First lady Michelle Obama – after speaking about the importance of contraception and that “women can make our own decisions about our bodies” – proclaimed to an Ohio crowd that, “Every single child in this country is worthy.” “We want to give all our children opportunities worthy of their promise – because all of our kids are worthy,” Michelle Obama said. “Every single child in this country is worthy. We want our children to have that sense of limitless possibility; the belief that here in America, the greatest country on the planet, there is always

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. –President Obama has failed to seal the deal for a second term exactly three weeks from election day. His weak performance in the first debate squandered an edge that his campaign — and Bill Clinton — worked hard to establish over the summer and opened the door for a come-from-behind victory by Mitt Romney. With the campaign at “a tipping point,” the president must go beyond his negative attack ads and give voters a positive reason to support him. He needs to explain what he’s learned from his years in office and exactly what

The Obama administration announced last week that it is setting aside 285,000 acres of public lands to be used for “commercial-scale solar development” – a total acreage amount that surpasses Rocky Mountain National Park, with 265,461 acres owned by the federal government. “As part of President Obama’s all-of-the-above energy strategy to expand domestic energy production, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today finalized a program for spurring development of solar energy on public lands in six western states,” the Department of Interior press release on the new project states.

The first thing to know about a "town-hall-style" presidential debate is that it bears as much resemblance to an actual campaign town-hall event as a marble statue does to its animated subject. Real town halls are usually unscripted and unpredictable and often raucous events. Town-hall debates are orderly, with the questions from the audience screened -- selected to represent questions the moderator would ask if they were doing the questioning. Moderators are likely to reframe some questions and ask their own follow-ups in the language of Sunday morning talk shows. The candidates’ answers are subject to short time limits.

In the vice-presidential debate, the two candidates, both Roman Catholics, were asked about their religious beliefs, about how those beliefs impact their political positions, and specifically about abortion. This was the response of Vice President Joe Biden: My religion defines who I am. And I’ve been a practicing Catholic my whole life. And it has particularly informed my social doctrine. Catholic social doctrine talks about taking care of those who — who can’t take care of themselves, people who need help. With regard to abortion, I accept my church’s

In a story on the front page of the Washington Post about the controversies surrounding reclusive Illinois Democratic congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., readers have to wade through 23 paragraphs before they hit the story’s most interesting nugget of information: The prince [Jackson] was erecting the foundations of a power base, diving into countless local races by endorsing candidates, seeding the region with mayors and other local officials who would be loyal supporters. But he could be mercurial, former associates say. Jackson sometimes boasted that he was a reincarnated Greek chariot driver, [political operative Frank] Coconate said.

A foreign policy adviser to Mitt Romney, in a preview of the second presidential debate, said on Tuesday that Romney will ask President Obama to "man up" on his response to the terrorist attack in Libya that left four Americans dead. Richard Williamson, the former special envoy to Sudan under President George W. Bush, was asked on Fox News how Romney would bring up the issue of September’s attack on the American mission in Benghazi in the debate. "I think Governor Romney, quite properly, will be asking questions, probing, and trying to ask the

In a surprising shakeup, Vikram Pandit is out as head of Citigroup. The chief executive, who led the beleaguered bank for five years, will be replaced by veteran staffer Michael Corbat, effective immediately, the bank said in a statement today. “Given the progress we have made in the last few years, I have concluded that now is the right time for someone else to take the helm at Citigroup,” said Pandit, who is also stepping down from the bank's board. Sources believe Pandit's sudden exit was a choice made by the board

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has stepped forward to say she accepts responsibility for the fact that our consulate in Benghazi was refused enhanced security. This is another example of her willingness to take one for the team. But what does it mean? Will she “accept responsibility” by resigning her office? This is what is meant by accepting responsibility in most parliamentary democracies. As secretary of state, she surely knows that any of her NATO colleagues who accepted responsibility for such a debacle would immediately surrender his office.

In a recent interview with the very Obama-friendly Washington Post, Ambassador Susan Rice said something very interesting that would appear to confirm the belief that it was senior advisers within the Obama White House who told her to lie to the American public regarding the true nature of the Benghazi Massacre that killed four Americans – including a United States ambassador. According to a longtime military insider, the quote from Ambassador Rice leaves NO DOUBT – it was the Obama White House that told her exactly what to say.

With a new poll showing growing American anger with the auto bailout, a conservative group is readying a new ad to air in presidential election battleground states that quotes the Obama appointed head of General Motors crowing about building cars in overseas and working "for China." "Our commitment to working in China, with China, for China remains strong," said GM boss Dan Akerson in a 2011 visit to Shanghai. During that speech he also blurted out, "Seven out of ten of our vehicles were made outside the United States." Let Freedom Ring, a group

In the past two weeks, 15 Americans have died of fungal meningitis and more than 200 have become infected from tainted steroid injections they received to treat problems with their spines. The “compounding” pharmacy responsible for distributing the contaminated steroid shipped nearly 18,000 vials of the product to 75 facilities in 23 states, so that many more people could have been exposed to the fungal contaminant.

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) says he's "not well" and goes to doctor's appointments at George Washington University Hospital twice a day. "I go over there ... at 10 [a.m.] and 1 p.m.," the Illinois congressman told The Daily in a report published Tuesday. Jackson Jr.'s comments are some of the latest he and his staff have made about his condition since he admitted to suffering from bipolar disorder earlier in the year. In mid-June, Jackson Jr. took a leave of absence from Congress to attend treatment for the disorder. His office initially explained

Richmond, Va. -Republican U.S. Senate candidate George Allen's super PAC has received a $1 million boost heading into the most critical weeks of the election courtesy of Texas homebuilder and conservative heavyweight Bob Perry. The billionaire contributed heavily to George W. Bush's election efforts and was one of the chief donors for Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the political group that attacked Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's military record during the 2004 election. In four $250,000 donations from July to August, Perry contributed $1 million to the pro-Allen Independence Virginia PAC, according to a report filed with

Despite statements by Vice President Joe Biden, the State Department is about to begin formal negotiations over the extension of U.S. troops past 2014, a top State Department official said Tuesday. Last week, U.S. and Afghan negotiators met in Kabul to talk about the Bilateral Security Agreement that will govern the extension of U.S. troops past 2014, when President Barack Obama said the combat mission in Afghanistan will end and the U.S. will complete the transition of the entire country to Afghan government control. Also last week, Biden told Americans during his Oct. 11 debate with Republican

The family of Arlen Specter, including his wife, Joan, and two sons, received hundreds of mourners this morning before the noon start of the former U.S. senator's funeral. The small, suburban roads surrounding the synagogue were crowded with mourners heading to the public service on the brilliantly clear fall day, with leaves just starting to turn. The family arrived at the cavernous, modernist Har Zion Temple in Penn Valley at about 9:30 a.m. All 1,000 seats available in the Conservative synagogue were filled, with standing room set aside for additional mourners.

In New York this week, former Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton adviser Neera Tanden, now president of the Center for American Progress, told John Heilemann, "People say the reason Obama wouldn't call [Bill] Clinton is because he doesn't like him. The truth is, Obama doesn't call anyone, and he's not close to almost anyone. It's stunning that he's in politics, because he really doesn't like people." WASHINGTON- The Supreme Court is siding with Democrats in refusing to block early voting in the battleground state of Ohio. The court on Tuesday refused a Republican request to get involved in a dispute over early voting in the state on the three days before Election Day. The campaign of President Barack Obama and Ohio Democrats sued the state over changes in Ohio law that took away the three days of voting for most people, but made exceptions for military personnel and Ohioans living overseas. Democrats say nearly 100,000 people voted in the three days before the election in 2008.

Oklahoma Republican Senator Tom Coburn released his “Wastebook 2012” on Tuesday, which highlights over $18 billion in taxpayer money that the outspoken spending hawk says has been wasted by the government. In his report, the senator singles out the current Congress as the “biggest waste of taxpayer money” for its potentially historic lack of productivity. Some committees rarely hold hearings, and Congress has passed just 61 bills to date. Twenty senators, Coburn notes, have yet to even introduce an amendment — all while allowing wasteful spending to continue unabated.

Former president George W. Bush reaffirmed his support of Mitt Romney on Tuesday, saying he would be a "great president" if elected. "President Bush is an enthusiastic supporter of the Romney-Ryan ticket," said Bush spokesman Freddy Ford. Ford disputed a New York magazine story -- a Jeb Bush profile we reported on Monday -- that said in part that George W. Bush has been critical of Romney's campaign and skeptical of his chances. Not so, says Ford: Bush is "confident Mitt Romney is going to be a great president for America.”

President Obama's senior campaign strategist David Axelrod called Washington Post opinion blogger "sick" last night for calling Secretary of State Hillary Clinton a "doormat" for taking responsibility for the attack in Benghazi, Libya, last month. Rubin is enthusiastically pro-Romney, and widely seen among the political press corps as an arm for the Romney campaign. In a tweet last night, she said Clinton was "no feminist, more like a doormat" because she had allowed both President Obama and former President Bill Clinton, her husband, to "humiliate her." Tonight is the big town hall debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, L.I. The town hall format is, to put it lightly, unpredictable. They tend to be a string of people telling a sad tale of woe about their lives or someone they know and asking what each candidate is going to do for them. They can devolve into something akin to dinner with your brother-in-law who is always in need of borrowing money. Many of the questions would make our Founding Fathers ashamed that our federal government has grown so much in size and power that citizens
