Obama behind the eight ball

With two disastrous debate performances behind it, the Obama-Biden ticket is in trouble. President Obama’s supporters assumed the win was in the bag. Though Mitt Romney is taking the lead in national polls, Democratic strategists confidently argued Mr. Romney lacked a path to electoral victory because he would have to “run the table” of the swing states in order to win. Mr. Romney is turning out to be more of a pool shark than they expected. The latest battleground polls show a Romney surge in the critical swing states. The nine most noted swing states are Florida (29 electoral votes),

Winston Churchill's bitter

John Reith, the BBC’s founding father, had always disliked Winston Churchill and ended up loathing him. After the war, he remarked: “A whole lot of people could have done it better and more cheaply.” Even when Churchill was dead, Reith refused to walk past his commemorative plaque in the floor of Westminster Abbey. The feeling had been mutual. Churchill referred to the puritanical Scot who towered over him as “that Wuthering Height”, and wrote: “I absolutely hate him.” These two gigantic egos were always likely to collide spectacularly. Both men had enormous self-belief and very little self-doubt. This was a

Behind the riders, the drugs and the secrets there were the women. And they made choices, too, choices that may have set in motion the unraveling of the greatest doping scandal in the history of sport. In 2004, Lance Armstrong's most trusted teammate George Hincapie wrote an email to the man who used to be Armstrong's closest friend on the bike circuit, Frankie Andreu. It said: "I cannot understand how you can just sit around and let betsy try and take down the whole team." It was a reference to Andreu's wife, Betsy, who had started doing something

The Nobel Peace Bribe and

In 2009, when Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, it was pointed out that his nomination for the award almost perfectly coincided with his inauguration as president–that is, he was given the award not for anything he had done, but rather for what the Nobel Committee wanted him to do. Hoping for American surrender in the Middle East and capitulation in the war on terror, the Nobel Committee assumed Obama shared their penchant for appeasement and decided to nudge him along. Since there are often candidates for the prize that actually deserve it,

The Mystery of Benghazi

TWENTY-FOUR hours after the American compound in Benghazi was attacked and our ambassador murdered, the tragedy seemed more likely to help President Obama’s re-election campaign than to damage it. The White House already enjoyed more public credibility on foreign policy than on almost any other issue. When Mitt Romney reacted to the attack with a partisan broadside, portraying a news release sent out by the Cairo embassy before any violence began as a White House apology to the attackers, the president’s path forward seemed clear. He would be disciplined and careful, show anger and steel but also coolness under pressure,

After a week of swing state polls going Obama’s way, Romney finally added a wave of strong showings in the battleground states while preserving his lead in the national polls.(Snip for graph)This is probably Romney’s best polling day of this election. Not only did he hold leads in the battleground state polls but Romney made relatively large gains compared to pre-DNC surveys. And the North Carolina poll where Obama led was partially conducted prior to the debate and Romney led by 6 points in the post-debate sample. Romney even led a poll in Nevada,

Liberalism, Manic & Depressive

n the first presidential debate of 2012, we saw, up close and personal, what Harvey Mansfield called in last week’s issue the ennui of Barack Obama. Obama’s ennui is related to his dislike for the real challenges of governing. More fundamentally, his ennui reflects his declinism. What’s exciting about governing for the next four years if it’s just going to involve managing austerity at home and decline abroad? It’s a depressing prospect. Obama is depressed because today’s liberalism is depressing. Obama is world-weary because modern liberalism is world-weary. Hope and change was just campaign talk.

President Obama spent his valuable time this morning weighing in on the Nicki Minaj/Mariah Carey feud. No, I’m not making that up for the sake of a joke. It’s a real story. Earlier today, President Obama called into Y100s Michael YO! Show, where he weighed in on a very serious topic plaguing the pop world – the American Idol fight between judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj. What better person to give their opinion on the American Idol spat, other than the top American himself. The president told Y100 that he believes that the

Former President Clinton has been working overtime to drag Barack Obama across the finish line in this year’s election. (snip) To save his political career, Obama would throw his own grandmother under the bus she supposedly rode to her job at the bank everyday because his grandfather thought it would be racist to give her a ride. And Biden’s 2016 presidential ambitions (no, I’m not joking) provide him with an extra incentive to see Hillary Clinton become the fall-gal for Benghazi. How is Bill Clinton taking this? According to author Ed Klein, he is not taking it lying down.

At least five Afghan security staff have been killed in suicide and roadside bomb attacks. At least three intelligence officers were killed by a suicide bomber outside an intelligence agency building in the southern province, Kandahar. Some reports said four Afghans were killed in the attack, as well as two members of the international coalition. In neighbouring Zabul province, a roadside bomb killed two policemen and wounded three others. In the Kandahar attack, a bomber, reportedly on foot, targeted Afghan intelligence agents and international staff at an entry checkpoint to the National Directorate of Security (NDS) in Maruf district.

Turns out it was a crappy idea. The principal of a Hell’s Kitchen HS that used to be among the most violent in the city had students using wooden toilet plungers as hall passes this school year. The half-baked scheme by the second-year principal at the HS of Graphic Communication Arts that placed 2-foot-long plungers in every classroom last month immediately plunged the school into chaos, a source said. “The kids were using the plungers to whack each other, to pop ceiling tiles in the bathroom,” the source said. “They were sticking it in the toilet and then flinging them

Former President Clinton has been working overtime to drag Barack Obama across the finish line in this year’s election. Clinton has been hands-down President Obama’s most effective advocate. His personal credibility may not be substantial, but unlike Obama, Clinton produced a non-disastrous presidency. Thus, his overall credibility vastly exceeds that of the current president. So how is Obama awarding Clinton for his heavy lifting? By throwing Clinton’s wife under the Benghazi bus, it appears. On Friday, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters that responsibility for the consulate in Libya

To call Biden an ass-clown after last Thursday’s debate with Rep. Paul Ryan is to insult bottoms, donkeys and Bozos far and wide. I’m surprised Joe didn’t fart loudly

Cincinatti - With a sudden infusion of cash and a major investment of time, Mitt Romney has redoubled his efforts to win Ohio, trying to overcome President Obama's months-long lead in the crucial campaign battleground. Ohio has been on the winning side of every presidential election since 1964, largely for the same reason that consumer-products companies like to use the state as a test market — it closely resembles the nation in miniature. But the resemblance is not perfect; the state has leaned just slightly more Republican than the country as a whole, meaning that a GOP nominee who cannot

The defining image of the 2012 vice presidential debate was Joe Biden's smirk -- and that's just fine with Republicans. For months, Mitt Romney has been attempting to convince voters he is the adult needed to clean up the mess President Obama has made of the economy. (Snip) "We're confident that the more people see the debate, the more voters are going to view Biden as a petulant clown," a Romney campaign official told The Washington Examiner. On October 3rd, Mitt Romney gave an epic performance at the first presidential debate in Denver. According to Gallup, Americans, by a 52-point margin--the most ever recorded--said Romney won the debate against Obama. In the aftermath, Romney has taken a steady lead in most national and state polls. There is no need to dissect here the details of the debate or the candidates' performance. More interesting to me is what didn't happen after the debate. There wasn't the usual push-back from the Obama campaign. This is highly unusual. Since the first campaign in 2008, in the face of any setback
