Joe Biden deftly defended President Barack Obama’s record at Thursday’s vice presidential debate, swatting down Paul Ryan, who didn’t score playing dodge ball. I’m a bit torn over whether Ryan’s biggest mistake was offering little about Mitt Romney’s vision for the nation or his refusal to answer some major questions about abortion, jobs and when U.S. troops should be sent to war. Ryan, 42, looked very junior to Biden, who turns 70 next month — that he could not help.

Michael Hayden, former CIA director, and Michael Chertoff, who served as Homeland Security chief, today blasted Vice President Joe Biden for making the U.S. intelligence community a scapegoat for 'the inconsistent and shifting response of the Obama Administration'. The tough joint statement was issued via the Romney campaign the morning after Biden stunned many in the intelligence community by insisting that the U.S. consulate in Benghazi did not ask for additional security before it was attacked on September 11, directly contradicting what security officials and diplomats have testified under oath. 'During the Vice Presidential debate, we were

At age 11, Ghulam was married off to 40-year-old Jaiz in a rural Afghan village, making her only one of more than 10 million young girls who are being forced to wed men old enough to be their fathers or grandfather every year. In an effort to start a global conversation about the devastating effects of early marriages, which are currently practiced in more than 50 developing countries, the United Nations designated October 11 as International Day of the Girl Child this year. To mark the occasion and draw attention to the problem of child brides, photojournalist Stephanie Sinclair

Vice President Joseph Biden speaks only for himself and President Barack Obama, and neither man was aware that U.S. officials in Libya had asked the State Department for more security before the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, a top White House official told The Cable. Biden has come under fire for saying at Thursday night's debate, "We weren't told they wanted more security. We did not know they wanted more security there." The Cable asked Deputy National Security Advisor for Communications Ben Rhodes whether Biden was speaking for the entire Obama administration,

October 12 marks the 12th anniversary of the bombing of the USS Cole. The grim milestone comes as President Obama faces mounting questions about his administration's dereliction of duty during the murderous attack on our consulate in Benghazi, Libya. And it comes just a day after resurgent al-Qaida thugs pulled off the drive-by assassination of a top Yemeni security official who worked at the U.S. embassy in Sanaa. These are not "bumps in the road." These are gravesites on the blood-spattered path to surrender. Seventeen U.S. sailors died in the brutal suicide attack on the guided

White House records reveal that the moderator of last night's vice presidential debate, Martha Raddatz, visited Vice President Joe Biden at his official residence on March 26, 2012. Raddatz is an employee of ABC News. As the records show, that day Raddatz visited the VPR (or, the vice president's residence) for a "Women's History Month Reception." That record was released on June 29, 2012. According to Biden's schedule released the day before the event, "the Vice President and Dr. Jill Biden will host a reception in honor of Women’s History Month at the Naval Observatory."

Media member after media member are coming down on Joe Biden's abysmal behavior at Thursday's vice presidential debate. Liberal pollster John Zogby has joined the parade saying, "Biden was supercilious, gratuitously belittling, and at times disrespectful." Although he declared Biden the winner, Zogby wrote: Biden, for his part, stopped the bleeding from the first presidential debate by being aggressive and by asserting that he was at the President's side when the United States was hit by its worst economic crisis in decades and with two wars. But, frankly, Biden was supercilious, gratuitously belittling, and at times disrespectful.

Vice President Joe Biden said in Thursday night’s vice presidential debate that life begins at conception, that he accepts the Catholic Church’s position on abortion, and that he believes abortion must be legal. The Catholic Church's teaching is not only that abortion is always wrong, but also that Catholics in public office have a grave duty to oppose legalizing it while speaking out clearly against it. The position Biden took on abortion before an audience of many millions in this nationally televised debate was in direct defiance of an ancient moral teaching of the

Morning Joe host Mika Brzezinski disagreed with guest Tom Brokaw on Friday morning when discussing the previous night’s debate between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan. Both Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough agreed that “to know Joe is to love him,” despite poll results pointing to the contrary. Brokaw, however, approached the Vice President’s performance a bit more critically, saying that he simply “can’t contain himself” before pointing to the fact that Biden continued to smirk or laugh while he and Ryan discussed serious, solemn issues like Iran and Libya. “I don’t think he was laughing,” said Brzezinski, but rather showed

Liberals are more pleased with moderator Martha Raddatz than conservatives are disappointed. And it's easy to see why. Raddatz allowed Joe Biden to interrupt Paul Ryan repeatedly during the Vice Presidential debate, and interrupted Ryan herself, while posing questions that were radically in favor of the Obama team. Ryan overcame Raddatz's bias and won the debate regardless, leaving less for conservatives to complain about. Still, it is worth noting the facts. While the candidates' speaking time was roughly equal--not counting crosstalk, Biden spoke for 38:25 and Ryan 37:27--Raddatz’s questions were not in any way a measure of equality.

Washington Post writer Dan Zak penned a "TV Review" of the debates in the A section which bragged "only Vice President Biden acted as though he could sit at the desk in the Oval Office and have his feet touch the ground." In the paper, he began " A pro debated a novice," but on Twitter, Zak previewed he would write "A man debated a boy Thursday night." He also insulted Ryan on Twitter as a pervert/criminal on Law & Order SVU. (See below.) Zak admired the "firm control" and needling "vigor" of ABC's Martha

The Obama campaign is struggling to respond to mounting criticism of Vice President Joe Biden's bizarre behavior during last night's debate with Rep. Paul Ryan. Biden not only interrupted Ryan frequently--82 times, according to Republican National Committee chair Reince Priebus--but frequently laughed, smirked, and snorted at serious moments, showing contempt for his opponent and disturbing even friendly observers. A CNN poll conducted after the debate, which handed Ryan a narrow 48%-44% victory, also showed that Ryan had beaten Biden by an even wider margin when it came to "likeability." Viewers in the poll--with an admittedly small sample--

She said his character and integrity showed during Thursday's 90-minute debate. This administration does not lend itself well to the split screen and the VP might very well need psychiatric care. His smile was frightening. For most of the night Joe Biden looked like the Joker -- Nicholson not Ledger. After 3 ½ years of Biden's playing the fool, it is hard to remember he was once considered a serious man, a serious politician. But...Barack wasn't looking for a serious politician -- he wanted a court jester -- and that's what he got. Now, after playing the fool for so long he has become the fool.

Like most people, I reacted to the news that the EU had won the Nobel Peace Prize with a shout of delighted mirth. In picking this moment--just as the euro brings national antagonisms to a new high--the committee members have revealed a sublime comic genius. It is 40 years since, hearing that the award had gone to Henry Kissinger, Tom Lehrer declared 'satire is now obsolete'. Not even Lehrer at his most fanciful would have imagined the committee passing over Irena Sendler, who had repeatedly risked her life to save children from the Warsaw Ghetto, in favour of Al Gore.

Today is the 10th anniversary of the Bali bombings, which killed 202 people, including 28 Britons and 88 Australians. Many of the victims were young or youngish holidaymakers, drawn to Bali for its famously fun nightlife. The bombs, detonated inside a bar called Paddy’s Pub and directly outside a thumping nightclub called the Sari Club, were clearly an expression of disgust against such nightlife, an attack on those who have the temerity to be hedonistic. Although the bombings tend to get overshadowed in most people’s minds by the earlier and more deadly 9/11, and by Britain’s own

NEW YORK — ABC’s Martha Raddatz took a forceful approach to moderating the vice presidential debate on Thursday, winning many positive reviews from instant pundits on social media but some complaints from Republicans. Her performance was a clear contrast to PBS’ Jim Lehrer’s work in last week’s debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney. Lehrer let the presidential candidates talk almost freely, while Raddatz sought to be more specific and keep things under control. Raddatz, a foreign policy correspondent at ABC News since 1999, was moderating her first vice presidential or presidential debate.

The NFL's involvement in Breast Cancer Awareness month has come under fire after claims the league is profiting from the cause. Players have been wearing pink caps, shirts, elbow pads, and boots and flashes of the colour have adorned towels and parts of the field throughout October across the U.S. Fans can buy pink items from the National Football League shop, or bid in auctions for products seen during games. The proceeds ostensibly go to help support the fight against breast cancer, but critics now allege that most of the cash ends up in the pockets of NFL owners.

Fox News anchor Chris Wallace hammered Vice President Joe Biden's excessive smiling and laughing during the debate, saying that he's never seen anyone be so disrespectful in a presidential or vice presidential debate. And Wallace said that he'd seen most of them — all but the first four in 1960. He called his demeanor "unprecedented." "I don't believe I've ever seen a debate in which one participant was as openly disrespectful of the other as Biden was to Paul Ryan tonight," Wallace said. He added: "It was openly contemptuous and disrespectful."

Ice around the South Pole has expanded to cover a record area, scientists revealed yesterday--a month after saying that the North Pole had lost an unprecedented amount of its ice. Researchers say--rather confusingly--that both occurrences are down to the ‘complex and surprising’ effects of global warming. The record Antarctic sea ice cover was revealed in satellite images from the US National Snow and Ice Data Center in Colorado. At the end of the southern winter in September, ice covered 7.51million square miles of sea--more than at any time since records began in 1979. For the last 30 years the

That was one of the weirdest debates I’ve ever seen. Paul Ryan was a precise, patient policy wonk, and Joe Biden was CRAZY GRANDPA, YOU WANT A PIECE O’ ME, SON?? I could scarcely even pay attention to whatever lies Biden was telling, so distracting was all his laughing and interrupting and flailing about. As Christopher Bedford puts it, he swapped out “hope and change” for “interrupt and laugh.” He was so obnoxious, I became convinced he was trying to goad Ryan into taking a swing at him. He bore a distinct resemblance to this guy:

Once upon a time getting the Nobel Peace Prize was a big deal. But with the award of the 2012 Peace Prize to the European Union, it has become banal. In the race to diminish the prestige of the prize, the committee may have topped its disastrous award of the prize to Barack Obama, for no particular reason. (snip)The Prize has lowered itself to the level of all the award-giving organizations media people organize to give each other prizes at the local, state, regional, and national levels, so they can all be award-winning journalists

The biggest lie Vice President Joe Biden told tonight was a whopper. And somehow it like got past moderator Martha Raddatz, who we were told knows everything about foreign policy. Biden made the patently false and outrageous claim that no one in the Obama administration knew that requests for extra security had been made by our Libyan ambassador, Christopher Stevens, and other members of our consulate in Benghazi. To emphasize his lie, Biden actually said it twice. The claim is absolutely false. So false in fact, that his pals at MSNBC called him out on it:

Well, at least Big Bird wasn't there. It was the only vice presidential debate of the 2012 campaign, fortunately. It pitted Congressman Paul Ryan against ex-Sen. Joe Biden and moderator Martha Raddatz. It was expected to focus on what Raddatz admitted was the top issue of the year -- the economy -- but she took it to safer ground for Biden, the Afghan war. After all, who can rationally oppose ending the nation's longest war, even if it becomes cutting-and-running in a few years?
