When Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. emerged from last summer's disappearance—he had, his family said, been seeking treatment for bipolar disorder at the Mayo Clinic—his chief of staff told reporters that he was "convalescing with his wife and children at home in Washington." But last week, he was seen convalescing in a D.C. bar with two different women on two consecutive nights. According to two independent sources, Jackson was spotted drinking at Bier Baron Tavern, a craft beer bar not far from Dupont Circle, on Tuesday and Wednesday nights last week. Each night, he was accompanied by a different woman.

Fox News’ go-to psychiatrist, Keith Ablow, appeared on Fox & Friends Weekend to discuss Joe Biden‘s debate performance. Given that Biden’s laughter, smirks, and malarkeyisms had been dissected pretty thoroughly by the time Sunday rolled around, Ablow had his work cut out for him. How, he must have asked himself, will I make my mark? What will make people pay attention? How does one cut through the noise? Well. With more noise, obviously. Let’s begin by noting that Ablow was asked about what Biden’s debate behavior suggests about his “personality,”

Twenty-one members of Texas’ congressional delegation have asked Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Tom Frieden to take “immediate action” to address the West Nile virus outbreak. Even though the virus has been in the U.S. for 13 years, current control measures just prevention measures such as mosquito abatement and public education. Texas has been hardest hit in this year’s outbreak, with nearly 10 times the number of reported cases than the next affected state and 50 deaths in the Dallas/Fort Worth region.

A Republican pollster surveying the Missouri Senate race between incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and controversial Republican senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) finds the race shifting in Akins direction. In that survey, conducted by the Republican polling firm Wenzel Strategies, finds Akin leading McCaskill by 49 to 45 percent – outside the poll’s +/- 3.07 percent margin of error.

Were the 2012 campaign a Hitchcock movie, Mitt Romney would be the MacGuffin—a device that drives a lot of plot gyrations but proves inconsequential in itself. Then again, Barack Obama could be, too. Our down-to-the-wire presidential contest is arguably just a narrative speed bump in the scenario that has been gathering steam throughout the Obama presidency: the resurgence of the American right, the most determined and coherent political force in America. No matter who is elected president, what Romney calls severe conservatism will continue to consolidate its hold over one of our two major parties.

Romney campaign files federal

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s campaign has filed a federal lawsuit in Wisconsin to extend the amount of time military and overseas absentee ballots can be returned. The federal suit came on the heels a campaign request to the state’s Government Accountability Board to extend the deadline after at least 30 Wisconsin municipalities failed to send overseas ballots 45 days before the election, which is required under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voter Act (UOCAVA). The campaign proceeded with the suit against GAB after their initial request was denied.

Washington - Retail sales in the U.S. rose more than projected in September, reflecting broad-based gains that indicate household spending helped bolster economic growth last quarter. The 1.1 percent advance followed a revised 1.2 percent increase in August that was the biggest since October 2010 and larger than previously reported, Commerce Department figures showed today in Washington. The median forecast of 77 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a 0.8 percent rise. A drop in joblessness and firming home prices are leading to gains in confidence that may help chains such as Target Corp. (TGT) and TJX Cos. (TJX) keep

Day by day, the public is learning more about what happened in the Sept. 11 attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three others. There is still much confusion. But last week we gleaned two key points from a State Department briefing and a House Oversight and Government Reform committee hearing: • Initial White House statements that the attack was triggered by a demonstration over an anti-Muslim video were wrong. There was no demonstration that night. • Security forces protecting the U.S. Consulate were quickly overwhelmed by a huge band of armed and well-trained militants (Snip) What we can't

After Mitt Romney promised to aggressively crackdown against Chinese companies that cheat American businesses, the New York Times, along with other mainstream media organizations, have tried to paint Mitt Romney as a hypocrite by digging up companies in which Bain Capital has a stake. They conveniently ignoring that President Barack Obama also has investments in some of the exact same Chinese companies. The U.S. Supreme Court agreed on Monday to consider whether Arizona can demand that voters show proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. The high court will not hear the case before the Nov. 6 U.S. election, ensuring that the disputed registration requirement in Arizona will not be in effect. The legal dispute over the registration requirement dates back to 2004 when Arizona voters passed a ballot initiative, Proposition 200, designed to stop illegal immigrants from voting. The measure amended state election laws to require voters to show proof of citizenship to register to vote, as

Beirut - Syrian President Bashar Assad ordered on Monday immediate repairs to a historic mosque in the city of Aleppo, a move likely aimed at containing Muslim outrage after fierce fighting between rebels and regime forces set parts of the mosque on fire over the weekend. Government troops had been holed up inside the 12th century Umayyad mosque, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in downtown Aleppo for several months before rebels fighting to topple Assad launched a push to liberate it this week. I taught in an urban school with a racially and ethnically diverse student population. It's been a few years since I taught Advanced Placement Literature and Composition, but my memories of the rigors of the course and my students are sharp as ever. The class challenged students to do college-level work in more literary genres than you could shake a syllabus at (if you'll pardon my ending with a preposition). When the College Board released scores at the beginning of the summer, I didn't expect to see any one racial or ethnic group

How many times have we heard that Texans are independent and determined to stay that way? It’s never been more true than it is now. In an incredibly inspiring story, Texas talk show host Michael Berry is heading an effort to bring more than 1000 of his listeners across the country to Florida to help win the state for Mitt Romney. Florida’s 29 electoral votes may be the key to winning the election on November 6. The listeners will meet in Texas, caravan from there at their own expense, and pick up other listeners along the way.

The Boston Globe reported Monday that Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren raised $12.1 million for her campaign in the 3rd quarter ending September 30, 2012. That brings the total raised to $36 million. Yet more than 40% of these funds--an estimated $16 million--have come online via two websites that do not have industry-standard protections and are vulnerable to fraud and illegal foreign national donations. Today's report, which will be available for full public scrutiny by Tuesday morning, includes $8.7 million raised between August 18 and September 30 after her most recent Federal Election Commission filing--an August 17, 2012 pre-primary report

Bin Laden may be dead, but Al Qaeda isn’t. Obama keeps bragging that we have Al Qaeda on the run, but it seems like his definition of “On the run” is giving them weapons. This story comes, from of all places, the New York Times, and when the Grey Lady is admitting that Obama’s policy is completely screwed up, then it’s bad. Most of the arms shipped at the behest of Saudi Arabia and Qatar to supply Syrian rebel groups fighting the government of Bashar al-Assad are going to hard-line Islamic jihadists

A few weeks ago, I was asked to emcee a fund-raising dinner for Rep. Todd Akin, who is rather famously running for U.S. Senate in Missouri, the state in which I live. Although I did not hesitate to accept the invite, I found myself resisting the urge to promote the event, and my involvement in it. The reason was simple enough. I worried about the reaction of my moderate to liberal friends and family. After scolding myself for my indecision, I went ahead and posted the details of the fundraiser on Facebook with this explanation:

The Not-So-Great Communicator:

For a man who was elected president partly on his ability to give a great speech, Barack Obama has been at times a surprisingly poor communicator in office and on the campaign trail. That may have been most evident earlier this month during the first presidential debate. But Obama generally hasn't been as impressive at getting his message across in his four years in the White House as he was during the campaign that put him there. His relatively few press briefings have drawn mediocre reviews

Appropriate topics to broach during a live, televised presidential debate: The economy. The jobs situation. Pizza toppings? Not so much. Pizza Hut has canned its roundly panned stunt to get the question “sausage or pepperoni?” asked during Tuesday’s town hall-style event. Instead, the company now plans to run the promotion online. Last week, the pizza pie purveyor told customers that it would give away free pizzas for life -- one large pie weekly for 30 years -- or $15,600 to anyone brave (or dumb) enough to ask President Obama or Mitt Romney their choice of meat.

The president replied in a tweet that he intends to vote early in person in his home state of Illinois on Oct. 25 - three days after the final presidential debate. Apparently, the two presidential campaigns want to muzzle Candy Crowley in the second debate tomorrow night. The Post reports that while both the campaigns agreed that the debate moderator would get no follow-ups or otherwise intervene, Crowley, in what seems to have been a communication lapse, didn’t agree to that arrangement.
