A former stock broker was arrested Monday and accused of duping the producers of "Rebecca: The Musical" into believing he had secured $4.5 million in financing from a group of overseas investors to help the beleaguered show open on Broadway, federal prosecutors said. In a case that marks the biggest fraud scandal to strike Broadway in living memory, prosecutors said that Mark Hotton, a 46-year-old living in New York City's Long Island suburbs, created four investors out of thin air in hopes of receiving a fee and a percentage of the profits from the show.

Photographs released Monday document flight training exercises on China’s first aircraft carrier, the New York Times reports. Chinese navy pilots are using J-15 fighter-bombers to practice a maneuver, “in which the plane makes brief contact with the flight deck before flying on.” (Snip) Chinese-produced Z-8 helicopters have also been practicing take-offs and landings on the carrier. Both aircraft are based on Russian and French designs. Chinese pilots are believed to have been practicing carrier operations on mock flight decks located inland. …

WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney leads President Obama by five percentage points among likely voters in the nation's top battlegrounds, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds, and he has growing enthusiasm among women to thank. As the presidential campaign heads into its final weeks, the survey of voters in 12 crucial swing states finds female voters much more engaged in the election and increasingly concerned about the deficit and debt issues that favor Romney. The Republican nominee now ties the president among women who are likely voters, 48%-48%, while he leads by 12 points among men.

A doctor sums up the ironies and hypocrisies of Obamacare in one sentence. It’s 132 words long and takes about a minute to get out, but it’s still one sentence. As a humorous introduction to an in-depth examination of the serious dangers of Obamacare, Dr. Barbara Ruth Bellar provided her audience with a surprisingly succinct single sentence summary of Obamacare. Technically, you could argue that she's done in my her own gloating "One sentence!" interjection in the middle, which some might argue splits the sentence into three sentence fragments. But, she's a former nun and Army major, so I'm not

A pocket-sized car for pocket change? It could soon be a reality for American drivers, but they’ll still need pretty big pockets. The chairman of Indian automaker Tata has announced that he plans to bring the $3,000 Nano micro car to the United States within three years, according to Automotive News. Ratan Tata told the news outlet that the 10-foot-long car four-door is being redesigned for sales in the U.S. and Europe. (Snip) Along with added safety equipment, it’s likely the car will get a larger, less polluting engine for export markets. Unfortunately, that means the price will increase, as

In 2010, an Air Force CV-22 Osprey tiltrotor — a hybrid warplane that takes off like a helicopter and cruises like an airplane — crashed in southern Afghanistan, killing four people on board. When Brig. Gen. Don Harvel, the lead accident investigator, concluded that engine failure might have been to blame for the Osprey’s loss, he was overruled by a superior officer who Harvel says was eager to protect the military’s $36 billion investment in the controversial V-22. A gay rights group is urging President Obama to speak in support of same-sex marriage in Maine and three other states that have ballot initiatives next month. An organization called LegalizeLove.com says it will air a one-minute TV ad in those states using Obama's own words when he declared support for gay marriage in May. To drive home their call for Obama to speak out, two of the group's leaders were delivering a bullhorn and a wedding cake with two grooms to Obama's campaign headquarters in Portland on Monday

In an attempt to draw attention to the problem of the consumption of soft drinks the Center for Science in the Public Interest has launched a video created by U.S. advertising guru Alex Bogusky. The Real Bears PSA depicts a family of polar bears who all consume way too much soda, resulting in a variety of problems, including weight gain, tooth decay, erectile dysfunction, diabetes and amputation. Eventually the father bear, who has had his foot amputated because of his diabetes, realizes that the family is just drinking too much soda and the family dumps their remaining supply in the

Williamsburg, Va. - With the economy showing some signs of improvement three weeks before Election Day, President Barack Obama on Monday laid down a full embrace of the economic record many Republicans say is his biggest weakness. The president’s first act in this critical campaign week was to announce a new battleground state advertisement featuring voters discussing the ways their economic conditions have improved during his term. The ad was hitting the airwaves as Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney huddled in intense preparation for their second debate as polls show a closely fought campaign.

Justice Antonin Scalia said recently the public's declining interest in religion has made it possible for the Supreme Court to have no Protestants for the first time ever, the National Catholic Register reports. "The fact that the Supreme Court consists of–what now?–six Catholics and three Jews: I would like to believe that it's because of more religious toleration, but I think it's actually because of indifference," Scalia said. During a packed talk at the Catholic Information Center, Scalia said the separation of church and state is more important in America than anywhere else despite this growing indifference, the Catholic Register

Mark Halperin of Time reports on some unusually bipartisan criticism of Candy Crowley, the CNN anchor scheduled to moderate Tuesday’s town-hall debate: (Snip) The debate agreement specifically states that the moderator isn’t supposed to rephrase those audience questions, ask her own follow-ups, or change the subject. She’s just supposed to watch the clock and keep the debate moving along according to schedule. But as Halperin notes, Crowley herself never signed on to the terms of the debate, and he notes there’s no evidence she was ever asked to sign such an agreement. The rules merely stipulate that she be given

Something's happening here . . . Last week, Chuck Todd came in for criticism at NewsBusters for sniffing off a Rasmussen poll favorable to Mitt Romney as "slop." But has yesterday's slop become today's sirloin for the NBC political director? Sure looks like it. In a remarkable shift, on today's Morning Joe Todd stated that in recent days he has seen a "structural shift" in the polling data in Romney's favor. With a strong performance at tomorrow's townhall-style debate in which he connects with average Americans, Todd declared that Romney could "win this election"

President Barack Obama's Hollywood supporters are being painted into a corner by the administration's evolving narrative on the Sept. 11 attack that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens. Enter Alec Baldwin, the far-left star of the low-rated "30 Rock." Baldwin used his Twitter account to push a despicable narrative started by Obama spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter. The scandal surrounding the terrorist attack in Benghazi isn't an administration problem. The Romney/Ryan ticket is simply using the matter as a wedge issue to gain votes. Fox News’ go-to psychiatrist, Keith Ablow, appeared on Fox & Friends Weekend to discuss Joe Biden‘s debate performance. Given that Biden’s laughter, smirks, and malarkeyisms had been dissected pretty thoroughly by the time Sunday rolled around, Ablow had his work cut out for him. How, he must have asked himself, will I make my mark? What will make people pay attention? How does one cut through the noise? Well. With more noise, obviously. Let’s begin by noting that Ablow was asked about what Biden’s debate behavior suggests about his “personality,”

Twenty-one members of Texas’ congressional delegation have asked Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Tom Frieden to take “immediate action” to address the West Nile virus outbreak. Even though the virus has been in the U.S. for 13 years, current control measures just prevention measures such as mosquito abatement and public education. Texas has been hardest hit in this year’s outbreak, with nearly 10 times the number of reported cases than the next affected state and 50 deaths in the Dallas/Fort Worth region.

Were the 2012 campaign a Hitchcock movie, Mitt Romney would be the MacGuffin—a device that drives a lot of plot gyrations but proves inconsequential in itself. Then again, Barack Obama could be, too. Our down-to-the-wire presidential contest is arguably just a narrative speed bump in the scenario that has been gathering steam throughout the Obama presidency: the resurgence of the American right, the most determined and coherent political force in America. No matter who is elected president, what Romney calls severe conservatism will continue to consolidate its hold over one of our two major parties.

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s campaign has filed a federal lawsuit in Wisconsin to extend the amount of time military and overseas absentee ballots can be returned. The federal suit came on the heels a campaign request to the state’s Government Accountability Board to extend the deadline after at least 30 Wisconsin municipalities failed to send overseas ballots 45 days before the election, which is required under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voter Act (UOCAVA). The campaign proceeded with the suit against GAB after their initial request was denied.

Washington - Retail sales in the U.S. rose more than projected in September, reflecting broad-based gains that indicate household spending helped bolster economic growth last quarter. The 1.1 percent advance followed a revised 1.2 percent increase in August that was the biggest since October 2010 and larger than previously reported, Commerce Department figures showed today in Washington. The median forecast of 77 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a 0.8 percent rise. A drop in joblessness and firming home prices are leading to gains in confidence that may help chains such as Target Corp. (TGT) and TJX Cos. (TJX) keep

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed on Monday to consider whether Arizona can demand that voters show proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. The high court will not hear the case before the Nov. 6 U.S. election, ensuring that the disputed registration requirement in Arizona will not be in effect. The legal dispute over the registration requirement dates back to 2004 when Arizona voters passed a ballot initiative, Proposition 200, designed to stop illegal immigrants from voting. The measure amended state election laws to require voters to show proof of citizenship to register to vote, as
