Every morning that President Barack Obama chooses to receive the daily intelligence briefing in person, Vice President Joe Biden sits by his side in a matching armchair in the Oval Office. Biden attends -- and often speaks volubly at -- the "principals meetings" of the president and his top national security officials, as well as at the president's weekly meetings with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

Scientists studying the brain‘s reaction to sound have determined the piercing screech of a knife against a glass bottle to be the human ear’s worst nightmare. A research team at the University of Newcastle examined brain activity in a group of volunteers, who listened to 74 recorded sounds under an MRI machine and ranked each experience. The 13 subjects found the sound of a fork against glass to be the second most repulsive, (Snip) The scans revealed that the unpleasant noises not only increase blood flow in the brain’s auditory cortex, where sound is processed, but also trigger the amygdala,

President Obama will today attend what has been billed as his “final finance event” of the 2012 campaign, closing out a record-shattering run both in total number of events and sums raised. With an evening fundraiser at the JW Marriott Marquis in Miami, Fla., Obama will top 222 re-election fundraisers since announcing his bid for a second term in April 2011. He has spent more time fundraising than any incumbent president — more than double the time spent by his predecessor President George W. Bush, who held 86 re-election fundraisers during his first term. (Snip) The gala will feature a

Pop quiz: which vice presidential candidate said this about his budget proposal: “While this program is severe, it is the only proposal that will halt the upward spiral of deficits.” And this: ”Within the next 12 to 18 months this country will face an economic and political crisis of extraordinary proportions if Congress refuses to take decisive action on the deficits that we face.” Here’s a hint: This candidate proposed cutting spending across-the-board, including reduced spending on Social Security and he even said the debt ceiling should not be increased without spending cuts. Who is this vice presidential candidate? Vice

President Obama’s job approval rating spiked this month, according to Gallup’s daily tracking survey, but the jump may be the result of a shift in the polling outlet’s survey methodology. Since late 2011, President Obama has held steady at just under 50 percent saying they approved of the job he was doing and just under 50 percent saying they disapproved. Earlier this month, the trend line moved in favor of the president, and on Thursday it sat at 53 percent positive and 42 negative — a greater job approval rating than Obama enjoyed after the assassination of Osama bin Laden.

DANVILLE, Kentucky- Democrats are betting on U.S. Vice President Joe Biden to deliver a feisty performance Thursday evening during a high-stakes debate against Republican challenger Paul Ryan and seize back momentum in the race for the White House. Republican Mitt Romney's steady climb in polls since President Barack Obama's poor showing in their first debate last week have intensified expectations for the vice presidential showdown with less than four weeks before the November 6 election. The former Massachusetts governor has taken the lead in national surveys and narrowed the gap by which he trails Obama in many of the swing states

Istanbul - Moscow accused Ankara of endangering Russian lives on Thursday after Turkey forced a Syrian passenger plane to land and seized what it suspected was military equipment being ferried from Russia to Syrian President Bashar Assad. Damascus said the interception of the Syrian Air plane was an act of piracy, further heightening tensions between the neighbors after Turkey's chief of staff warned his troops would respond with greater force if shells from Syria continued to hit Turkish territory. (Snip) A source in a Russian arms exporting agency told Interfax the jet was carrying no Russian weapons or military equipment.

ATHENS, Greece -- Unemployment in Greece hit a record high of 25.1 percent in July as the country's financial crisis continues to exact its heavy toll, official figures showed Thursday. All indications are that unemployment in Greece will continue to rise. The economy has shrunk by around a fifth since the recession started in 2008 and youth unemployment has pushed way above 50 percent. The economy is expected to enter a sixth year of recession next year. "This is a very dramatic result of the recession," said Angelos Tsakanikas, head of research at Greece's IOBE economic research foundation.

Actress Stacey Dash was attacked viciously on Twitter after she expressed support for Mitt Romney, with several people telling her "Kill yourself," another calling her a "hag," and yet others hurling racial slurs. But even this pales in comparison to the level of class exhibited by an Obama supporter who harassed a 12-year-old boy and told him that he should have been aborted. The blog Freedom Eden reports: "The Leftist, a 78-year-old woman, a New Berlin school bus driver, has been harassing a student on her bus route because there's a Mitt Romney yard sign

The Romney campaign will not be issuing a formal statement, according to spokeswoman Kate Meriwether, who declined to provide details. Pawlucy's father, Richard, declined to comment this morning and the family attorney, Wally Zimolong, could not be reached. WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is providing protection for whistle-blowers in the national security arena so that they can report waste, fraud and abuse without fear of retaliation. The president has signed a policy directive providing the protection because legislation in Congress has not done so. A rewrite of the whistle-blower protection law is in the Senate. House Republicans removed the proposed protection for those involved in national security. Under the president's new policy, whistle-blowers who handle classified information — meaning almost everyone in the intelligence community —

Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s 2013 city budget is the calm before the storm that could make everyone forget the worst blizzards in memory. So feel free to savor the calm just a moment before stepping forth into the cold winds of reality. For the second straight year, Emanuel has submitted a reasonable, responsible budget that faces up to the city’s financial problems. Even better, this year’s budget proposal contains no new tax increases or fees of any sort, although it profits considerably from the ones he pushed through last year.
