Washington - A federal appeals court on Tuesday threw out the conviction of Salim Ahmed Hamdan, a former driver for Osama bin Laden who served a prison term for material support for terrorism. In a 3-0 ruling, the appeals court said that material support for terrorism was not an international-law war crime at the time Hamdan engaged in the activity for which he was convicted. Hamdan was sentenced to 5 1/2 years, given credit for time served and is back home in Yemen, reportedly working as a taxi driver.

The Obama administration's decision to block oil drilling in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska (NPR-A) is the latest symbol of an energy policy that could be described as "none of the above." It is an even worse decision when you consider the recent history of the Reserve, which was partially opened to oil and gas drilling and exploration by the Clinton administration in the late 1990s. President Barack Obama's action not only reverses Bill Clinton's policy, but also undermines Congress's intent in setting aside the NPR-A in 1976.It so happens that I wrote my undergraduate thesis on the NPR-A--specifically,

An American military judge has ruled that the five men on trial for planning the September 11 terrorist attacks can wear camouflage clothing in the courtroom. The leeway that the judge granted the accused terrorists comes during the second day of the pretrial decisions in the case against Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the hijacked plane attacks and his four alleged al Qaeda conspirators. The request for the different dress code comes as the men want to portray themselves as soldiers during the trial. Ruling on one of the motions Tuesday, the judge at the

As the growing economic crisis continues to wreak havoc throughout the European Union, the armed forces of tiny Switzerland are preparing to deal with a potential EU disaster that could see refugees flood across the borders amid widespread unrest and chaos. Top Swiss officials have warned that if escalating turmoil were to spill across the border, Switzerland, which is not a member of the EU, will be ready to tackle it. Among the now widely cited preparations was a two-week military training exercise conducted in mid-September dubbed “Stabilo Due.” The drill, which saw thousands of Swiss troops, including air force

Jerusalem - Israeli defense officials say that Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip have for the first time fired an anti-aircraft missile at Israeli aircraft. The officials say the militants fired the Strela shoulder-fired missile at an Israeli helicopter operating over Gaza last week, but missed their target. The officials, speaking under condition of anonymity because they were discussing a military operation, said Israeli intelligence has long believed that Gaza militants possessed these weapons, but this was the first time they were fired. They said the air force has taken special precautions for several years assuming the threat existed. Israel

Does it really count as a lie if a fellow simply can’t tell the difference between fantasy and reality? Yes. Yes, it does. Insanity is no excuse. Last month, Joe Biden told a lie. I know that’s not at all specific enough, so here’s how CBS News described it:During a campaign stop in Athens, Ohio, on Saturday, Vice President Joe Biden said the last time he was in the town, playing against the Ohio University football team in 1963, he almost got arrested for walking into a girls’ dormitory. (Snip) Why isn’t the name “Biden” on any of those rosters?

New York - Janis Mason is 94 and has been receiving Social Security benefits for nearly 30 years. Because she has outlived her savings, the monthly checks are her only source of income. "I always cross my fingers that the money can last the whole month," Mason said. To keep pace with the rising cost of living, the Social Security Administration announced a 1.7% benefits increase for 2013. This will give a $19 boost to the average benefit of $1,130 a month. For some of the 56.3 million people who get Social Security -- either because they are retired or

Here's a recent statement frequently suggested by leftist academics, think tank researchers and policymakers: "People were not just struggling because of their personal deficiencies. There were structural factors at play. People weren't poor because they made bad decisions. They were poor because our society creates poverty." Who made that statement and where it was made is not important at all, but its corrosive effects on the minds of black people, particularly black youths, are devastating. There's nothing intellectually challenging or unusual about poverty.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer, otherwise known as the Obama Rag, is now tacitly encouraging voters to commit voter fraud. How? In various neighborhoods around Cleveland, Cincinnati and Milwaukee, there are billboards reading, “Voter Fraud is a Felony! Up to 3 ½ years and a $10,000 fine.” This, of course, is true. But the Obama Rag is distraught that the billboards may discourage ineligible voters (most, if not all would be Obama voters, since the billboards are largely in black neighborhoods) from casting their illegal votes. The editorial page of the Rag reads: The appearance, mostly in Cleveland's predominantly black neighborhoods,

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. –President Obama has failed to seal the deal for a second term exactly three weeks from election day. His weak performance in the first debate squandered an edge that his campaign — and Bill Clinton — worked hard to establish over the summer and opened the door for a come-from-behind victory by Mitt Romney. With the campaign at “a tipping point,” the president must go beyond his negative attack ads and give voters a positive reason to support him. He needs to explain what he’s learned from his years in office and exactly what

The Obama administration announced last week that it is setting aside 285,000 acres of public lands to be used for “commercial-scale solar development” – a total acreage amount that surpasses Rocky Mountain National Park, with 265,461 acres owned by the federal government. “As part of President Obama’s all-of-the-above energy strategy to expand domestic energy production, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today finalized a program for spurring development of solar energy on public lands in six western states,” the Department of Interior press release on the new project states.

The first thing to know about a "town-hall-style" presidential debate is that it bears as much resemblance to an actual campaign town-hall event as a marble statue does to its animated subject. Real town halls are usually unscripted and unpredictable and often raucous events. Town-hall debates are orderly, with the questions from the audience screened -- selected to represent questions the moderator would ask if they were doing the questioning. Moderators are likely to reframe some questions and ask their own follow-ups in the language of Sunday morning talk shows. The candidates’ answers are subject to short time limits.

In the vice-presidential debate, the two candidates, both Roman Catholics, were asked about their religious beliefs, about how those beliefs impact their political positions, and specifically about abortion. This was the response of Vice President Joe Biden: My religion defines who I am. And I’ve been a practicing Catholic my whole life. And it has particularly informed my social doctrine. Catholic social doctrine talks about taking care of those who — who can’t take care of themselves, people who need help. With regard to abortion, I accept my church’s

In a story on the front page of the Washington Post about the controversies surrounding reclusive Illinois Democratic congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., readers have to wade through 23 paragraphs before they hit the story’s most interesting nugget of information: The prince [Jackson] was erecting the foundations of a power base, diving into countless local races by endorsing candidates, seeding the region with mayors and other local officials who would be loyal supporters. But he could be mercurial, former associates say. Jackson sometimes boasted that he was a reincarnated Greek chariot driver, [political operative Frank] Coconate said.

A foreign policy adviser to Mitt Romney, in a preview of the second presidential debate, said on Tuesday that Romney will ask President Obama to "man up" on his response to the terrorist attack in Libya that left four Americans dead. Richard Williamson, the former special envoy to Sudan under President George W. Bush, was asked on Fox News how Romney would bring up the issue of September’s attack on the American mission in Benghazi in the debate. "I think Governor Romney, quite properly, will be asking questions, probing, and trying to ask the

The chief executive, who led the beleaguered bank for five years, will be replaced by veteran staffer Michael Corbat, effective immediately, the bank said in a statement today. “Given the progress we have made in the last few years, I have concluded that now is the right time for someone else to take the helm at Citigroup,” said Pandit, who is also stepping down from the bank's board. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has stepped forward to say she accepts responsibility for the fact that our consulate in Benghazi was refused enhanced security. This is another example of her willingness to take one for the team. But what does it mean? Will she “accept responsibility” by resigning her office? This is what is meant by accepting responsibility in most parliamentary democracies. As secretary of state, she surely knows that any of her NATO colleagues who accepted responsibility for such a debacle would immediately surrender his office.

In a recent interview with the very Obama-friendly Washington Post, Ambassador Susan Rice said something very interesting that would appear to confirm the belief that it was senior advisers within the Obama White House who told her to lie to the American public regarding the true nature of the Benghazi Massacre that killed four Americans – including a United States ambassador. According to a longtime military insider, the quote from Ambassador Rice leaves NO DOUBT – it was the Obama White House that told her exactly what to say.

With a new poll showing growing American anger with the auto bailout, a conservative group is readying a new ad to air in presidential election battleground states that quotes the Obama appointed head of General Motors crowing about building cars in overseas and working "for China." "Our commitment to working in China, with China, for China remains strong," said GM boss Dan Akerson in a 2011 visit to Shanghai. During that speech he also blurted out, "Seven out of ten of our vehicles were made outside the United States." Let Freedom Ring, a group
