A Gulf state-owned bank has rolled out a new MasterCard that not only complies with Islamic laws banning loans with interest but also includes an embedded compass pointing the way to Mecca. (Snip) Shariah forbids “riba” or the charging of interest on loans because it could enable the rich to exploit the poor, encourages risk, and creates social and economic disharmony, according to Abed Awad, an expert on Islamic law who teaches at Rutgers and Pace universities. Scholars say Muslims can pay interest when there are no other options to get the funds they need. Credit card operators get around

A little heads up for all of you. The Benghazi Massacre scandal is really taking root within even the Mainstream Media now – due in great part to Vice President Joe Biden’s oddly phrased throw-the-State Department-under-the-bus remarks during Thursday’s debate. It is my understanding some Senate DEMOCRATS pushed for more timely hearings on the issue (as in BEFORE the November election) but Reid has, for now, pushed any chance of that happening until after the election. His doing so may cost him the Majority position even if the Dems maintain control of the Senate.

A judge lamented his 'pathetic' sentencing powers as he jailed a drunken yob who left an aerospace engineer paralysed from the neck down for less than three years. Matthew Edmonds, 33, was left with only some limited movement in his arms after he was punched in the street by Samuel Evans. Thug Evans was already subject to a suspended jail term for a previous assault when he lashed out at Mr Edmonds, causing him to fall and hit his head on a concrete floor, Gloucester Crown Court heard. Evans was sentenced to a total of 34 months in jail after admitting inflicting grievous bodily harm

San Francisco - The satellite that made up the secondary cargo of SpaceX's latest orbital mission has burnt up in the Earth's atmosphere after failing to make it into the correct orbit. (Snip) The Falcon was then due to make a second burn to get the OG2 satellite up to its required orbit, but safety regulations forced NASA to call a halt to any further orbital maneuvers. Orbcomm investigated using the satellite's own propulsion systems to get it into the right orbit, but instead opted to use the lower orbit for four days of testing, which the company proclaimed was

Benghazi, Libya - A police car exploded on Saturday during a failed assassination attempt on a police colonel in the eastern city of Benghazi, a Libyan police official said. The attack was the latest in a series of assassination attempts in Benghazi, the cradle of last year's uprising which ousted Muammar Gaddafi, and where U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens was killed in a September 11 attack on the U.S. consulate. Antique, 1950s-era American cars have been a quintessentially Cuban sight on the meandering streets of Havana for decades, but nowadays these ancient machines seem to be taking over the island’s road system because, in fact, they are. Almost every second vehicle you now see in Cuba seems to be a Plymouth Belvedere, an Oldsmobile Rocket, a Pontiac Star Chief, or some other mechanical emissary from the pre-revolutionary past, all grumbling and lurching through the leaden heat and humid Antillean air — further proof, if more proof were needed, that this island’s automotive mechanics belong to a rare breed of genius.

Bill Maher likes to deride conservatives for living “inside a bubble” where they consume news from only those with whom they agree and so are unaware of the “facts,” but he could just as well be describing the insular world of himself or others in the liberal media. Case in point: An NPR and Washington Post contributor who spends her days reading left-wing magazines and watching MSNBC, to the exclusion of any conservative news sources, so much so that she conceded: “My 14-year-old daughter can rattle off the entire MSNBC line-up, so that should tell you something about our

Lindsay Lohan came out in support of Mitt Romney yesterday. While most would, at first glance, write this off as gossip, it's the latest instance of an evolving trend that jeopardizes President Obama's chance at winning the White House. Lohan, by all accounts, is a typical low-information voter. And low information voters, like it or not, will decide this election. The first person to pick out this trend was Dave Weigel at Slate after sportswriter Buzz Bissinger endorsed Romney after his positive debate performance. Bissinger, Weigel notes, was a low information voter.

High gasoline prices have become a political wild card in California, where several tight races are pivotal to Democrats’ slim hopes of winning back control of the House. COLUMBUS- President Barack Obama's campaign is urging the U.S. Supreme Court not to consider the Ohio secretary of state's appeal in a dispute over early voting in the presidential battleground state. Attorneys say in a court filing the campaign said it submitted Friday that the court should let a lower ruling restoring early voting rights stand and not hear Secretary of State Jon Husted's appeal. Husted appealed a ruling reinstating early voting the three days before Election Day and returning discretion to local elections boards.
