The job title is soigneur, an elegant sounding name for the person on a professional cycling team who is assigned some unglamorous work: massaging the muscles of the cyclists, laundering their clothes, booking their hotel rooms and preparing their food. YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan received several standing ovations from a crowd of about 500 Saturday at Youngstown State University as he doubled down on positions he has held on key issues for much of his political career and throughout the campaign. "We have a big choice to make," said Mr. Ryan, a congressman from Wisconsin. "This isn't an ordinary election. We're not just deciding who's going to be president for the next four years. We're deciding what kind of country are we going to have for the next generation." Mr. Ryan

A militant charged with liaising between Al-Qaeda and its North African branch Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has been killed in an ambush by Algerian forces, security officials said on Sunday. Boualem Bekai, who was known as Khaled El Mig, was killed on Friday at Azrou some 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the Tizi Ouzou region east of the capital, the APS news agency cited the officials as saying. His identity was confirmed on Sunday by his family who collected his body from the hospital at Tizi Ouzou, the sources said. The 45-year-old AQIM member became an Islamist

BENGHAZI, Libya — A month after the killing of the American ambassador ignited a public outcry for civilian control of Libya’s fractious militias, that hope has been all but lost in a tangle of grudges, rivalries and egos. Scores of disparate militias remain Libya’s only effective police force but have stubbornly resisted government control, a dynamic that is making it difficult for either the Libyan authorities or the United States to catch the attackers who killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens.

Five Royal Marines have been charged with murder over the alleged slaying of an injured Taliban fighter. Another four have been released without charge, pending further inquiries over the incident in Afghanistan in 2011. The five men charged remain in custody. The next stage of the process is likely to be trial by Court Martial. The Royal Military arrested the troops after video footage on a Marine’s laptop allegedly showed members of 3 Commando Brigade discussing what to do with a wounded gunman inside a compound in Helmand more than a year ago.

Television censors labor to strip away naughty bits from your favorite television shows. Do they also exist to protect President Obama's reelection chances? The fall premiere of ABC's "Last Man Standing" sitcom starring Tim Allen felt the censor's sting, and the censoring had nothing to do with George Carlin's infamous seven dirty words. On Last Man Standing’s Season 2 premiere, set to air November 2...

President Barack Obama is likely to “come out swinging” when he debates Mitt Romney this week in an effort to curb his Republican challenger’s momentum about three weeks before the Nov. 6 election, Republican Senator Rob Portman of Ohio said today. Surrogates for the candidates on the Sunday talk shows predicted a more aggressive Obama will show up for the second presidential debate in New York on Oct. 16. “I think President Obama is going to come out swinging,” Portman, a Romney supporter, said on ABC’s “This Week” program.

Saturday Night Live's opener took on the vice presidential debate, with Jason Sudeikis as an overly enthusiastic Joe Biden and Taran Killam as his thirsty, "shark-eyed" opponent Paul Ryan. The skit poked fun at Biden's fantastically over-the-top debate performance, his laughter and incredulous facial expressions. (Snip)"A reminder that your performance tonight is extremely likely to affect the outcome of the election, so just have fun with it," Raddatz begins the skit. "Do I sound like Jim Lehrer? As the investigation into the U.S. Consulate attacks in Libya continues, Senator Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., accused the Obama administration of either "misleading" Americans about the nature of the attack, or of being "incredibly incompetent." Graham said that evidence is "overwhelming" that there was no riot. He said he was briefed by members of the intelligence community who are on the ground in Libya and was told that it was a "sustained attack that lasted for six or eight hours, using heaving weapons." Add the ghostwriter of Sarah Palin's 2009 memoir, "Going Rogue" to the already swollen ranks of conservatives still shaking their heads over Palin's vice presidential nomination. "Whatever anyone's opinion of her faults and failings, to tap someone to be a Veep candidate a few days before the Convention was really not the best plan," Lynn Vincent, a veteran ghostwriter of Christian memoirs who is credited as a collaborator on Palin's book, told The New Yorker in this week's issue. Vincent's comment came in the course of a profile of the ghostwriter, a wildly successful author

Washington - The father of Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya who was killed in the attack in Benghazi last month, said his son’s death shouldn’t be politicized in the presidential campaign. “It would really be abhorrent to make this into a campaign issue,” Jan Stevens, 77, said in a telephone interview from his home in Loomis, California, as he prepares for a memorial service for his son next week. (Snip) The ambassador’s father, a lawyer, said politicians should await the findings of a formal investigation before making accusations or judgments.

Washington - Retail sales in the U.S. probably rose in September as demand for automobiles kept improving and discounters benefitted from a final rush of back-to-school shopping, economists said before reports this week. The 0.8 percent increase would follow a 0.9 percent gain in August, according to the median forecast of 63 economists surveyed by Bloomberg ahead of Commerce Department figures tomorrow. Other reports may show fuel prices pushed up the cost of living and manufacturing stabilized. HARRISBURG, Pa. -- For most of his 30 years as Pennsylvania's longest-serving U.S. senator and prominent moderate in Congress, Arlen Specter was a Republican, though often at odds with the GOP leadership. He helped end the Supreme Court hopes of former federal appeals Judge Robert H. Bork, who was nominated by Ronald Reagan. Decades later, he was one of only three Republicans in Congress to vote for President Barack Obama's stimulus. Source and text edited to site style.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Charlene Lamb testified that on September 11, after the “full-scale assault” in Libya — “unprecedented in its size and intensity” — began about 9:40 p.m. Libyan time (4:40 p.m. Washington time), she was “in our Diplomatic Security Command Center [in Washington] monitoring multiple open lines with our agents [in Libya] for much of the attack.” On Friday, a CNN reporter asked Hillary Clinton what she was doing as the attack occurred, and Clinton responded with a 400-word answer that avoided the question. Here was the colloquy:

Mitt Romney’s promise to replace Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke if elected president is stirring anxiety among some financial analysts — who fear such a move could send the nation’s markets tumbling. Romney, throughout his White House campaign, has argued he knows what needs to be done to get the economy running at full steam. But the concern among market watchers is that if Romney dumps Bernanke, whose term expires at the beginning of 2014, he would remove the person who some believe is the weak economy's primary lifeline.

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan are campaigning through Ohio and other critical swing states while President Barack Obama crams for the second presidential debate on Tuesday. Yesterday, Romney addressed a crowd of 11,000 supporters in Lebanon, Ohio, just one of the many large crowds he has been drawing across the state in recent days. Meanwhile, Obama, who was criticized for not preparing enough for the first presidential debate on Oct. 3, is parked at a golf resort in Virginia to practice.

Broken windows at four banks and a drug store appear to be the work of a few dozen Occupy Portland members. The vandalism spree took place Thursday night. Police were called and some suspects were detained but no arrests have been made yet. On Thursday night a group of about 40 people was seen congregating in the parking lot of Umpqua Bank in Portland. Police were called and while still en route learned the crowd was roving to other banks, smashing windows as they went. Eventually four banks--Umpqua, Chase, Wells Fargo, US Bank--had smashed windows along with a Walgreens drug

The assault on an American diplomatic post in Libya that left four Americans dead provided surrogates for both presidential candidates with fodder for political attacks Sunday, two days ahead of a critical debate between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama. On CNN's "State of the Union," Romney adviser Ed Gillespie echoed an attack line the GOP nominee delivered last week, insisting that Vice President Joe Biden's assertions at the vice-presidential debate didn't match congressional testimony from State Department officials."Vice President Biden directly contradicted the sworn testimony of the State Department in the debate the other night.

Observing Vice President Joe Biden’s repeated sneering at debate opponent Paul Ryan, some marveled at the voluble politician’s lack of protocol. Was he on pills, booze or just becoming a caricature of his irascible self in old age? In fact, there is a better way to interpret this behavior which is impossible to completely dismiss because it’s rooted in known political beliefs and core values. After Barack’s strangely flaccid first-debate performance, it’s understandable why Biden felt a need to go on the offensive.
