A new survey from Public Policy Polling (PPP) shows Mitt Romney with a 1-point lead in Florida thanks to strong gains among independent voters. The poll from the Democratic-affiliated firm finds Romney leading President Obama with 49 percent support to 48 among likely voters. (Snip) Voters now rate Romney positively at 50 percent favorable and 47 unfavorable, a shift from the last poll when he was negative at 44-51. The last poll put Obama at 51 favorable to 47 unfavorable, and those figures have shifted to 48 positive, 50 negative.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — To prepare for the second round of the presidential debates, President Obama retreated here this weekend — to the environs of this historic village where actors in 18th century garb wander about spouting off in colonial diction.(snip) This time, instead of focusing on the nuts and bolts of debate facts — no one thinks the president needs to bone up on American troop withdrawals from Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley, for instance — Mr. Obama is practicing how to challenge Mr. Romney, something he inexplicably shied away from in Denver

When ArmyLt. Col. Matthew Dooley last year began teaching a class to fellow officers on the dangers of radical Islam, he seemed to have landed in a perfect spot. A highly rated armor officer who saw combat in Iraq, Col. Dooley planned to instruct for several years at the Joint Forces Staff College within the National Defense University, then seek command of a combat battalion – a ticket to better postings and higher rank. Today, Col. Dooley finds himself at a dead end while being targeted for criticism by American Islamic groups

For relatives anxious about a frail loved one in hospital, few things could surely sound more reassuring than a ‘care pathway’. It sounds like a well-worked-out schedule for providing the best possible approach to treating a patient. Accordingly, when relatives have been asked to sign up to the Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP), that’s precisely what they thought they were agreeing to.(Snip) In practice, however, the LCP has turned into something quite different. For while in some cases it has been used properly as intended, with numerous others it has become, instead, a backdoor form of euthanasia.

President Obama is once again engaged in intense debate preparation at his resort in Williamsburg, Va., getting ready for his rematch with Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. “I’m not going to get into details about strategic changes that he might make. But I just encourage you to watch and show up. I think it will be an interesting debate,” Obama senior campaign strategist David Axelrod said. The president is under pressure to make a strong showing in the rematch, especially after polls are beginning to show Romney edging closer to Obama in the swing states.

Now you know what Thanksgiving with my family is like.(Snip)The loser of the vice-presidential debate was, of course, Barack Obama. In contrast to the pair on the undercard slugging it out, the president’s limp performance the other night was even more inexplicable and inexcusable. The president was no doubt warned not to sigh, but his entire demeanor was a sigh. The fact that one diffident debate by the president could throw his whole race into crisis shows that nobody madly loves Obama anymore. With his aloof presidency, he shook off the deep attachments from 2008, and now his support

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – President Barack Obama is developing a bit of debate prep repetition, publicly at least. Mr. Obama took a break Sunday from studying and engaging in mock sessions with his staff at a five-star waterfront resort here to deliver pizzas to one of his nearby campaign offices and make a couple phone calls to supporters, just as he did while preparing for his first debate in Henderson, Nev., two weeks ago. (Snip) He then took a seat between two women and picked up the phone. “I’m gonna do my work,” he said, adding: “Everybody’s so serious!”

Williamsburg, Virginia– Amid a picture-perfect autumn weekend at an expansive Virginia resort and golf club, President Barack Obama spent much of Sunday sequestered indoors as he and his aides prepared for a pivotal second debate with rival Mitt Romney. In his one public appearance of the day – a quick trip to a local campaign field office to greet supporters – Obama reported his debate practice "is going great" but declined to elaborate further.Campaign aides are also revealing few details about the debate preparations to the dozen or so reporters who have followed Obama to the Kingsmill Resort

The carefully coordinated and heavily armed September 11th strike upon the American Consulate in Libya contradicted President Obama’s repeated narrative that, thanks to his tough policies and actions, al-Qaeda has been defeated. And although misrepresented by U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice as a “spontaneous” outbreak” of violence provoked by a “hateful” movie denigrating Muslim prophet Muhammad, he and other high members of his administration knew full well and early on that this was patently untrue. Congressional testimony reveals that the White House had been informed on day one that al-Qaeda terrorists were responsible for the murders of U.S. Ambassador

Last week, Sherrilyn Ifill, Maryland School of Law professor and Chairwoman of the U.S. Programs Board of George Soros's Open Society Foundations, penned an op-ed for CNN entitled, "Why black voters reject [Mitt] Romney." In the article, Ifill states: It’s not enough to say that blacks are voting for President Obama because he’s black and that racial solidarity trumps politics. Ifill uses a NBC/Wall Street Journal poll taken early in the summer that put black support for Romney at 0% to back her claims of black hatred of the Romney/Ryan Republican ticket.

If you've been paying attention to the Drudge Report lately, you've seen headlines linking to Real Clear Politics data showing how the presidential race has tightened since President Obama and Mitt Romney debated in Denver. Rather surprisingly, the folks at USA Today not only noticed, but also published an article Sunday with the shocking headline, "Obama, Romney Nearly Tied in Electoral College'': Obama leads in states with 201 electoral votes, according to state polling averages compiled by the RealClearPolitics website. Romney leads in states with 191 electoral votes. [...]

Mitt Romney and congressional Republicans are doing their best to portray the assault on the U.S. Consulate in Libya and its aftermath as a signal foreign policy disaster for Barack Obama. But my bet is that when historians look back on Obama’s mistakes in the last four years, they will focus on something entirely different: his catastrophic mishandling of the revolution in Syria.(snip)Obama’s Syria policy began in 2009 with the misguided idea of reaching out to the dictator. Within a month of his inauguration, Obama reversed the Bush administration’s approach of isolating Assad.

Arlen Specter was one of a kind, a walking contradiction who could infuriate his colleagues one day and earn their admiration the next. He was brilliant, irascible, dignified and coarse, alternately a rabid partisan — ask Anita Hill — and an aisle-crossing defector — ask Robert Bork — who cast big votes boosting presidents from both parties during his Senate tenure, which stretched from 1980 to 2010. He was often referred to as “Snarlin’ Arlen” for his combative style, but never to his face. He would fight bitterly with fellow senators on the floor, yet when they were ensnared in

As Eliana Johnson points out over at NRO, this morning, David Axelrod continued to throw Hillary Clinton and the State Department under the bus, doubling down on the story that Joe Biden's royal "we" at the veep debate referred only to a party of two -- himself and the President -- not knowing about the requests for enhanced security at Benghazi. Apparently, in the Obama presidency, the buck doesn't stop with the President . . . it stops with, in Axelrod's words, "the security folks at the State Department."

A spokesman for Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney has condemned a racist t-shirt seen at a Romney/Ryan campaign event in Ohio. Frail and vulnerable elderly people are being forced to rely on care in their homes from workers with convictions for theft and violence, an investigation has found. Private care agencies, fulfilling contracts for councils across the country, have been employing convicted criminals to work in elderly people’s homes. In some cases, the criminals have been sent in without police checks or risk assessments being carried out, publicly available records show. One agency in Birmingham hired 23 people with criminal records, including assault and theft.

Dallas - If in four weeks a president-elect Mitt Romney is seeking a Treasury secretary, he should look here, to Richard Fisher, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. Candidate Romney can enhance his chance of having this choice to make by embracing a simple proposition from Fisher: Systemically important financial institutions (SIFIs), meaning too-big-to-fail (TBTF) banks, are “too dangerous to permit.” Romney almost did this in the first debate when he said Dodd-Frank’s designation of TBTF banks makes them “effectively guaranteed by the federal government” and constitutes “the biggest kiss that’s been given to — to New York

nteresting contrast. As I reported in August, Copley Township is still owed $10,549 for the expenses it incurred during a 2008 campaign stop by then-vice presidential hopeful Joe Biden. Copley’s fiscal officer, Janice Marshall, sent a bill to the “Obama for America” campaign but never received a penny. And Fairlawn rang up $34,146 in police overtime and other expenses this summer when President Barack Obama brought his re-election campaign to town and spent the night at the Hilton Akron/Fairlawn.(Snip) Now along comes Mitt Romney, dishing out his own election patter in Cuyahoga Falls on a Tuesday night in October. Same deal? Far from it.

Stressing the importance of manufacturing in a state with many blue-collar workers, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan used separate appearances in Ohio on Saturday to fault the Obama administration for failing to label China a "currency manipulator" by delaying a currency report until after the Nov. 6 election. Administration officials announced Friday they would be delaying the release of a currency report due Oct. 15 that could have labeled China a country that purposely devalues its money to gain a competitive advantage in its trade practices. Romney has repeatedly highlighted the China currency issue during the campaign.

The US health system and the NHS have much to learn from each other, experts say. The academics - from Harvard University in the US and the UK-based Nuffield Trust think tank - suggested the two systems should share ideas as they were both going through major reforms. Their Lancet review acknowledged there were a lot of differences. But in terms of finance, organisation and IT there was also some common ground they could learn from, it added. For instance, the experts point out that the NHS, which is in the middle of a £20bn savings drive in England, could
