people were injured in the clashes between pro-government militia and gunmen in former leader Muammar Gaddafi's bastion. Libya's new government has struggled to stamp its authority on a country awash with weapons. (Snip) A recording purportedly by Mr Ibrahim later appeared on the internet denying the news. And on Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister Mustafa Abu Shagur said that the announcement about Mr Ibrahim's arrest had been made without confirmation of the news.

It sounds cliched, but it is a truism: America is at a crossroads. It can continue down the path of Leviathan government and an increasing dependence on it, or America can return to the path of limited government and the kind of prosperity-producing independence on which the Founders based this great republic. The choice is yours. Our choice is the latter. And that’s why we enthusiastically endorse Republican Mitt Romney for president of the United States. He’s an exceptionally good and decent man who is a proven leader, administrator and deft politician

A court in Hamburg has handed down prison sentences to 10 Somali pirates who hijacked the German freighter cargo ship MS Taipan in 2010. The trial lasted almost two years, making it one of the longest in postwar German history. It was hampered primarily by linguistic difficulties and problems establishing the age of the defendants. (Snip) "I was born under a tree," one of them had replied when asked about his place of birth. The three youngest were given two-year sentences, while the other seven were given sentences of six to seven years.

The Gazette-Journal recommends a vote for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for president of the United States. It wasn’t an easy decision. A recommendation against an incumbent can’t be taken lightly. President Barack Obama inherited a ghastly mess when he took office in January 2009. He demonstrated a clear understanding in his inaugural address, when he stated, “That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened …”

In Tuesday's debate, Governor Mitt Romney demonstrated the flawed nature of his approach to national security. Instead of outlining a clear and coherent vision of what he would do as commander in chief, he has chosen to attack the administration for alleged weakness. This accusation is based on assertions – that the president has failed to support allies or stand up for America – that are simply not supported by facts. Recall that, on his first day in office, President Obama confronted two hot wars, a persistent terrorist threat, a global economic crisis

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. — not heard from since June — being treated for bipolar disorder and depression — and facing a new federal probe — is sending an automated phone message to his constituents over the weekend, pleading for patience before the election, speaking out about his condition for the first time. “Like many human beings, a series of events came together in my life at the same time and they have been difficult to sort through. I am human. I am doing my best. I am trying to sort through them all,” Jackson says in the call. He

Vice President Joe Biden told supporters the Lilly Ledbetter Act is “not a big deal in terms of equal pay” at a St. Augustine, Fla., campaign event Saturday. Biden: All the Lilly Ledbetter said was if a woman finds out she’s been treated and treated wrongly, cheated in terms of her salary and benefits at work. That she’s able to sue from the moment she finds out. That’s all it said. Because they were locked out they said that if you didn’t learn within two years you were being cheated then you’re out of luck. But we changed the law.

The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee is demanding answers from four senior United States military officers about whether there was advance warning of terrorist threats and the need for greater security prior to last month’s terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. However, an aide to the chairman, Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon, (R., Calif.), said the office of secretary of defense Leon Panetta blocked the senior officers from providing the answers last night. “The chairman is disappointed that the administration won’t respond to this basic request for information,” the aide said.

Paris - France's foreign minister says Iran appears on track to reach the ability to produce a nuclear weapon by the first half of next year. France is one of six countries that have negotiated with Tehran over its nuclear program, which Iran insists is peaceful. Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told Europe-1 radio Sunday that unspecified experts "have established in an absolutely indisputable way" that Iran has compiled a full array of centrifuges that "apparently will allow the ability to go toward possession of the nuclear weapon by the first half of next year, the end of the first half."

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is pushing a scheme that would purport to give an unelected official within the increasingly powerful but unpopular European Union the authority to veto the budgets of elected national governments. If approved, the EU would have more power over its formerly sovereign members than even the U.S. federal government has been able to usurp from American states. Speaking to the German Parliament before an EU summit on October 18, Merkel declared that it was time for the emerging Brussels-based super-state to have even more powers. The revelation comes from a Government Accountability Institute (GAI) report to be issued tomorrow that combed the Federal Election Commission (FEC) data to determine the effectiveness of each campaign’s donation security system. “The use of a robust Address Verification System (AVS) would significantly minimize donations with invalid zip codes from slipping through the net,” said GAI President Peter Schweizer. “When you use your credit card at a pay-at-the-pump gas station, you have to enter your zip code. Republican Mitt Romney has expanded his lead in Gallup's daily tracking poll to 7 points among likely voters, an increase of a point from Saturday. The 52 percent to 45 percent lead matches Romney's largest of the campaign. Other recent polls, including a Wall Street Journal/NBC poll released Sunday, have shown a dead heat between Romney and President Barack Obama. But Gallup continues to trend more in Romney's direction.

Abingdon, Va. - The billboards stand right at the intersection, ugly and jarring in this lovely southern town. “If you voted the last election to prove you weren’t racist, vote this election to prove you’re not an idiot,” reads the largest and most aggressive one. “Our jobs depend on coal. Why does Obama want to take them away?” says another. A third has a smiling Obama cartoon and “His promises = lost jobs” with a picture of a “cancelled” coal miner. Just in case anyone misses the point, a large “Romney/Ryan” sign hangs in the middle.

The undecided New Hampshire voter has just two weeks to answer this question: Why switch from Barack Obama to Mitt Romney? By now the question is easy to answer if one has been listening to the candidates. Barack Obama was in Manchester on Thursday. When he came to Veterans Park in 2008, he sold “hope and change.” He was uplifting, inspiring. Last week, that was gone. In its place was the negativity, the deception, the nastiness that Obama once said he wanted to remove from politics. Obama offered New Hampshire nothing but bitterness and envy. The last U.S. president to attempt transformative social change on the scale attempted by President Barack Obama was Lyndon B. Johnson, who in 1964 launched his Great Society. Times were different then. At the end of Johnson's term, the national debt stood at just $353 billion, representing an annual growth rate during the five-plus years of Johnson's presidency of just over three percent. The nation's debts then were under control. Fair or not, the debt monster since then has grown unimaginably, forcing its harsh reality into every new discussion about federal spending.

Given the final two minutes to speak during Tuesday's second presidential debate, President Barack Obama quickly spotlighted what he said was the key distinction between his re-election candidacy and the campaign of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. "There's a fundamentally different vision about how we move our country forward," Obama said. He's right, and "fundamentally different" is what the nation needs. For that reason, Romney should be elected president on Nov. 6. The slow U.S. economy and its discouragingly high unemployment overshadow the other important issues in this election. Economic recovery must be spurred to a faster pace,

Did you vote for Barack Obama in 2008? A lot of people did – obviously. What a time. There’s still room for improvement, but what a testimony to just how far we as a nation have come in terms of racial harmony, tolerance and diversity. Only decades earlier a man like Barack Obama – a black man – couldn’t even drink from the same water fountain as a white man, let alone become president of the United States.
