A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck Maine about 30 miles outside of Portland, Maine, on Tuesday night, shaking the ground throughout New England and surprising thousands of residents who rarely experience the phenomenon, according to geological and public safety officials. The quake hit at 7:12 p.m., the US Geological Survey said on its website. “It was a 10-second event,” said Steve McCausland, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety in a phone interview. “And other than residents calling public safety dispatchers to report [feeling a tremor], that was the main aftereffect.”

I love when Obama throws around the word “math,” and tells us things don’t add up. I love that he then throws around numbers which are not entirely meaningful, and out of context. Is that not apparent? Maybe some viewers are cowed by these lists of numbers? Romney knows the numbers, and and uses them with facility, and puts them in a comprehensible context. Ah, Lilly Ledbetter, pay equity for women. Obama loves this kind of rhetoric. Drags in his poor grandmother who was the only one in his life who ever held a job, back out

For Chinese viewers, the first U.S. presidential debate took place at 9 a.m. on a Thursday morning, in English. It was broadcast and streamed live from several outlets, but it did not generate much live commentary on the country’s microblogs. Of course, the low level of online Chinese interest shouldn’t be a surprise. China has its own politics and issues, and -- especially in a U.S. election year that some in the Chinese media have derided as boring -- those remain far more pressing to most Chinese than what happens to Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney

European Union governments imposed sanctions on Tuesday against major Iranian state companies in the oil and gas industry, and strengthened restrictions on the central bank, cranking up financial pressure over Tehran's nuclear program. More than 30 firms and institutions were listed in the EU's Official Journal as targets for asset freezes in the EU, including the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), a large crude exporter, and the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC). Both are vital to the Iranian oil industry, the main source of revenue for the government.

Ramajit Raghav of Kharkhoda village, near Sonepat, Haryana, close to India's capital New Delhi, became a father for the first time in 2010 when he was 94. Last week became a father for the second time when his young wife bore him a son. His record-breaking virility was reconfirmed on Tuesday as politicians in neighbouring Punjab claimed an increase in alcohol consumption and drug use was weakening sperm count in the state. Mr Raghav attributes his own virility to a teetotal lifestyle and a diet rich in fruit and dairy.

Syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer had some harsh words for his fellow journalists Tuesday concerning their coverage of the murders of four Americans last month at our consulate in Libya. During a Fox News Special Report segment about this matter and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's assertion that the buck stops with her on Benghazi, Krauthammer said, "The media had to be shamed by Fox News into looking into this in the first place" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

On Chris Matthew’s Hardball show on MSNBC moments ago, Bloomberg View columnist (formerly of Newsweek) said that if Mitt Romney wins the election more people would die from lack of health insurance. “If you need health insurance and Mitt Romney wins and Obamacare is repealed, you’re going to get sicker faster,” Alter said. “More people are going to die for lack of health insurance depending on the outcome of this election.” Alter noted that Obama’s re-election depended on a winning debate performance, tonight. The crisis of leadership in American government is easily explained: thanks to a flawed presidential primary system that rewards strident rhetoric and hyper-partisanship, candidates tailor their messages to fringe elements in small, unrepresentative states. The result? A nasty, shallow and expensive process that rewards sound bites rather than solutions and gamesmanship instead of ideas. This year, however, we have witnessed a rare phenomenon in American politics. A candidate has emerged from the rough and tumble of the primaries with his dignity intact. The system has produced not a demagogue but a manager,

President Obama will "win" tonight's debate, completely obliterating the memory of the first debate. And this will be true even if President Obama is completely humiliated in tonight's debate. President Obama was so thoroughly trounced in the first debate that even his most ardent -- not to say besotted -- supporters were forced to admit it. They were caught flat-footed, as their very love for Obama engendered an assumption of invincibility, just as, the first time Mike Tyson faced an earnest opponent, his corner men did not even have a proper ice pack

Occupy Wall Street campers have made Halloween at a church in lower Manhattan simply too scary, church officials told FoxNews.com. Citing an “abundance of caution,” the Rev. James Cooper of Trinity Church said the Episcopal parish at Broadway and Wall Street in Manhattan has canceled it popular Halloween activities due to safety issues arising from a sidewalk encampment in front of the place of worship. “Canceling a beloved family event is not a decision taken lightly,” Cooper said in a statement issued Sunday. “Last year, more than 1,200 people took part. However, we are deeply concerned about the escalating illegal

President Barack Obama will face off against his Republican challenger Mitt Romney tonight in what is arguably the most high-stakes debate of his re-election campaign. After his poor showing at the first presidential debate, Obama faces serious pressure to put up a strong performance during Tuesday's rematch. (Snip) Here's a rundown of Obama's pre-debate schedule, courtesy of the White House pool report: 1. The POTUS worked out this morning and then met up with his team to do a short 45 minute review this morning. He had pasta with chicken for lunch. 2. This afternoon he will do last minute

Tehran, Iran - A senior Iranian military official claimed Tuesday that Iranian-made surveillance drones have made dozens of apparently undetected flights into Israeli airspace from Lebanon in recent years to probe air defenses and collect reconnaissance data. An Israeli official rejected the account. The Iranian official declined to give further details on the purported missions or the capabilities of the drones, including whether they were similar to the unmanned aircraft launched last week by Lebanon's Hezbollah and downed by Israeli warplanes. It also was impossible to independently verify the claims

Investigators with the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General (DHS OIG) have completed their investigative report, which will be referred to the Department of Justice along with a memorandum of activity that lists potential criminal actions. Think the deck for Tuesday's town hall debate might have been stacked? The firm hired to select the audience asking questions is under pressure from the Obama Justice Department, and some observers suggest may have already succumbed to that bullying. After the Gallup Organization refused to cave to Chicago-style pressure from the Obama gang -- which according to internal memos published by the Daily Caller had company officials comparing it to a "Godfather situation" -- the Obama Justice Department suddenly joined a three-year-old lawsuit against Gallup. The Vatican has distanced itself from a row over Muslim immigrants in Europe triggered by the showing at a synod of a video that claims "Europe as we know it will cease to exist." Cardinal Peter Turkson, the president of the Vatican's council for justice and peace – and seen as a possible future pope – played the disputed video in a discussion period on Saturday during a synod attended by 262 bishops from across the world. Titled Muslim Demographics, and viewed more than 13 million times on YouTube since its release in 2009, the seven-minute long video claims Muslim

The militant Islamic fundamentalist Taliban who shot a 14-year-old Pakistani school girl described her yesterday as a “spy of the West” whom they attacked, not because she favoured education for girls, but because she defamed them and their war. “She used to propagate against mujahideen [holy warriors] to defame [the] Taliban. The Quran says that people propagating against Islam and Islamic forces would be killed,” the Taliban said in a statement. “We targeted her because she would speak against the Taliban while sitting with shameless strangers and idealised the biggest enemy of Islam,

If you want to know who’s going to win the White House this November, your best bet might be to fire up your laptop and download some stock market tables. According to a new study posted on the Social Science Research Network (SSRN), which distributes social science research from specialized research institutions, the stock market is a much better predictor of presidential re-election bids than the gauges investors have traditionally consulted, such as the nation’s unemployment rate. In their study, titled “Social Mood, Stock Market Performance and U.S. Presidential Elections,”

Tom Brokaw had his Jimmy Carter moment on Tuesday. The veteran journalist appeared on MSNBC's The Cycle to call for Americans to accept a permanent lowering of their standard of living. Speaking of the next generation, Brokaw blithely insisted that "they probably won't have as much disposable income." He added, "They won't live in homes that are McMansions. We gotta get real." The former Nightly News anchor, estimated to be worth about $70 million, didn't seem to find this a bad thing: "It doesn't mean we can't have everything that we need." Brokaw lobbied for Americans to "get proportion."

CHICAGO - Chelsea Clinton is taking on the discomforting issue of diarrhea, throwing her family's philanthropic heft behind a sweeping effort in Nigeria to prevent the deaths of 1 million mothers and children each year from preventable causes, including 100,000 deaths from diarrhea. The 32-year-old daughter of President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton joined Nigerian officials, the prime minister of Norway and other leaders on Tuesday in promoting expanded access to zinc and oral rehydration solutions or ORS, a treatment that could prevent more than 90 percent of diarrhea-related deaths in the country.
