The University of Phoenix, the nation’s largest for-profit university, is closing 115 of its brick-and-mortar locations, including 25 main campuses and 90 smaller satellite learning centers. The closings will affect some 13,000 students, about 4 percent of its student body of 328,000. It is also laying off about 800 employees out of a staff of 17,000,(snip)Late last month, Kaplan Higher Education, a division of the Washington Post Company, announced that it was closing nine of its campuses and consolidating four others into nearby locations.

Like individuals, when things go very wrong very fast, presidential campaigns can act irrationally, doing things that are counterproductive. In the frenzy to do something, decisions are rushed and cooler heads are ignored. This happened in 2008 to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) — fly to D.C., stop the campaign, cancel the debate, then start the campaign and do the debate. Now it’s happening to “no drama Obama” and his Chicago and White House staffers. Take Libya. Yesterday, the administration and the campaign fought back against the conclusion that both the president and moderator Candy Crowley had gotten it wrong

What makes Obama angry

For a variety of reasons, President Obama doesn’t do rage. It’s one of the hallmarks of his presidency, much to the consternation of his supporters, who would love nothing more than to see him rhetorically rip apart the Republican opposition on a daily basis. But if you want to get Obama visibly angry, accuse him of playing politics with national security. I first noticed this during a June 8 White House press conference. Obama popped into the briefing room to talk about the headwinds buffeting the economy. In a two-part question about intelligence leaks to the public,

Electric car market is

Washington — The electric vehicle industry is in serious trouble, or at least far behind where its proponents had hoped it would be. On Tuesday, one of the nation's largest electric car battery companies — A123 Systems Inc., which has 1,000 workers and contractors in Michigan — filed for bankruptcy. It has lost $900 million since 2007 amid sluggish electric vehicles sales. After years of promises that electric cars would end the nation's reliance on imported oil, the bad news has been steady in recent weeks, with reports of lagging sales and projects being pushed back.

“Get the transcript,” President Obama replied, as Mitt Romney questioned whether or not the president called the attack in Libya an act of terror. That, according to the Obama campaign, is one of the greatest debate moments in modern history. “Our view is that the president, the back and forth on Libya last night was one of the best moments for the president, one of the best moments in recent debate history,” traveling Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Air Force One yesterday. Transcript of the moment below: MR. ROMNEY: You said in the Rose

Senior Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod on Wednesday blasted Mitt Romney’s record on hiring women when Massachusetts governor and CEO of Bain Capital as “poor.” Axelrod was asked during an interview on CNN about Romney’s statement during Tuesday’s debate that he sought “binders of women,” when trying to staff positions as governor. “I think the “binders for women” formulation was an awkward formulation,” said Axelrod, “but the point the governor was making

In the run-up to the second debate, feminists have been moaning about how Candy Crowley, unlike Jim Lehrer, was reduced to a "Vanna White ... holding a microphone." Advocating for equal debate clout, Crowley has been speaking out on her own behalf and told Mark Halperin of TIME magazine that during the debate, "[o]nce the table is kind of set by the town-hall questioner, there is then time for me to say, 'Hey, wait a second, what about X, Y, Z?'" In other words, Candy made it known prior to the event that she had no intention

Are you confused too by all the various polls flying around these days? Here are some clarifying updates: IBD/TIPP Daily Tracking Poll: This newspaper's historically accurate daily tracking poll of likely voters down the campaign stretch shows Mitt Romney has whittled Barack Obama's lead down to a narrow 1.5 point margin, 46.8% to 45.3%. With all appearances of a new tie developing. The Republican has accomplished this by holding his five-point lead among independents, 45% to 40%, while constructing an enlarged five-point lead among seniors, up from a three-point margin.

During Tuesday's second presidential debate, President Barack Obama said that women "rely" on Planned Parenthood for mammograms, but, according to the Food and Drug Administration, no Planned Parenthood facility in the United States is licensed to do mammograms. During Tuesday night’s debate against his Republican challenger Mitt Romney, Obama said, “When Gov. Romney says that we should eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood, there are millions of women all across the country who rely on Planned Parenthood for not just contraceptive care; they rely on it for mammograms, for cervical cancer screenings. That’s a pocketbook issue for women and

Now that Obama's down 51-45% in the latest Gallup poll, maybe the bureaucrats behind the jobs numbers decided it no longer made sense to juice their results to benefit a president who might go down in flames? I kid. I kid. Kinda. It was strange, though, to see last week's jobless claims hit a four-year low right after a counter-intuitive drop in the September unemployment rate -- all of this coming just weeks before a presidential election. But according to the corrupt media, only "truthers" dare question the government, so let's just get to

WASHINGTON - Tagg Romney said that he wanted to "take a swing" at President Barack Obama when things got intense at a recent presidential debate between the president and his father, Mitt. Tagg Romney says he doesn't like hearing accusations that his father isn't telling the truth. But he told a North Carolina radio host that he knows he has to "kind of sit there and take our punches." Tagg Romney also says his father is like anyone before debates and "gets butterflies a little bit." ABC News reports a campaign aide later said the remarks were made jokingly.

Political analysts (including The Fix) spend a good bit of time these days talking about important voter groups — Latino voters and female voters, in particular. But all of the focus on these groups has obfuscated one fact: Mitt Romney is performing very, very well among white voters. And in fact, most recent polls show him winning the white vote by more than any GOP presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan.

The second presidential debate is over, and to almost no one's surprise, the president gave a better performance than he did last week. Snap polls after the debate, in fact, said the president performed narrowly better than Mitt Romney. At least in part, I'm guessing the president scored a few points on his impassioned defense of his response to the attack on our embassy in Libya. The problem for the president, however, is that his statements about Libya — like so much of his rhetoric — soared much higher than the facts will support. And, with almost three weeks remaining

Despite numerous public events including a speech at the United Nations and two presidential debates, President Obama still hasn’t publicly and plainly acknowledged to Americans that terrorists killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans in Libya on Sept. 11. Others in his administration have said it, belatedly. But in the five weeks since the attack, Mr. Obama has skirted the issue, seemingly determined to avoid talking publicly about the nature of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi.

First lady Michelle Obama said Wednesday that President Obama did not look to blame others for the challenges he faced as president, an apparent rebuke to Republican accusations that the White House continues to point the finger at President George W. Bush for the lagging economy. "See, but your president, he didn't point fingers," Mrs. Obama said, at a campaign fundraiser in New York. "He didn't place blame. Instead, he got to work, because he was thinking about folks like my dad and like his grandmother. See, and that's why he cut taxes for small businesses and

According to a New York Post source, the channel has been bombarded with phone calls and blogs posts from 'Muslim extremist groups' warning that anyone airing a film like this is asking for trouble.

Sky-High Spending,Not Bush

President Obama often talks about the need for a "balanced" approach to deficit reduction, by which he means tax hikes in addition to spending cuts. At the recent presidential debate, for example, he said, "We've got to reduce our deficit, but we've got to do it in a balanced way. Asking the wealthy to pay a little bit more along with cuts." The only problem with this approach is that the massive projected deficits over the next 10 years aren't the result of too few taxes. They are entirely the result of too much spending. Here's the proof.

L.A. County assessor

About six months before John Noguez was elected Los Angeles County assessor, he received an $80,000 check from his old friend and prominent property tax consultant, Ramin Salari. Over the next few months, Salari cut Noguez two more checks, for a total of $180,000. In return, authorities say, assessor officials began giving tax breaks to many of Salari's clients. Prosecutors on Wednesday alleged that the payments to Noguez — and an additional $100,000 given to a lower-level assessor's official — were bribes to illegally reduce the values of properties so that Salari's clients would pay less in taxes.

More Americans than forecast filed applications for unemployment benefits last week, reflecting an unwinding of adjustments for seasonal swings at the start of a quarter. Jobless claims increased by 46,000 to 388,000 in the week ended Oct. 13 from a revised 342,000 the prior period that was the lowest since February 2008, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington. The median forecast of 49 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a rise in claims to 365,000. The typical pattern of large increases in unadjusted claims at the start of the quarter

On his Wednesday radio program, conservative talker Mark Levin suggested he didn’t care much for the presidential debate analysis of either The Washington Post’s George Will or the Fox News Channel’s Charles Krauthammer. Levin, author of “Ameritopia: The Unmaking of America,” first took on Will, who called Tuesday’s town hall debate “immeasurably the best in American history” on ABC’s post-debate coverage. “Why? How can this be said to be “immeasurably the best?” Levin asked. “I don’t think more lies have been told in 90 minutes in history of debates. Why? The constant interrupting by the moderator?

On MSNBC’s “Hardball” Wednesday evening, Chris Matthews discussed the theatrics of the presidential debate with James Lipton, longtime host of “Inside the Actor’s Studio.” Lipton offered some unremarkable observations — he called Mitt Romney “the boss who tells lame jokes and waits for everybody to laugh or else” — but what made the segment remarkable was Matthews’ reaction to a portion of the debate in which Romney in essence silenced President Obama, telling him he would have a chance to speak later. (Snip) After the clip ended, Matthews seemed appalled. “I don’t think [Romney] understands the Constitution

It still goes through Ohio, and the climb remains steep, but the Republican challenger has momentum on his side for the first time in months. If nothing else changes between now and Nov. 6, I see a narrow win for Romney and early retirement for President Barack Obama. If that happens, Obama will have no one to blame but himself. Perhaps he was following the advice of campaign gurus when he played the role of Clint Eastwood's empty chair during the first debate with Romney early this month.
