When terrorists attacked the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11 of this year and killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans, there were no U.S. Marines deployed in Libya to defend U.S. diplomats, diplomatic facilities and classified information and equipment. However, says the State Department, a Marine Security Detachment was deployed on that day to carry out those duties at the U.S. Embassy in Bridgetown, Barbados. “U.S. Marine Security Guards serve at the U.S. Embassy in Bridgetown, and at other diplomatic missions around the world, to protect and safeguard American diplomacy,” Rebecca Ross, the

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Justice Department is going to allow members of federally recognized Indian tribes to possess eagle feathers, although that's a federal crime. This is a significant religious and cultural issue for many tribes, who were consulted in advance about the policy the department announced Friday. The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and other federal wildlife laws criminalize the killing of eagles and possession of feathers and bird parts, but the Constitution and federal laws also give tribes local sovereignty for self-government. Under the new policy, tribal members will not be prosecuted

Imagine, pre-9/11/12, that you were responsible for arranging the defense of the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Would you have considered American interests and personnel best protected by bringing in a local security outfit called the February 17 Martyrs Brigade? The question has yet to come up in House hearings, but I think it holds the key to the Obama administration's betrayal of the American people in "Benghazi-gate."

Thursday the Wall Street Journal’s Daniel Henninger published a column called “Obama and the L-word.” In it he described with disgust and dismay the way the Obama administration has been playing fast and loose with the term “liar” to describe Mitt Romney since Romney trounced Obama in last week’s presidential debate. Henninger noted that the use of the term cheapens and coarsens the political discourse in the US in a manner that is unprecedented in US politics. He also noted rightly that this is not part of the American political tradition.

CAIRO - Thousands of supporters and opponents of Egypt's new Islamist president clashed in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Friday in the first such violence since Mohammed Morsi took office more than three months ago, as liberal and secular activists erupted with anger accusing the Muslim Brotherhood of trying to take over the country. The two sides hurled stones and chunks of concrete and beat each other for sticks for several hours, leaving more than 100 injured, according to the state news agency. Two buses used by the Brotherhood to bring in supporters were set aflame behind the Egyptian Museum

The Secret Service has another embarrassment on its hands after one of its agents was found passed out on a Miami sidewalk and arrested — just hours after President Obama left town. Aaron Francis Engler was found early Friday morning by a Miami police officer who was responding to an unrelated call, CBS Miami reported. When the officer tried to stir the sleeping Secret Service man, he allegedly got belligerent -- hitting the cop on the chin. Other officers were called to help restrain him.

After Bill Clinton delivered his electrifying speech at the Democratic National Convention, many political observers concluded that the Clintons and Obamas had called a truce to their long-running feud. Under their armistice, Clinton agreed to make speeches and appear in TV commercials for Obama, acting like a booster rocket for the Democratic ticket in the remaining weeks of the campaign. It was a pretty picture, but as I have learned from several sources inside the Clinton camp, it turned out to be a case of wishful thinking. In fact, since the convention, Clinton and Obama have

A CIA document outlining a Mafia-connected plan to assassinate Cuban leader Fidel Castro for $150,000 is among thousands of Robert F. Kennedy documents made public Thursday, just days before the 50th anniversary of the Cuban missile crisis. In the 1964 plan, the mob and "patriotic Cuban exiles" eventually settled on a payment of $100,000 for assassinating Castro, $20,000 for his brother Raúl and $20,000 for revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara, plus $2,500 for expenses.

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Friday defended US support for Arab Spring nations as "a strategic necessity," vowing never to retreat amid a firestorm over the attack on a US mission in Libya. "We will not return to the false choice between freedom and stability. And we will not pull back our support for emerging democracies when the going gets rough," Clinton told a US think tank. "That would be a costly strategic mistake that would, I believe, undermine both our interests and our values."

The flu may make you sick this winter, but it could kill your cat. “Most people don’t realize that humans can pass diseases to animals,” said Dr. Christiane Löhr, an Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine pathologist. (Snip) Veterinary medicine researchers in Ohio followed up with a study, published last December, of a widespread H1N1 infection rate in 400 healthy cats, although few developed symptoms. Löhr and Truijillo are collecting data now to find out more about how this rare “reverse zoonosis” is happening. The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, discovered an alarmingly high and unexpected

The Obama administration’s effort to create government-sanctioned “sustainable communities” moved ahead this week, with the announcement of almost $5 million in planning grants. Seventeen poor communities across the U.S. will share the $4.95 million to draft plans for the “next generation" of public housing and other "sustainable" neighborhood improvements, such as better schools, anti-crime efforts, and greater access to health care and grocery stores.

Perhaps looking for another outlet to reach his base constituency, President Obama has agreed to appear as a guest with Jon Stewart on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” on Oct. 18. The President can probably expect to have to fend off some comic assaults from Mr. Stewart about his first debate performance; like other late-night hosts Mr. Stewart has eviscerated Mr. Obama for that appearance last week. But this guest appearance will come two days after the second presidential debate, and the story of the first may have been superseded by then –

If Vice President Joseph R. Biden smiled too much during his debate Thursday night, the White House said the blame lies with Republican Rep. Paul Ryan and his position on the Obama administration's 2009 stimulus plan. Many viewers said Mr. Biden appeared condescending or arrogant by smiling and laughing while Mr. Ryan, the vice presidential nominee from Wisconsin, was speaking during their debate in Danville, Ky. But White House press secretary Jay Carney said Friday the vice president likely couldn't help himself. "When Congressman Ryan starts attacking the administration over the [stimulus bill] and the split-screen shows the vice president smiling,

NEWTON, Iowa – Right under the picture of Marilyn Monroe, the muted television set at the Newton Family Restaurant was tuned to the Fox News recap of the vice-presidential debate as the on-screen headline blared, “The Gloves Are Off.” But chatting with the 7 a.m. Friday breakfast crowd, many of them night-shift workers and retirees, it was hard to find anyone who actually watched the bare-knuckle brawl between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan. That’s not entirely true, because Joyce Gilbreaith, a retiree sharing sausage patties and hash-brown potatoes with her husband Bill, admitted to me: “I watched about 10 minutes

In a disastrous question-answer session at the State Department yesterday, State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland first tried to claim that the murder of our ambassador to Libya may have been touched off by a demonstration about the YouTube video after all. Then she claimed that even though the State Department had no reports of any demonstration, the intelligence community may have told them that a demonstration happened. Then when Nuland was questioned on that astonishing assessment, she literally said she was “dumb.” Seriously. (Snip) Ms. Nuland: Look, I’m generally dumber than most of the rest of the government. In his debate with Paul Ryan, Vice President made so many false statements that a fact-checker hardly knows where to begin. In the interest of brevity, here are Biden’s three biggest whoppers:(Snip) FACT: The U.S. Embassy in Libya requested “an increase in the number of our permanently assigned RSO [Resident Security Officer] staff,” as well as “five TDY DS [Temporary Duty Diplomatic Security] agents for 45-60 days rotations in Benghazi.” According to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, “multiple U.S. federal government officials have confirmed to the Committee that, prior to the September 11 attack, the U.S. mission in Libya

The most damaging decisions we make in life are often a function of the lies we tell ourselves. For Barack Obama, I imagine those include "I am important -- I can do this job -- I am better than anyone else -- I am special, more than special, I am a great man and everyone loves me." When Barack Obama walked off that stage in Denver last week, he believed he had won the debate. Why wouldn't he? Just showing up has always been enough in the past. Remember, this is a man who became successful without having actually

Staring out at the ocean is a favorite pastime for beachgoers everywhere. But not many folks are accustomed to the ocean staring back. However, that's just what happened the other day for one Pompano Beach, Fla., man. Gino Covacci was strolling down the beach on Wednesday and saw something ball-like and went to investigate. When he rolled the object over, he found it was, indeed, a ball—a softball-sized blue eyeball. "It was nice and clear, it was fresh," Covacci told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.Covacci immediately handed over the specimen to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission,

A vice presidential debate analysis from a conservative media watchdog group found that debate moderator and ABC correspondent Martha Raddatz asked 19 pro-Obama questions Thursday night, but just 12 skewed Republican, a 40 percent to 25 percent margin. "Any moderator whose weighted questions favor liberals over conservatives by a 19-12 margin is biased," charged Brent Bozell, president of the Media Research Center. But he was quick to add that Raddatz, a virtual expert on the Iraq and Afghan war and also a White House correspondent, showed no bias in her specialty.

"The entire reason that this has become the political topic it is, is because of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan." Thus, Stephanie Cutter, President Obama's deputy campaign manager, speaking on CNN about an armed attack on the 9/11 anniversary that left a U.S. consulate a smoking ruin and killed four diplomatic staff, including the first American ambassador to be murdered in a third of a century. To discuss this event is apparently to "politicize" it and to distract from the real issues the American people are concerned about.

Sergey Lavrov insisted Friday the shipment complied with international law. He said the plane carried no weapons and that the "electric equipment for radars" of was a legitimate cargo. Lavrov added, however, that the cargo was of "dual purpose," meaning it could have civilian and military applications. He said the Russian company that sent it to Syria will demand that Turkey return it. (Snip) Erdogan refused to say how — or from whom — Turkey had

Two golden retrievers that were trapped in the woods on Cape Cod for two weeks were reunited with their owner after one of the dogs broke free and helped her track his four-legged brother. The pups, four-year-old Baxter and six-year-old Bailey, were tied together in front of their home in Sandwich, Massachusetts, on September 26 when they somehow got loose and took off into the woods. The dogs' owner, Penny Blackwell, was inconsolable. She put up fliers in the area and took to Facebook, posting a plea asking anyone who might have seen her pets to contact her.
