The lesson of the Jurassic Park tragedy was clear — man and dinosaur were not meant to coexist. It’s lucky then that dinosaur fossils are far too old to contain any genetic material that could be used for cloning. DNA breaks down over time, even when kept in ideal conditions, and a study of extinct moa bones has revealed an estimate of the half-life for our genes. (Snip) Averaging out the results from the different bones gave the average half-life of 521 years. That result is caveated, of course, as there are many factors that can also affect the rate

Cable news race commentator Michael Eric Dyson went on an extraordinary rant on MSNBC's "Now with Alex Wagner" about the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court case relating to affirmative action. Dyson was responding to criticism that President Obama's road was paved for him and how whites view affirmative action. "What is the complaint here? The complaint is when we mess up and we acknowledged that we've messed up, we have to pay the price for it. America tells us as black people, 'Pull yourself up by your bootstraps.' Then acknowledge what you did.

Organized labor is playing “Moneyball” this fall, and President Barack Obama isn’t winning. Four years ago, organized labor came out early and often for Obama, from major endorsements in the primary to multimillion-dollar ad buys later in the year. Now, with smaller memberships, less excitement and a languishing economy, unions aren’t guaranteed to be the help they once were. It doesn’t help that Obama’s at times disappointed labor on issues ranging from trade to environmental regulations to the Wisconsin gubernatorial recall vote. Despite the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision opening the door to direct and unlimited union

Spain’s debt rating was cut to one level above junk by Standard & Poor’s, which cited mounting economic and political risks. The country was lowered two levels to BBB- from BBB+, New York-based S&P said today in a statement. S&P assigned a negative outlook on the nation’s debt. The downgrade comes after Spain announced a fifth austerity package in less than a year and published details of stress tests of its banks. Creditworthiness concerns have grown since the government requested as much as 100 billion euros ($129 billion)

Facing a tough challenge from the staunchly conservative Todd Akin, Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill today released three new ads that go for the jugular: The ads feature three female survivors of sexual assault speaking directly into the camera against Akin's remarks on rape and abortion. "I'm a Republican and a pro-life mother, and a rape survivor," says a woman identified as Diana in one ad. "In the hospital I was offered emergency contraception. Because of my personal beliefs, I declined. Here's what else I believe: no woman should be denied that choice. What Todd Akin said is offensive, but what

New York - Shipments of personal computers are on pace to fall this year for the first time since the dot-com bust of 2001, according to a new forecast from IHS iSuppli. That would be a stunning turn of events for a industry that at the beginning of the year seemed poised for a surge. Intel hyped its new Ultrabook laptop design as the catalyst the moribund PC market needed and predicted that ultrabooks would represent 40% of all laptop sales by the end of the year. MIcrosoft's upcoming Windows 8 fueled hope among industry players that PC tablets would

President Barack Obama famously blamed the bad economy on a struggling public sector, but a new Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report shows that the issuance of pink slips has slowed among government workers while jumping across much of private industry. In August, nearly 1.8 million private sector employees were laid off—up nearly 300,000 from July and nearly 100,000 from August 2011. Those layoffs came just two months after Obama proclaimed that “the private sector is doing fine” and attributed struggling job creation to government layoffs.

When Vice President Joe Biden faces off against Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan, viewers might expect to see something like a reprise of silver-haired Sen. Lloyd Bentsen meeting (and by most accounts, conquering) GOP veep candidate Sen. Dan Quayle, 25 years his junior, in their 1988 debate. Or they might expect another older vs. younger confrontation like the 2004 debate when a somber, intimidating Vice President Dick Cheney bested Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. John Edwards, 12 years his junior. (Snip) While often regarded as more of a voluble campaigner and backslapper than a scholar, when given a brief

Ann Romney's favourite designer, who has successfully flown under the American fashion radar, has revealed the secrets behind her conservative wardrobe choices. According to Alfred Fiandaca, Mrs Romney chooses her outfits with Mitt in mind, is 'edgier' than people realise, and almost always buys her clothes directly off the rack. In one of his first ever interviews, Boston-based designer told WWD: 'She’s always thinking about what Mitt would like her to look like. She definitely dresses for him. Mitt likes her to wear red and pink, to have a defined waist and

For many years, climate realists have pointed to expanding ice in Antarctica as a counter to the claim that decreasing ice in the Arctic is necessarily proof of anthropogenic global warming. The folks at the Associated Press on Wednesday came up with an unbelievable answer to that in an article unbelievably titled "Experts: Global Warming Means More Antarctic ice": (Snip) Shifts in wind patterns and the giant ozone hole over the Antarctic this time of year — both related to human activity — are probably behind the increase in ice, experts say. Washington - President Obama says the “fundamentals” of the 2012 presidential race remain unchanged following a weak debate performance in Denver that rattled his supporters and gave fresh momentum to Republican challenger Mitt Romney. “Governor Romney had a good night. I had a bad night. It’s not the first time I’ve had a bad night,” Obama said in an exclusive conversation with ABC News’ Diane Sawyer, his first televised interview since the debate. Asked by Sawyer whether it was possible his performance had handed the election to Romney, Obama said, “No.”

In a heated and dramatic congressional hearing today, witnesses who served with the U.S. diplomatic corps in Libya and pushed for a stronger security presence repeatedly faulted the State Department for standing in their way – one even referring to the State Department officials he described as obstructionist as if they were Taliban terrorists. The former regional security officer in Libya, Eric Nordstrom, recalled talking to a regional director and asking for twelve security agents. “His response to that was, ‘You are asking for the sun, moon and the stars.’ And my response to him – his name was Jim

Right after the extremely entertaining show of Obama’s helpless debate performance, the government Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) published false employment data for September, clearly designed to throw a rope to our sinking President. According to that report, the total payroll employment in the nation has risen by anemic 114,000, but miraculously this employment disaster has resulted in a significant drop in the percentage of jobless people – from 8.1% to 7.8%. (I think that after such a skillful mathematical equilibristic, the BLS abbreviation should be deciphered as Bull…t Labor Statistics.)

The Obama administration’s Benghazi response continued to unravel at the House Oversight Committee hearing today, as State Department officials struggled unsuccessfully to get their stories straight. Ambassador Patrick Kennedy defended UN Ambassador Susan Rice’s claim on September 16 that the attack was part of a spontaneous protest that erupted over an anti-Islam video, saying that anyone at the State Department would have said the same thing as Rice based on the intelligence available at the time. “If any administration official, including any career official, were on television on Sunday, September 16, they would have said what Ambassador Rice said.

I'd like to share a story on Senator Joe Biden that happened 31 years ago, and may be relevant to Biden's Thursday evening debate with Paul Ryan. It involved Biden's international humiliation of a good man, and it became a habit for Biden. I'm confident Biden may aim to repeat the performance with Paul Ryan in the vice-presidential debate, looking to "Quayle" the youthful Wisconsin congressman in a way worse than Lloyd Bentsen might have done. The "good man" I'm referring to is William P. "Bill" Clark, also known as Judge Clark. Clark, now 80 years old,

Administration officials are now blaming the nation’s intelligence agencies for the administration’s week-long campaign to blame a little-known YouTube video for the lethal Sept. 11 Benghazi attack. Officials’ statements about the video’s contribution to the attack were based on judgments ”made by the intelligence community,” Jay Carney, President Barack Obama’s press secretary, said Oct. 10. “We provided the information we had [from the agencies], and we made clear it was preliminary,” Carney insisted. Carney repeatedly declined to explain the White House’s response to the attack, or its security measures taken prior to the attack,

The next time Samantha Pawlucy returns to school, her father said, it won't be Charles Carroll High. Pawlucy is at the center of controversy for accusing her math teacher of publicly humiliating her for wearing a Romney/Ryan t-shirt to school Sept. 28. Her father, Richard, said her return to school Tuesday was so uncomfortable that the three high-school children in his home will not return to Carroll. Instead, he said by phone this morning, the family will transfer their children, possibly to a charter school. State representative John Taylor's office is helping with the transfer, Richard Pawlucy said.

During the next presidential debate, the candidates will be pondering the important questions of our time. But the most controversial may be "Sausage or pepperoni?" Pizza Hut is offering a lifetime of free pizza -- one large pie a week for 30 years -- or a check for $15,600 to anyone who poses the question to either President Barack Obama or Republican candidate Mitt Romney during the live Town Hall-style debate next Tuesday. The proposed stunt, which the pizza chain announced Tuesday, threatens to tick off millions of viewers who are expected to tune in to the debate

New York — The owner of Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants is putting more workers on part-time status in a test aimed at limiting health care costs. Darden Restaurants Inc. declined to give details but said the test is only in restaurants in four markets across the country. It entails boosting the number of workers on part-time status, meaning they work less than 30 hours a week. Under the new Affordable Care Act, companies with 50 or more workers could be hit with fines if they do not provide basic coverage for full-time workers and their dependents.

A bunch of people are speaking out against Obama -- his economics, his plan, his presidency the large -- and they're holding nothing back. Jack Welch came out and basically accused somebody of doing something with the unemployment numbers. And everybody then jumped in Jack Welch chili. "Jack, what are you doing? Don't go there, man! Oslo - With a slew of conflicts tormenting the planet, observers say the field of possible winners for this year's Nobel Peace Prize is wide open, though some suggest it could go to Eastern European activism or the Arab Spring. Will a theorist of non-violent protests whose ideas inspired the Arab Spring uprisings be honoured, or perhaps a Russian or a Belarusian human rights activist? The speculation ahead of Friday's prize announcement is rife, but so far no one stands out as a clear favourite. "The Arab Spring, or maybe rather the Arab Autumn, is still dominating the news," Jan

Sydney - A blistering attack by Prime Minister Julia Gillard labelling Australia's opposition leader a misogynist has gained global attention but sparked a divisive reaction about her judgement and the role of sexism in politics. Gillard, the nation's first woman leader, lashed out on Tuesday at Tony Abbott after he called for the removal of parliamentary speaker Peter Slipper over lurid text messages, which referenced female genitalia. Slipper, who stood aside in April amid claims of gay sex harassment, survived an opposition motion to dump him with the support of Gillard and her ruling Labour party, but later resigned.
