PORTSMOUTH — His voice slightly hoarse after three days of Ohio oration, Mitt Romney pledged today to provide jobs to a portion of the state still struggling to recover from the Great Recession. The Republican presidential nominee, on the tail end of an Ohio-focused week, spoke of promises that resonate in culturally-conservative southern Ohio, pledging to develop coal and nuclear energy, cut taxes, and maintain a strong military. Romney delighted a crowd of several thousand gathered under a warm autumn sun on the banks of the Ohio River

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Every week after Labor Day is touted as a critical week in presidential politics. The coming week may actually live up to that characterization. During the next eight days, President Obama and Mitt Romney will meet for their final two debates — Tuesday night at Hofstra University on Long Island and the following Monday in Florida. At that point, it should be clear whether the momentum that Romney picked up from the first debate in Denver has stalled or whether he continues to gain ground against the president. In the meantime

President Barack Obama has admitted that giving the green light to the raid that killed Osama bin Laden was 'a flip of the coin' decision. The president revealed he was only 50 per cent confident that the man spotted by the C.I.A. living in an Abbottabad compound was the world's most wanted terrorist, according to a new book that weaves together accounts from Obama and top decision-makers on the events leading up to the daring operation and it's aftermath. 'This is 50–50,' Obama said, silencing the small group of senior officials gathered in the situation room.

The State Department has released a transcript of a briefing that two high-ranking department officials gave to a number of reporters via conference call on October 9 (Tuesday). I am not certain about this, but I believe the transcript was only made public today. You should read it in its entirety; it is the most detailed description I have seen of the events in Benghazi on September 11. While this is by no means clear, it appears that the State Department may have released the transcript as part of the escalating

The chances of Britain leaving the EU rose dramatically last night after it emerged that one of David Cameron’s closest Cabinet allies believes it is time to tell Brussels bluntly: ‘We are ready to quit.’ Education Secretary Michael Gove has told friends that, if there was a referendum today on whether the UK should cut its ties with Brussels, he would vote to leave. He wants Britain to give other EU nations an ultimatum: ‘Give us back our sovereignty or we will walk out.’ Mr Gove insists the UK could thrive as a free trading nation on its own, like other non-EU nations in Europe such as Norway and Switzerland.

Surviving slavery, segregation and discrimination has forged a special pride in African-Americans. Now some are saying this hard-earned pride has become prejudice in the form of blind loyalty to President Barack Obama. Are black people supporting Obama mainly because he's black? If race is just one factor in blacks' support of Obama, does that make them racist? Can blacks' support for Obama be compared with white voters who may favor his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, because he's white? These questions have long animated conservatives who are frustrated by claims that white

Why a Duranty Prize? What are we doing here? A couple of years ago Roger Kimball and I came up with the idea that The New Criterion and PJ Media should join forces to give an annual prize in honor — or dishonor, as the case may be — of the somewhat notorious Moscow bureau chief of the New York Times between 1922 and 1936, Walter Duranty. I say “somewhat notorious” because not too many people outside the insular media world know who he was — but they should. (snip) for some fourteen years Walter Duranty, then the

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is dismissing Democrat Joe Biden's performance during Thursday night's debate between the two running mates in Danville, Ky., suggesting he was combative without offering anything of substance. (Snip) And Romney seemed to suggest he didn't think much of Biden's reaction to many of Ryan's answers, with the vice president responding on television's split screens with dismissive chuckles and eye rolls when his rival was speaking. "There was one person on stage last night who was thoughtful and respectful and steady and poised, the kind of person you'd want to turn to in a crisis," Romney

Bamako - Al Qaeda-linked Islamists in Mali threatened on Saturday to "open the doors of hell" for French citizens if France kept pushing for armed intervention to retake the rebel-held north. The renewed threats against French hostages and expatriates came as French-speaking nations met in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where French President Francois Hollande was expected to urge the rapid deployment of an African-led force to rout the Islamists. Hollande said the threat would not deter France's determination to quash the Islamists in Mali.

Youngstown, Ohio - Speaking in a heavily Democratic area of Ohio Saturday morning, Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan attacked how President Barack Obama’s administration’s is dealing with China. “The administration had their eighth chance to label China a currency manipulator – it's due in two days – they say they are going to push this deadline off until after the election. That’s eight opportunities to say, ‘you know what, play fair with us, trade with us fairly,’” Ryan told the crowd at Youngstown State University, implying the decision to delay release was political. On Friday, the U.S. Treasury announced

A little heads up for all of you. The Benghazi Massacre scandal is really taking root within even the Mainstream Media now – due in great part to Vice President Joe Biden’s oddly phrased throw-the-State Department-under-the-bus remarks during Thursday’s debate. It is my understanding some Senate DEMOCRATS pushed for more timely hearings on the issue (as in BEFORE the November election) but Reid has, for now, pushed any chance of that happening until after the election. His doing so may cost him the Majority position even if the Dems maintain control of the Senate.

A judge lamented his 'pathetic' sentencing powers as he jailed a drunken yob who left an aerospace engineer paralysed from the neck down for less than three years. Matthew Edmonds, 33, was left with only some limited movement in his arms after he was punched in the street by Samuel Evans. Thug Evans was already subject to a suspended jail term for a previous assault when he lashed out at Mr Edmonds, causing him to fall and hit his head on a concrete floor, Gloucester Crown Court heard. Evans was sentenced to a total of 34 months in jail after admitting inflicting grievous bodily harm

Benghazi, Libya - A police car exploded on Saturday during a failed assassination attempt on a police colonel in the eastern city of Benghazi, a Libyan police official said. Antique, 1950s-era American cars have been a quintessentially Cuban sight on the meandering streets of Havana for decades, but nowadays these ancient machines seem to be taking over the island’s road system because, in fact, they are. Almost every second vehicle you now see in Cuba seems to be a Plymouth Belvedere, an Oldsmobile Rocket, a Pontiac Star Chief, or some other mechanical emissary from the pre-revolutionary past, all grumbling and lurching through the leaden heat and humid Antillean air — further proof, if more proof were needed, that this island’s automotive mechanics belong to a rare breed of genius.

Bill Maher likes to deride conservatives for living “inside a bubble” where they consume news from only those with whom they agree and so are unaware of the “facts,” but he could just as well be describing the insular world of himself or others in the liberal media. Although the Tonight Show host did poke some fun at Paul Ryan and Sarah Palin, the bulk of his jokes targeted Biden including him saying it was "really smart" of moderator Martha Raddatz "to cut Joe off after that third scotch and soda" (video follows with transcript and commentary): (Snip) Well, I guess you know the Obama campaign has a new strategy. Lindsay Lohan came out in support of Mitt Romney yesterday. While most would, at first glance, write this off as gossip, it's the latest instance of an evolving trend that jeopardizes President Obama's chance at winning the White House. Lohan, by all accounts, is a typical low-information voter. And low information voters, like it or not, will decide this election. The first person to pick out this trend was Dave Weigel at Slate after sportswriter Buzz Bissinger endorsed Romney after his positive debate performance. Bissinger, Weigel notes, was a low information voter.

Paris — More than a year after resigning in disgrace as the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Kahn is seeking redemption with a new consulting company, the lecture circuit and a uniquely French legal defense to settle a criminal inquiry that exposed his hidden life as a libertine. High gasoline prices have become a political wild card in California, where several tight races are pivotal to Democrats’ slim hopes of winning back control of the House. Gas prices are always higher in California, but lately they’re bad even by Golden State standards, soaring a half-dollar in one week to average $4.67-per-gallon on Oct. 9. Republicans have sought political mileage from pump prices, and there is more to come. Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.), who faces a challenge from Democrat Raul Ruiz, is running an ad that begins with shots of gas price signs
