Washington - The White House has put special operations strike forces on standby and moved drones into the skies above Africa, ready to strike militant targets from Libya to Mali - if investigators can find the al-Qaida-linked group responsible for the death of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans in Libya. But officials say the administration, with weeks until the presidential election, is weighing whether the short-term payoff of exacting retribution on al-Qaida is worth the risk that such strikes could elevate the group's profile in the region, alienate governments the U.S. needs to fight it in the future

Mitt Romney announced Monday that he banked $170.4 million in September for his campaign’s coffers. That means Romney has about $191 million cash on hand with three weeks before the election. “With less than one month left, we will continue the hard work of raising the resources to ensure that Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan can win in November and bring real change to the American people,” Romney Victory National Finance Chairman Spencer Zwick said in a Monday statement. The $170 million figure consists of money raised by Romney for President, Romney Victory, and the Republican National Committee.

The second trailer for 'Zero Dark Thirty' the hotly anticipated movie about the mission to kill Osama bin Laden has been released offering tantalising glimpses of Hollywood's version of 'the greatest manhunt in history.' Starring Jessica Chastain as a 'Homeland' style CIA operative gathering intelligence and the Soprano's James Gandolfini as then CIA chief Leon Panetta, the movie is the latest work from Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow. While the first trailer released in August gave away little, this one offers up heavy clues about the film's storyline, culminating in a breathless approach by Navy SEAL Team 6 to bin Laden's

An odd Obama success

When SpaceX's "Dragon" capsule docked with the International Space Station last week there was a lot of interest. One angle was surprisingly underplayed: The SpaceX success is also a success for the Obama administration's space policy. Since Barack Obama took office in 2008, U.S. space policy has shifted in a surprisingly free-market direction. Despite the Obama crowd's general enthusiasm for big government, where space policy is concerned they've taken a decidedly different approach: Instead of building its own rockets as a replacement for the now-retired space shuttle, the federal government is now buying launch services

Radio talk show host and Fox News contributor Laura Ingraham was right when she confronted New York Times political reporter Jeff Zeleny on the set of "Fox News Sunday" this weekend: "I would hope that the New York Times, as they camped outside of Scooter Libby’s house during the whole Valerie Plame thing -- are you guys camped out of the Susan Rice residence?” She said, “This is ridiculous and I think the press is partly culpable here.” And she wasn’t alone in voicing that sentiment. Fox News' Brit Hume agreed with Ingraham

Based on George's memoirs, Brother, it is being staged at the Curve Theatre, in Leicester, and the Lowry, in Salford, from 12-20 October.

Look out. Hollywood is having a Republican crisis. Once America’s most dependable bastion of liberal blather, the land of make believe has gone rogue. Each week, the new movie season brings another defection to Camp Romney, a place where taxes are less punishing, foreign policy is reliably pro-Israel, and stupid movies like “Innocence of Muslims’’ are not blamed for costing American lives. It’s the terrorists, stupid. You can see this sea change in the new Ben Affleck-directed movie, “Argo.” Once an ardent Obama-phile, the disaffected Hollywood hunk has chosen this election season to take on

Brussels -- As the European Union struggles with a continuing economic crisis, residents' life evaluation ratings show little or no improvement, and in some countries, they have worsened further. Life ratings have declined the most in Cyprus, Spain, and France in 2012 compared with last year. In the handful of countries where life ratings have increased -- Bulgaria, Romania, Lithuania, and Portugal -- the percentage who are "thriving" is still among the lowest in Europe. An average of 37% of EU residents are thriving in 2012, while the majority continue to be "struggling" (54%), and 10% are "suffering." EU residents

Voters are now more critical of how the Obama administration has handled the situation in Libya, including the murder of the U.S. ambassador there, and most think it will hurt President Obama’s chances for reelection. However, they are slightly more confident in the president than Mitt Romney to handle events in the Middle East. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 35% of Likely U.S. Voters now rate the way the administration has responded to the situation in Libya as good or excellent. In a case that marks the biggest fraud scandal to strike Broadway in living memory, prosecutors said that Mark Hotton, a 46-year-old living in New York City's Long Island suburbs, created four investors out of thin air in hopes of receiving a fee and a percentage of the profits from the show.

WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney leads President Obama by five percentage points among likely voters in the nation's top battlegrounds, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds, and he has growing enthusiasm among women to thank. As the presidential campaign heads into its final weeks, the survey of voters in 12 crucial swing states finds female voters much more engaged in the election and increasingly concerned about the deficit and debt issues that favor Romney. The Republican nominee now ties the president among women who are likely voters, 48%-48%, while he leads by 12 points among men.

A doctor sums up the ironies and hypocrisies of Obamacare in one sentence. It’s 132 words long and takes about a minute to get out, but it’s still one sentence. As a humorous introduction to an in-depth examination of the serious dangers of Obamacare, Dr. Barbara Ruth Bellar provided her audience with a surprisingly succinct single sentence summary of Obamacare. Technically, you could argue that she's done in my her own gloating "One sentence!" interjection in the middle, which some might argue splits the sentence into three sentence fragments. But, she's a former nun and Army major, so I'm not

Williamsburg, Va. - With the economy showing some signs of improvement three weeks before Election Day, President Barack Obama on Monday laid down a full embrace of the economic record many Republicans say is his biggest weakness. The president’s first act in this critical campaign week was to announce a new battleground state advertisement featuring voters discussing the ways their economic conditions have improved during his term. The ad was hitting the airwaves as Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney huddled in intense preparation for their second debate as polls show a closely fought campaign.
